Andariel Farming: Quest Bug & MF Setup
Andariel is one of the best early-ladder ring and amulet farmers in Diablo 2 Resurrected. The quest-bug drop bonus makes her treasure table richer, and her low damage lets almost any character tank her safely.
Andariel Farming Guide
Andariel is the first boss most players hunt after hammering out their starter gear. She sits in the Catacombs, drops rings and amulets like few bosses can, and the quest-bug mechanic makes her drop table dramatically richer. Understanding how to set up, run and optimize Andy runs will define your first week on the ladder.
Why Andy Is a Top Ring and Amulet Target
Andariel has a treasure-class bias toward equipment. More importantly, she has a special drop bias toward rings and amulets. Stone of Jordan, Bul-Kathos' Wedding Band, Nagel, Rare rings with +skills and resistances, and Charms all roll from her table at higher rates than other bosses. In the first week, a dozen Andy runs can net you the SoJs to swap for your first Enigma or the rings to diversify your caster''s slot.
On top of that, the quest-bug drop bonus applies to her. When you complete the "Andariel Quest" (rescue Deckard Cain in the Catacombs) without picking up the quest loot (or with everyone in the party doing the same), all subsequent Andariel drops that session get a multiplicative bonus to rarity — roughly 3–5x more likely to be magic, rare, set or unique. A few SoJs in the first run trigger Diablo Clone; a stone you didn''t expect becomes your currency for leverage.
Setting Up the Quest Bug
The mechanics are simple but strict:
- Do not click Cain until the party is ready to leave Act 1. This completes the quest. Once the quest is complete, the bonus stops applying.
- Kill Andariel before completing the quest. She will drop as usual, but her drops get the rarity bonus because the quest is not yet flagged complete.
- Farm her until you run out of time or decide to reset. Every Andy kill in that session keeps the bonus active.
- Reset the game and re-do the quest on the next session if you want the bonus again. Alternatively, rush a new character and keep her at quest-incomplete status to have a permanent Andy-farming character.
The bonus persists per character until the quest is complete. Solo players can maintain a Catacomb-locked character indefinitely; groups need to rotate who completes the quest or accept the bonus dropping after the first completion.
The Catacombs Route and Run Times
The Catacombs are three levels deep. Andariel spawns on level 4 as a Super Unique pack boss, nearly always in her own chamber. The route is almost trivial:
- Enter the Catacombs (Act 1, Cold Plains waypoint, head east).
- Run down to level 2 without engaging packs; the path is usually open.
- Level 3 to 4: similar speeds. Andariel''s chamber is almost always at a corner or dead end.
- Kill her and her minions (she spawns with mummies and archers; clear them too).
- Grab the drops and reset.
A practiced sorceress or zealot clears this in under 60 seconds. Slower builds take 2–3 minutes. Most effective players do this in a game with two or three other people, so the lobby splits Andy runs and Countess runs or mixes in Andariel runs on the way to Mephisto.
Gear and Poison Resistance
Andy deals poison damage through her minions and her own attacks. Capped poison resistance (75%) is highly recommended. Characters who run Andy at zero res take chip damage from her minions and occasionally get surprised.
Poison resistance comes from:
- Lore helm on your merc, Ali Baba (MF weapon), or from rings and amulets
- Antidote potions in your belt (stackable, unlimited)
- Treachery runeword provides 45 poison resistance
- Durability (lower durability = lower chip damage over time)
For your first Andy run, just drink antidotes liberally and focus on not dying to her minions. She herself deals relatively low damage; her pack is the threat.
What to Expect Per 100 Runs
In 100 Andy runs with the quest bonus active (on normal difficulty):
- 5–8 Unique rings or amulets, mostly in the Nagel, Manald Heal, or Stone of Jordan range
- 12–20 Rare rings and amulets, many with +skills to caster classes or useful resist rolls
- 15–30 Magic rings and amulets
- 100s of charms, small and grand, some with life or resistances
- Expect 1–2 SoJs per 100 runs early ladder (before the economy floods with them)
After the first week, SoJ density drops as the economy gets older, but rare rings with +1 Lightning or +1 Poison Necro skills keep their value all season. Andy farming is boring, repetitive, and one of the most consistent wealth builders in the first 48 hours of ladder. Do it while the rewards are fat, then graduate to Mephisto or Diablo Clone when Andy feels slow.
