Assassin Class Overview: Traps to Mosaic
The Assassin is Diablo 2 Resurrected's technical class. Traps automate clear, Mosaic runeword launched melee into the stratosphere, and Shadow Disciplines unlock utility no other class can touch.
Assassin Class Overview
The Assassin is the most technical and versatile class in Diablo 2 Resurrected. She wields three distinct skill trees — Lightning Sentry and Death Sentry traps, Martial Arts melee damage, and Shadow Disciplines utility — and the Mosaic patch in 2023 elevated her from niche to top-tier farming.
The Three Skill Trees: Tools for Every Situation
Traps (Lightning and Death Sentry trees) summon automated turrets that fire projectiles, stun enemies, and scale with caster gear. Lightning Sentry pierces and chains; Death Sentry explodes corpses and summons skeleton warriors. The trap meta is entirely hands-off farming: place charges, tank, and watch mobs die. Trapsins carry gear, they don''t scale with attack speed, and they work in every difficulty.
Martial Arts (Martial Arts tree) powers kicks and weapon strikes with Weapon Block and stance bonuses. Before Mosaic, this tree was a curiosity; after the patch, Mosaic runeword (Mal Gul Amn) made claws viable endgame weapons that rival Grief for pure DPS. Martial Arts Assassins (MAs) now compete with top-tier melee builds in clear speed.
Shadow Disciplines (Shadow Disciplines tree) supplies utility: Fade grants resistances and defense; Burst of Speed copies Boots of Speed; Mind Blast stuns; and Weapon Block is a passive dodge layer that stacks with gear. This tree does not deal damage but transforms survival and control into endgame viability.
Signature Builds
Trapsin is the gateway Assassin. Pit her Lightning Sentry and she clears 80% of Hell without you clicking attack once. Death Sentry adds corpse explosions for extra pack speed. She is mana-hungry but Insight on the merc solves that. Gearing is light (any spellcaster base works; Enigma for endgame) and she outputs absurd DPS for the investment. Chaos farming with a Trapsin is mindless wealth printing.
Mosaic Martial Arts is the new hotness post-patch. A dual-claw Mosaic user with high IAS (Fury Druid gear can carry her to breakpoints easily) outputs damage on par with a Grief Barbarian but in a claw-fast attack animation. Charge reduction and lifesteal turn her into an unkillable solo farmer. This is the build that made Assassin relevant at endgame.
Hybrid / Kicksin tries to blend Martial Arts kick damage with trap utility or Shadow Disciplines dodge. These are viable but clunky; pure trap or pure MA outperforms hybrids almost always. Kicksin appeals to players who want a unique playstyle at the cost of efficiency.
PvP Assassin (especially WW Whirlwind Assassin claws in Chaos) uses Mosaic and Fade for near-immortality and damage output. Burst of Speed movement and two claw swaps make her one of the most mobile fighters in PvP. High-end PvP Asin builds are expensive and demanding but competitive.
Strengths and Weaknesses
Assassins excel at hands-off clear with traps. No other class can place charges and walk away while mobs explode. Traps also ignore many immunities because they are a damage type all their own (lightning sentry pierces fire/cold immunes; death sentry explodes everything). She is unkillable in open farming because she never needs to be in melee range.
She also dominates endgame melee with Mosaic. Claw-attack speed with Fury Druid breakpoints, lifesteal via weapon mods, and Fade for survival turn her into a one-build juggernaut. Compared to Barbarians, she outputs similar damage but with more defensive utility and faster movement.
However, Assassins require very specific gear to peak. Trap builds need caster bases; MA builds need precise IAS breakpoints and Mosaic runes. Leveling a trapsin or MA without endgame gear is slower than leveling a Sorceress or Paladin. She also has zero rune-finding mechanics (unlike Barbarian whirlwind or Druid tornados) so solo farming runes is inefficient.
Trapsins are also weak against super-fast packs where your trap placement is slower than their movement. And without Fade active, she is fragile compared to Zealot Paladins or Whirlwind Barbarians.
Gearing Arc: Leveling to Endgame
Fresh 18+: Stealth armor, Lore helm, spirit wand/dagger, Burst of Speed for IAS. Traps already work; lay them and kite.
Early ladder (Act 2 Hell): Smoke or Treachery armor, Wealth or Ali Baba MF swap, Leaf or Spirit swap for trap damage. Mind Blast to stun tough packs. Trap placement becomes muscle memory.
Mid-ladder (Chaos farming trapsin): Duress or Stealth body, Flickering Flame helm, Enigma if available, Infinity merc for -res. Traps deal absurd damage; kill speeds rival top-tier farmers.
Endgame MA (post-Mosaic): Dual Mosaic claws (or Dual Grief if you prefer), IAS to hit the 30 FPA breakpoint via gear, Duress or CoH for CTC Fade, Treachery merc, capped resists. This setup rivals endgame Zealot or Whirlwind in DPS and surpasses it in survivability.
Which Assassin Build Fits You
Pick Trapsin if you enjoy passive farming and do not want to think about positioning. Set charges and zone out; mobs die without your attention.
Pick Mosaic Martial Arts if you love melee but want something outside the Barbarian/Paladin meta. Claws are fast, the playstyle is aggressive, and the damage ceiling is shocking.
Pick Fade-heavy hybrid if survival matters more than speed. You will clear slowly but almost never die, and the Fade proc makes her satisfying to play.
The Assassin''s diversity means you can respec multiple times per ladder and try totally different playstyles. Pick the tree that matches your mood and re-gear when you feel like a change.
