Best Runeword Bases: Superior & Eth That Sell
Base item choice makes or breaks runewords. This guide ranks the tiers, explains superior and ethereal affixes, and tells you which bases to farm early ladder.
Best Runeword Bases: The Complete Hierarchy
Base item choice is the hidden layer of runeword power that separates veterans from ladder chaos. The runes matter, yes, but a Grief in a non-eth Thresher loses hundreds of damage compared to Grief in an eth Thresher. A Spirit in a non-ethereal Monarch offers inferior stats to a superior-rolled version. This guide walks the base hierarchy, explains when superior and ethereal affixes matter, and shows you which bases to hunt first.
Why base choice matters
Three properties decide a base's value: strength (its inherent damage or defense), speed (attack or cast speed), and tier (rarity and farming difficulty). A Phase Blade has zero base damage but swings faster than a Colossus Voulge, making it ideal for Grief where attack speed caps out faster. A Colossus Voulge hits harder per swing but needs more attack speed to break even, making it the better Insight choice on a mercenary who mostly stands still. A Monarch shield has the best base defense and the lowest rune requirements, making it the runeword container for Spirit when you build your first character. Understanding these trade-offs means your gear stops being random and starts being intentional.
Weapon runewords by tier
Top tier (the big hitters): Phase Blades for Grief, Great Polearms for Infinity, Colossus Voulges for Insight. Phase Blades dominate Grief because the weapon's zero base damage means damage entirely scales from runeword mods, and their faster swing means Grief breakpoints tighten meaningfully. Great Polearms for Infinity offer the highest damage ceiling on a mercenary. Colossus Voulges for Insight give the steadiest mana regeneration on your Act 2 merc because they attack slower and mana regen procs less frequently, but when they do, the stack is deepest.
Mid tier: Threshers and Cryptic Axes for Pride and Holy Fire weapons. Threshers are ethereal hunting grounds because that form costs zero gold to repair if you socket it with a Zod rune or roll self-repair mods. Cryptic Axes offer solid balanced stats for hybrid builds wanting Plague or Death.
Budget tier: Bill staves and curved swords for early Spirit, Leaf, and leveling words. A Bill is a 4-socket polearm that spawns on Hell Andariel and costs next to nothing. It carries Insight until you find a base worthy of the runes. Curved swords like Tulwars are dirt cheap 4-socket weapons perfect for Spirit clones when farming groups need multiple copies.
Shield runewords and monarchs
Monarchs are non-negotiable for Spirit shields. A Monarch has the lowest rune cost to achieve a 4-socket setup (Larzuk guesses low on it early ladder) and the highest defense, making it the only correct base for endgame casters. Bone visages and sacred targes are ethereal hunting grounds for melee shields (Exile, Defiance). Find a superior ethereal Sacred Targe and you have a Smiter's holy grail.
Superior affixes and why they matter
Superior items roll with an inherent "+% Enhanced Damage" or "+% Enhanced Defense" bonus. A 15% superior Eth Thresher adds flat physical damage on top of the runeword's Grief bonus. A 15% superior Non-Eth Monarch adds 15% defense to an already-tanky Shield. Superior affixes are invisible multipliers: they are not flashy until you compare side-by-side. A non-eth Thresher Grief hits for 1300 damage; a 15% eth Thresher Grief hits for 1890, a gap of 600 damage your Barb notices every fight.
The catch is rarity. A superior ethereal Thresher is rarer than some uniques. If you need a Spirit immediately and you find a non-eth Monarch with no superior roll, use it. But never pass a superior roll when farming the bases themselves.
Ethereal bases: when required, when wasted
Ethereal is mandatory on melee weapons (because the 25% damage bonus and zero repair cost via Zod create the only endgame Barb damage) and optional everywhere else. Ethereal armor sometimes helps (Eth Fortitude on a merc is worth more defense than non-eth), but the durability penalty matters more often than you want.
Ethereal helms are mostly wasted unless they roll 3-sockets naturally. Eth Shako loses durability for zero gain. Eth Lore offers extra defense but you are level 20 and the helmet lasts one playthrough anyway.
Farming and early-ladder bases
Week one, farm bases alongside runes. Andy and Countess drop bases; Hell Andariel hands out Bills and Spires. By day two, any orb or Membrane or Grim Helm you find is a potential Lore or Smoke base. Do not buy bases early ladder — drop rates are high and prices are inflation bait.
Mid-ladder, bases matter more. Smiters need an ethereal Sacred Targe (farm Andariel and Countess relentlessly or watch the market). Barbs need superior ethereals (LK runs or trade). Casters can buy or find non-eth Monarchs cheaply.
Use socket mechanics and Larzuk to guarantee 4-socket drops or upgrade via horadric cube if your luck runs dry. Cross-reference with runeword mechanics if you are unsure whether a base type accepts a given word.
A perfect base does not exist on day one. A serviceable base that lets you build your runeword and farm efficiently beats waiting months for the dream roll. Move on it, farm, upgrade later.
