Chains of Honor Runeword: Stats, Best Bases & Builds
Chains of Honor transforms body armor into a all-resist platform that every build can use. Here is what Chains brings, who wears it, and when to stop hunting for it.
Chains of Honor (Dol Um Ber Ist) is one of the few runewords that competes with unique armor in almost any slot. Unlike runewords that demand specific class investments, Chains works on any character that needs a resistance boost and can sacrifice damage output. It is the go-to armor for summoner characters and magic-find builds where raw defense matters more than offense.
Runes and Base Requirements
Chains of Honor requires four runes in exact order: Dol + Um + Ber + Ist. This combination brings together low, mid, and high runes, making it moderately expensive to assemble for new ladder characters. Dol is farmable (Countess or LK), Um is common (Nightmare Countess or easy mid-rune drops), but Ber and Ist push the total cost into the 3-4 Ber equivalent range depending on ladder timing.
The base must be gray body armor: leather armor, studded leather, hard leather, ring mail, scale mail, breast plate, chain mail, splint mail, plate mail, or gothic plate. Ethereal bases gain 50% defense, making an eth Gothic Plate superior base with Chains genuinely tanky. Superior bases roll with +10-15% enhanced defense, and combined with Chains'' base defense roll, a superior eth Gothic Plate can reach 400+ base defense before socketing.
Full Stats and Rolls
Chains of Honor provides the following effects on any base:
| Stat | Value |
|---|
| +1-3 All Skills | scales per base defense (~mid gear gets +2) |
| All Resistances +20% | flat 20 to fire, cold, lightning, poison |
| Damage Reduced by 15% | permanent 15% physical reduction |
| 0.3% Chance to Cast Level 15 Vengeance on Striking | niche proc, mostly irrelevant |
| -25% Mana Cost | applies to any skill your character casts |
| Level 21 Iron Maiden (27 Charges) | charges per strike or spell, rarely used |
The +skills bump feels minor at +1-3, but paired with lower-investment classes like Summoners, Chains becomes essential. Summon Necromancers jump from soul rend to actual skeleton armies with a +2 to 3 upgrade from Chains, and the 20% all resist is non-negotiable in Hell where monsters hit hard from every angle.
Who Wears Chains of Honor
Summon Necromancers love Chains because they trade spell damage for minion scaling. The +skills go directly into Skeleton Mastery, Raise Skeleton, and synergies, turning a mediocre Summon build into a dominant farming character. The Iron Maiden charges are a bonus that occasionally procs interesting interactions.
Magic-Find builds use Chains when maximizing defense matters more than DPS. A Mephisto runner in Tal Rasha''s set with Chains or Fortitude over Enigma plays safer and slower but survives random spikes from boss packs.
Hydra Sorceresses in PvP sometimes wear Chains for the survivability and all-resist stack against targeted damage.
Builds with inherent resistances like Druid and Paladin stack Chains for the final resist cap push without sacrificing too much offense.
Best Bases for Chains
| Base | Ilvl | ED Potential | Notes |
|---|
| Archon Plate | 79 | up to 55% | huge defense if superior, best endgame base |
| Gothic Plate | 79 | up to 55% | alternative elite, slightly less common |
| Mage Plate | 29 | up to 40% | viable for leveling, found earlier |
| Ornate Plate | 27 | up to 40% | another midtier option |
Superior Archon Plate with 3 sockets and Chains hits 350+ defense before socketing. Ethereal superior Archon Plate with Chains exceeds 500 defense with proper enhancement rolls, making it a genuine defensive wall. The downside is durability—ethereal armor requires constant repairs if you use it actively, and Chains of Honor armor becomes unequipped the moment it breaks.
Budget Alternatives and Upgrade Paths
Fortitude (El Sol Dol Lo) sits just below Chains in cost but offers more raw defense and elemental damage to melee. If you already have Fortitude on a mercenary, Chains on your character feels redundant until endgame.
Skin of the Vipermagi unique tunic gives all-resist without a runeword slot, though it caps at +1 skills and lacks Chains'' bulk.
Lionheart (Lev Mal Tir) offers more all skills (+3) on a lighter base, but costs similar runes and lacks the raw defense stack.
For ladder-day progression: if you need an armor runeword, skip Chains and go Stealth → Smoke → Spirit. Chains makes sense as a mid-ladder splurge or endgame swap on summoners pushing higher XP zones.
Trade Value and Assembly Cost
Rune costs drift across the ladder season:
- Early ladder (week 1-2): each Ber costs 2-3 Mal, so Chains sits around 5-6 Mal equivalent.
- Mid-ladder: Chains stabilizes at 4-5 Ber equivalent.
- Late ladder: prices compress; Chains drops to 3-4 Ber.
Finished Chains on a superior eth base adds 1-2 Ber to the base value. A perfect eth Archon Plate with Chains can be a genuine keeper item or trade piece worth 7-10 Ber depending on the market.
Why Chains Works
Chains of Honor succeeds because it solves multiple problems at once. The all-resist stack lets you skip expensive resist gear elsewhere, the +skills scale minion armies and caster spells, the mana cost reduction eases mana problems, and the damage reduction is always valuable. For Summoners especially, Chains is nearly mandatory for Hell viability.
The tradeoff is rune cost and the opportunity cost of Enigma, Fortitude, or Grief in the same armor slot. But on characters where +skills matter more than offense, Chains becomes the obvious choice.
