Countess Rune Farming: The Fastest Early Runes in D2R
The Countess is the most reliable rune source in the early game. This route walks you through the Forgotten Tower, her drop tables by difficulty, and the habits that make each run take under two minutes.
The Countess is the first boss every rune-hungry ladder player memorizes. She lives at the bottom of the Forgotten Tower in the Black Marsh, she has a special drop table that forces rune drops, and a practiced run takes well under two minutes.
Step 1: Get the route down
Take the Black Marsh waypoint and hug the marsh looking for the ruined tower entrance — it is a distinct round structure and often near the edges of the map. Inside, the Forgotten Tower has five cellar levels. The stairs down are frequently near your entry point, so circle the outer wall rather than clearing rooms. Everything on levels one through four is skippable; the Countess waits on level five in a chamber at the far end.
Step 2: Kill her efficiently
The Countess is fire and cold immune-free in Normal and only lightly protected later, so almost any damage type works. She spawns with a pack of ghosts and archers; pull her away from the pack if your character is fragile. Kill the minions too — her guaranteed rune drop comes from her own drop table, but the pack can drop runes and charms of its own.
Step 3: Know what she can drop
Her rune ceiling rises with difficulty:
- Normal: up to Ral — everything you need for Stealth, Lore and an early Insight.
- Nightmare: up to Ko — Spirit and Lore staples on tap, with a real shot at Lem-range runes over a session.
- Hell: up to Lo from the rune-specific drop, though the odds at the very top are thin. Hell Countess is best treated as a steady stream of mid runes — Lum, Ko, Fal, Lem — plus keys of terror for Uber Tristram.
Step 4: Make it a habit
Countess runs shine because of consistency, not jackpots. Thirty Hell runs will almost always produce the runes for an Insight and a Spirit or two, which is more than most bosses can promise. Reset the game, take the waypoint, dive, kill, repeat. Add a little magic find for the charm and jewelry drops from her pack, but do not gear specifically for MF here — runes ignore magic find entirely, so speed beats everything.
Once the route is muscle memory, you can interleave Countess with Andariel or Mephisto games: runes from the Tower, gear from the bosses, and your first runewords built before most of the lobby finishes questing. Few habits in the game pay off faster than a clean Tower route.
