Ladder Day 1: Hour-by-Hour Game Plan
Ladder day 1 is a sprint. Here is the hour-by-hour game plan that gets you to NM farming while the economy is softest: Act 1 rushing splits, Normal clear pace, leveling benchmarks, and trade setup timing.
Hours 0–2: Act 1 and Tristram
The first two hours are the tightest. You have three goals: reach level 15, acquire a 2-socket armor for Stealth, and amass ~20 normal runes for mid-game runewords. Multiple parties solve this by running dedicated roles—a rusher who pushes content fast, a BO barb to buff, and glass cannon damage dealers who kill fast and level aggressively.
Minute 0–15: Solo up to level 3–4 in Tristram if playing independent, or meet your party and jump into Andy runs. Tristram is faster than cows if you can handle the undead. Kill Andy, grab the rune drop table, and reset. If in a party, let the designated killer get the last hit so the party experiences the kill credit. This maximizes drops for everyone.
Minute 15–60: Run Andy on repeat. By Andy run 3–4, you are level 8–10. Grab your 2-socket armor from a drop or vendor (any Normal body piece). A 2-socket mail or splint mail with low base defense works perfectly. Stealth (Tal + Eth) is the game-changer here—25% faster run/walk cuts your clear time by nearly a third. Assemble it the moment you have both runes.
Minute 60–120: Push into Act 2. Your rusher should be carrying you through Radament and the tomb. Grab a polearm base for Insight (any 4-socket normal polearm from a vendor). By hour 2, you are level 12–15 and sitting on Tal, Eth, Ral, Tir runes or close. If you have Stealth already assembled, you are now roughly 2x faster than your starving competitors—this speed advantage compounds exponentially as you scale through Normal.
Hours 2–6: Rush Pace Through Normal
Once you have your Stealth base and Insight base, leveling accelerates. A party rusher will skip bosses; you follow and catch the XP drops and boss packs. Solo players need to decide: skip to Baal runs fast, or pick off bosses for guaranteed drops and additional XP.
Team play: Rusher clears to Andariel, team kills, next reset. Repeat for Duriel, Mephisto, Diablo. Total time: ~4–5 hours to Diablo Clone. Solo is slower by ~50%, so assume 6–7 hours to reach Diablo walk.
Milestones:
- Hour 2.5: Level 15, Stealth assembled, Insight assembled.
- Hour 4: Level 22–24, Normal Nightmare cleared, ready for Baal runs.
- Hour 6: Level 28–30, Normal Baal farm ready.
Normal Baal and the Level 40s
By hour 5–6, push into Nightmare. Your Stealth already grants 25% faster run/walk—that is 60% of your leveling speed right there. Grab a second merc (Act 2 is preferred for Might aura helping your damage), and run NM Baal on repeat starting around level 22. The XP is brutal early on, but by level 28–30, runs are fast and XP is meaningful again.
Level benchmarks:
- Level 20–24: 2–3 runs per level
- Level 25–30: 3–4 runs per level
- Level 30+: Push toward Hell or NM Meph farms
The jump from Normal to Nightmare is steep on experience curves, but if you have Stealth, basic resistances, and a merc, you survive. Bring potions and tele-swap if you are a caster.
First Farms: NM Meph by Night One
By hour 8–10, your character is level 32–35 and ready for NM Mephisto. This is the goal of day 1: get farm-capable in an area that feeds runes, gear, and unique drops. Meph runs take 2–3 minutes per run (4–5 if you are geared light), and he drops runes up to Mal.
A NM Meph farm yields:
- 1 Mid-rune (Lum, Amn, Fal, Lem) every 6–8 runs
- 1 High-mid rune (Pul, Ko, Dol) every 12–20 runs
- Unique drops semi-regularly
- Tons of rares and magic gear for trade
By night one (hour 12–14), you should be running Meph reliably, listing your first trades (unique drops, rune stacks), and positioning yourself for early-ladder capital.
Listing Your First Trades
Economy timing matters on day 1. Early trades (hour 6–12) often see desperation buys and inflated prices for common items. A Stone of Jordan listed at hour 8 might trade for a Pul; by hour 16, the same SoJ trades for Lem or less as supply stabilizes.
List your first unique drops aggressively. Shako, Tal ammy, Unique body armor—drop them and move. Runes stay valuable all ladder season; uniques can glut the market fast.
By hour 12, start position-trading: flip cheap low runes into mid-runes with someone who is farming specific content and wants to concentrate rune purchases. Your capital compounds, and by day 2, you have the first Enigma attempt brewing in your party.
