Season 16 Leveling Uniques: The Patch 3.4 Buffs That Matter
Patch 3.4 rebalances ten leveling uniques and the Isenhart's Armory set for Reign of the Warlock on Online Ladder and Offline. Here is each change by required level, a per-hit comparison using base weapon damage, and a chase, use-if-found or skip call on every item.
The leveling buffs worth chasing in Season 16 look like The Tannr Gorerod for raw melee damage, The Salamander for Fire Ball Sorceresses and The Atlantean for Zealots, going by the numbers alone. Most of the rest are use-if-found. These are Patch 3.4 changes for Reign of the Warlock on Online Ladder and Offline.
Online Non-Ladder, Classic and Lord of Destruction keep the old stats, and Blizzard doesn't say what happens to copies that already exist. Season 16 hasn't launched, so every rating below is a prediction from the numbers, not a result from play. The source is Blizzard's Season 16 announcement, and the full before-and-after tables are in our Patch 3.4 notes breakdown.
Season 16 Item Changes by Required Level
"Avg hit" is the base weapon's average damage, as listed on its item page, times (1 + the midpoint of the new ED range), plus flat and elemental damage on the item. It ignores stat bonuses and skills, so use it to compare weapons, not to predict kill speed.
Levels 8 to 21: Stopgaps and One Real Chase
Dimoak's Hew now rolls +100-150% ED and swaps its Dexterity for +20 Strength. On a Bardiche that is about 32 per hit, a fine stopgap with its +20% IAS and not something to farm.
Serpent Lord is the odd one. Its Long Staff base is tiny, but the item steals 100% of damage as mana, adds +15% IAS and now rolls +40-80% ED with +5 minimum damage. A melee character that keeps running dry on mana should enjoy it. Casters gain nothing, since spells don't leech.
Griswold's Edge lost Knockback, which is itself a buff for melee, because shoving monsters away meant chasing them. In its place come a 25% slow and a small Amplify Damage proc. The Broad Sword base keeps the damage low, so the real value is +12 Strength and +100 attack rating.
The Salamander is the first real chase. A Sorceress gets +3 Fire Skills and +4 Fire Ball, which stack to +7 on Fire Ball, plus +10% FCR and 30% fire resist, all at level 21. The catch is fire immunity. If you plan a Blizzard Sorceress, skip it.
Levels 27 to 36: Where the Real Weapons Are
The Tannr Gorerod jumps from +80-100% to +200-220% ED and gains 5-9% life steal. That is the biggest damage gain in the leveling list, and the Pike needs only 60 Strength and 45 Dexterity. It is a slow base (speed modifier +20), so we would still chase it first and judge the swing speed in play.
Silks of the Victor picks up +20% FRW, +30% IAS, +50-100% ED and +15% MF. That is four new lines on top of +1 to all skills. The Ancient Armor base asks for 100 Strength, which gates it for most non-Barbarians. Use it if it drops and you can wear it.
The Grim Reaper's 100% Deadly Strike doubles every hit, which is how it reaches about 117 per hit after the ED jump from +20% to +80-120%. It is a decent Act 2 mercenary weapon, but The Tannr Gorerod out-hits it.
The Impaler is worth chasing only if you want to play Impale. Its +170-240% ED gives about 72 per hit on a War Spear, so the interesting new line is Repairs 1 Durability in 4 Seconds, which on paper suits a skill that burns through weapons.
The Atlantean drops from level 42 to 35, rolls +250-300% ED and adds +2-5 to Zeal on top of +2 Paladin skills, up to +7 Zeal in all. For a Zealot it should be the leveling sword. Coldkill more than doubles its cold damage to 80-100 and lands near 133 per hit as a one-hander, which suits a shield user, though it still trails the Tannr.
Isenhart's Armory and the Merc Question
Isenhart's Armory starts at level 8 with the Lightbrand, which now has +40% IAS. The full set gains +30% FRW and +25% FHR, and the pieces pick up cold and fire resist, magic resistance and 5% life steal. We would wear pieces as they drop and not farm for the set.
An Act 2 mercenary can carry Dimoak's Hew, The Tannr Gorerod, The Grim Reaper or The Impaler. Treat that as a bridge. Once you have the runes for Insight, our gear progression guide puts it on the mercenary for the Meditation aura, which would replace these weapons, and leveling guide 1-99 covers the route.
FAQ
What is the best leveling weapon in Season 16?
On paper, The Tannr Gorerod for melee and The Salamander for a Fire Ball Sorceress. The Atlantean is the pick for a Zealot Paladin. None of this is tested, and finding the item matters more than the ranking.
Do the Patch 3.4 item changes apply to Online Non-Ladder?
No. They apply to Online Ladder and Offline in Reign of the Warlock. Non-Ladder gets only the Season 15 changes in Season 16, such as the extra Faster Run/Walk on Bloodletter and Blinkbat's Form.
Is Griswold's Edge worth using after Patch 3.4?
Use it if you find one early, but don't chase it. The base is weak, so the better ED helps less than it looks, and Tannr or Coldkill beat it a few levels later.
Level With People Instead of Alone
XP comes faster in a full game. The LFG board lists runs forming right now, and once you create an account and save your Ladder Setup, the free-agent pool is where a leveling crew can find you.
