Dream Auradin Build Guide - D2 Resurrected
The Dream Auradin turns Holy Shock from a support aura into a real offensive engine by stacking two Dream runewords, then backs it up with Zeal and Conviction to strip immunities most Paladins cannot touch.
Build overview
The Auradin is the Paladin taken to its logical extreme: instead of leaning on a weapon skill for damage, you build around Holy Shock, a passive aura that deals lightning damage to everything near you and adds a lightning bonus to every melee hit. On its own Holy Shock is a nice bonus. Socketed with two copies of the Dream runeword — one in your shield, one in your weapon — it becomes a real damage source, hits lightning-immune-adjacent packs less often than you'd think, and comes with a free defensive proc that saves your life constantly.
Pros:
- Extremely tanky — Holy Shock's passive damage plus Vigor/Redemption keep you topped up without micromanaging potions
- Dream's "Lightning Nova when struck" proc turns melee crowds into a non-issue
- Cheap-ish to reach a very strong floor once you own two Dream bases
- Doubles as a fantastic party support character (Salvation, Conviction, Meditation swaps)
Cons:
- Two Dream runewords means two Vex/Lo/Ist and a Ber and a Jah investment — mid-tier ladder economy at minimum, not a starter
- Lightning-immune uniques (rare, but exist) can stall single-target damage
- Damage output trails a dedicated Hammerdin or Zealot against single bosses; this is a clear-speed and survivability build first
Stat allocation
- Strength: enough for your gear — typically 156–170 depending on shield/armor choice
- Dexterity: enough for max block with your shield (usually 60–75 with a Sacred Targe-class shield); the rest can go to Vitality if you would rather tank hits than avoid them
- Vitality: everything remaining
- Energy: none. Meditation aura and Holy Shock's own life/mana leech (from Dream) cover mana upkeep
Skill order 1-99 and breakpoints
Priority tree:
- Holy Shock — hard points to 20, more later if you have spare points. Every hard point adds flat lightning damage and radius.
- Zeal — your attack skill, 1 point minimum, more if you want faster clear (up to 20 is fine on a respec-rich ladder economy)
- Vigor — 1 point early for the movement/attack speed aura while running, useful pre-Dream
- Salvation or Cleansing — 1 point utility, Salvation for resist-shopping in parties
- Conviction — 1 point minimum on switch or as your main aura once geared; strips enemy resistance and defense hard enough to make Zeal hit reliably
- Prayer/Redemption — 1 point each for sustain if you have room
- Might/Blessed Aim — 1 point on weapon switch for merc buffing if desired
Leveling order: Sacrifice or Zeal first for early clear speed, adding Holy Fire around level 6 for the classic aura-cruise through Normal, then dumping points into Holy Shock from around level 30 onward once Dream is realistically on the horizon.
FHR breakpoints (Paladin, 9-frame base)
| FHR % | Frames | Notes |
|---|
| 0% | 9 | unplayable in Hell |
| 7% | 8 | |
| 15% | 7 | minimum comfortable target |
| 27% | 6 | good with Dream's shield alone |
| 48% | 5 | strong endgame target |
| 86% | 4 | luxury tier |
IAS breakpoints (Zeal, normal one-hand weapon)
| IAS % | WSM effective | Frames per Zeal swing |
|---|
| 0% | — | 16 |
| 9% | — | 15 |
| 20% | — | 14 |
| 32% | — | 13 |
| 52% | — | 12 |
| 86% | — | 11 |
Dream's flail base plus a few IAS jewels or War Traveler-tier boots gets you into the 32-52% bracket comfortably; do not overinvest in IAS at the cost of your resistances — Holy Shock damage scales off hard points and aura level, not weapon speed.
Gear by budget phase
Starter:
- Weapon: any fast one-hand (Flail, Scepter) with sockets, or a cheap Insight polearm if you're running Blessed Hammer as a stopgap
- Shield: Stormshield if affordable, otherwise a Monarch with resist runes
- Armor: Smoke or Stealth
- Boots/gloves/belt: rare resist pieces, Magefist or Chance Guards for +MF
Mid:
- One Dream in a Monarch or Sacred Targe — this alone transforms clear speed and survivability
- Weapon: Spirit sword or a fast rare while saving for the second Dream base
- Armor: Duriel's Shell or a rare with high resist rolls
- Merc weapon: Insight polearm
Endgame:
- Weapon: Dream flail (Vex Jah Lo in a 4-socket flail — note the flail recipe uses Vex, not Io)
- Shield: Dream in a Crown Shield or Sacred Targe (Io Jah Pul)
- Armor: Chains of Honor or Fortitude
- Helm: Guillaume's Face or a rare circlet with FHR/resist
- Belt: Verdungo's Hearty Cord for the flat life and DR
- Gloves: Draud's Deed or Magefist; Boots: Gore Rider or War Traveler
- Rings: Raven Frost + a resist/life ring, or dual Bul-Kathos rings for the attack rating
- Amulet: Mara's Kaleidoscope or a rare +2 paladin skills amulet
- Charms: life/resist small charms, Annihilus, Torch

Mercenary setup
Act 2 Might or Holy Freeze mercenary in an Insight polearm is the default — Might stacks physical damage onto your Zeal swings, Holy Freeze slows melee attackers around you. Treachery armor gives the merc Fade and Weapon Block for free survivability, and a Guillaume's Face or Vampire Gaze helm rounds out the kit. If you're running heavy party support, swap the merc to Defiance for extra defense on tanky fights.
Best farming targets
- Chaos Sanctuary — Conviction on switch strips the Oblivion Knights' curses and their own resistances, and Holy Shock chips every pack while you Zeal through
- Travincal — the Council members die fast to Zeal plus Holy Shock splash, and the run is short
- Pit/Ancient Tunnels — dense packs reward Holy Shock's radius damage; good bread-and-butter farm
- Baal runs — the tankiness of this build makes it one of the safest Baal farmers in the game, especially in a group
Leveling route and respec timing
Level through Normal on Zeal with a point or two in Sacrifice for AR, adding Holy Fire around clvl 6-12 for that classic Paladin aura cruise (works great with a group). Push Resist Fire/Cleansing as needed. Around level 40-50, once you have a rough plan for at least one Dream base, start committing hard points into Holy Shock — even a single Dream shield with +3 to Holy Shock from levels 40 onward noticeably speeds up Nightmare and Hell clears. Don't fully respec into the Auradin skill spread until you actually have Dream in hand; running Holy Shock with only 1-2 hard points and no Dream bonus is weak compared to just running Zeal/Fanaticism in the interim.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
- Running Dream without Conviction on switch. Dream's proc is defensive, not offensive — you still need Conviction (or a merc/party member's) to break enemy resistances for real damage.
- Neglecting FHR. This is a melee build that stands in the middle of packs; being frozen or stunned repeatedly because you skipped FHR breakpoints will get you killed in Hell.
- Overcapping Zeal hard points at the expense of Holy Shock. Holy Shock is your actual damage source at endgame — 1 point in Zeal is enough once your gear provides attack speed and AR.
- Skipping max block. Without meaningful block chance, a melee Auradin takes far more incoming damage than the build's tankiness implies. Get Dexterity to at least 60-75% block with your shield.
- Buying two off-brand Dream bases instead of one good one. A 4-socket ethereal Balrog Skin flail beats two mediocre bases; prioritize the weapon Dream on the best base you can find since it carries more of your offense.
