Soul Siphon Warlock Build Guide - Reign of the Warlock
The Soul Siphon Warlock trades burst damage for sustain — a channeled drain that heals you back for a percentage of everything it kills, letting you stand in packs that would delete a squishier caster. Full stats, skills, breakpoints and gear inside for the Reign of the Warlock class mod.
Build overview
Soul Siphon is the Warlock's signature life-drain channel from the Reign of the Warlock class mod — a continuous-cast beam that deals damage over time to everything it touches and returns a percentage of that damage to you as life. Unlike burst-nuke Warlock builds, Soul Siphon is built around uptime: you hold the channel down and walk into packs, and the drain both clears them and keeps your life bar full simultaneously.
Pros:
- Extremely self-sufficient — the drain's lifesteal means potions and Life Tap curses are almost never needed once geared
- Strong against dense packs since the channel hits multiple enemies in its path
- Very safe playstyle: you rarely take unanswered damage because you're healing while you fight
- Scales well with +skills and life-drain-friendly gear that's cheap on the trade market
Cons:
- Channeled cast means you're locked in place while draining, making it clunky against fast-moving or ranged threats
- Damage-over-time ramps up rather than bursting, so single hard-hitting bosses take longer than with a nuke build
- Undead and constructs resist the life-drain component, cutting into the build's core sustain gimmick
- A newer class mod means fewer community-tested BiS setups and thinner supply on some key uniques
Stat allocation
- Strength: enough for your armor and shield requirement, nothing extra
- Dexterity: enough for a comfortable block chance if using a shield, otherwise base
- Vitality: everything else — even with strong lifesteal you want a real life pool as a buffer for the first second or two of a fight before the drain ramps up
- Energy: base only; a few points if you're mana-starved early, but Soul Siphon's own gear pool leans on mana-after-kill and cheap mana costs already
Skill order 1-99
- Soul Siphon — max first. This is your entire offense and defense in one skill
- Drain synergy skills — the Warlock tree gives Soul Siphon two direct damage synergies; max both next, since each hard point adds flat damage-per-second to the channel and, by extension, more life returned
- Defensive/utility curve — 1 point each into your slow/chill curse analog and your mana-shield-style defensive skill for survivability while channeling
- Mastery skill — max last; it adds a flat percentage to all your cold/chaos-type Warlock damage depending on your Soul Siphon element, stacking multiplicatively with the synergies above
A typical endgame spread is 20 Soul Siphon, 20/20 in its two synergies, 1 point each in the curse and defensive utility skills, and the remainder into the mastery skill.
Breakpoints
Because Soul Siphon is a channeled cast rather than a discrete cast-and-release spell, Faster Cast Rate affects how quickly the beam locks onto a new target after you release and reacquire, and Faster Hit Recovery keeps the channel from being interrupted by incoming damage.
| FCR % | Frames to reacquire | Notes |
|---|
| 0% | 17 | unplayable at endgame |
| 9% | 16 | |
| 20% | 15 | |
| 32% | 14 | |
| 48% | 13 | practical minimum |
| 68% | 12 | comfortable farming target |
| 99% | 11 | best realistic breakpoint without exotic gear |
| FHR % | Frames | Notes |
|---|
| 0% | 9 | base |
| 7% | 8 | |
| 15% | 7 | |
| 27% | 6 | ideal — keeps the channel from stuttering in packs |
Prioritize FHR over FCR early since losing your channel to hit-recovery stun costs you both damage and healing at once; layer in FCR once your resist and life targets are met.
Gear by budget phase
Starter (leveling / first respec):
- Weapon: any fast wand or 1H sword with +Warlock skills if available on the trade market for the mod
- Shield: a basic +resist shield or any large shield for block
- Armor: Stealth or a cheap resist runeword
- Helm/boots/gloves/belt: whatever caps resistances first, life charms fill the rest
Mid (into Nightmare/early Hell):
- Weapon: a rare or crafted caster wand with +skills and FCR, or a class-mod unique wand if the trade market has one priced reasonably
- Shield: Rhyme in a small shield for FHR and resists, or a rare with life/resist/block
- Armor: Smoke for the resist/FCR combo, or Duriel's Shell for flat resist
- Helm: a rare circlet with +skills/life, or Rockstopper for early survivability
- Boots/gloves/belt: String of Ears for extra lifesteal (stacks nicely with the drain's own healing), Magefist for FCR, a rare resist belt
Endgame:
- Weapon: best-in-slot class-mod caster wand with +3 Warlock skills and FCR, or a crafted caster off-hand if the mod supports one
- Shield: Spirit in a Monarch for the FCR/FHR/resist package, or Lidless Wall for pure +skills/FCR/mana
- Armor: Chains of Honor for the resist/damage combo, or a dedicated +skills caster armor if the mod adds one
- Helm: Harlequin Crest for the +2 skills/life/MF/resist all-rounder stat line
- Boots: War Traveler or Sandstorm Trek for the extra vitality and resist
- Gloves: Magefist for the FCR, or Chance Guards if you're farming for drops on the side
- Belt: Arachnid Mesh for FCR and +1 skills, or String of Ears if you need the extra lifesteal cushion
- Rings: two Stone of Jordan for the mana/skill combo, or one SoJ plus a rare life/resist ring
- Amulet: Mara's Kaleidoscope for the flat +skills/resist, or a class-specific +skills amulet if the mod has one
- Charms: life and mana small charms, an Annihilus and Torch once available for the +skills and stat bump
Mercenary setup
Act 2 Nightmare Holy Freeze mercenary is the standard pairing — Holy Freeze slows anything that gets close while you're locked into the channel, covering the build's main weakness. Gear the merc with Insight (Cryptic Sword/Colossus Voulge) so his aura keeps your mana topped off during long drain sessions, plus Treachery or a Smoke armor and a Vampire Gaze or Tal Rasha's helm for survivability. An Act 1 cold mercenary is a reasonable substitute if you already have Insight built and want two Holy Freeze-adjacent effects covering different ranges.
Farming targets
- Dense pack areas (River of Flame, Chaos Sanctuary side rooms, Worldstone Keep) — Soul Siphon's beam clearing multiple enemies at once makes these ideal, since every kill feeds the drain's sustain loop
- Mephisto — a solid single-target test once your damage synergies are maxed; the fight is slower than a nuke Sorceress but far safer
- Andariel/Duriel — good early Hell targets while you're still building out FCR/FHR gear, since the drain's healing carries you through gear gaps
- Avoid undead-heavy zones (Catacombs, crypts) until you have strong flat damage from synergies — the drain's healing component is weaker against undead, removing the build's main safety net
Leveling route and respec timing
Level with whatever direct-damage Warlock skill is available earliest in the class mod's tree — most players use a basic bolt or nova-type skill through Normal difficulty since Soul Siphon's channel is mana-inefficient at low levels with few synergy points invested. Pick up Soul Siphon and its two synergies as soon as the skill tree allows, and respec into the full drain-focused spread once you clear Normal and have a couple of FCR items — typically clvl 35-45. Waiting until Nightmare to respec is fine too; the build's sustain profile means it isn't punishing to level with a different skill and swap once your gear catches up.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
- Standing still against ranged packs. The channel locks you in place, so archers and casters outside the beam's range can whittle you down while you drain melee targets — reposition between packs rather than committing to a bad angle
- Ignoring FHR. A stunned channel means zero damage and zero healing simultaneously; treat FHR as more urgent than raw damage gear early on
- Fighting undead-heavy areas expecting full sustain. The drain's healing is weaker against undead, so treat those zones as a damage-only fight and bring potions
- Underinvesting in the synergy skills. Because Soul Siphon's healing is a percentage of damage dealt, skipping synergy points doesn't just lower your damage — it directly lowers your sustain too, compounding the mistake
- Skipping Insight on the mercenary. Long channel sessions burn mana fast; without a mana-return source you'll find yourself breaking the drain constantly to chug blue potions, undercutting the whole point of the build
