Summon Druid Build Guide - D2 Resurrected
The Summon Druid fields a full zoo of pets — Ravens, Spirit Wolves, Direwolves, and a Grizzly tank — that can clear Hell almost entirely on their own while you kite and support with Oak Sage and Armor. Full skills, stats, gear tiers and farming routes inside.
Build Overview
The Summon Druid, often called the Zoo Druid, is the Druid class's answer to the Summon Necromancer: a pet-based build where the character's job is to buff and protect an army rather than deal direct damage. A maxed zoo consists of Ravens (blind and chip damage), five Spirit Wolves, three Direwolves, and one Grizzly bear, backed by Oak Sage (shared life for the whole party including you) and Heart of Wolverine (attack rating and damage aura for the pack).
Pros:
- Extremely safe — you rarely take a hit because the wolves and bear absorb aggro
- Cheap to gear relative to output; Beast in a mid-tier polearm alone transforms the build
- Excellent farmer for magic find since your own survival needs are low
- Strong party support via Oak Sage life and Heart of Wolverine damage/AR aura
Cons:
- Pathing issues — pets get stuck on terrain and clump around doorways
- Clear speed is noticeably slower than caster classes like Blizzard Sorceress or Trapsin
- Ravens and wolves die to AoE-heavy packs (Council, Gloams) if not re-summoned promptly
- Weak against physical immunes without a strong merc or Fire Storm as an on-switch option
Stat Allocation
- Strength: enough for your armor and weapon, typically 80-100 with a light armor choice
- Dexterity: none required unless you want blocking on a spare shield; leave at base
- Vitality: everything remaining after Strength — this is a squishy caster body underneath the pets
- Energy: none. Summons don't drain mana per hit, and you carry a small mana pool with Insight or ORB charms covering the rest
Skill Order 1-99
Leveling order (Summoning tree first, then support):
- Points 1-6: Raven (max eventually), 1 point in Poison Creeper, 1 in Carrion Vine as prerequisites
- Spirit Wolf to 1, then start pushing toward Summon Grizzly (requires level 30 and Clan tree prereqs)
- Max order once respecced: Ravens → Spirit Wolves → Heart of Wolverine → Oak Sage → Direwolves → Summon Grizzly (1 point) → Lycanthropy (1 point) → Poison Creeper/Solar Creeper (fillers)
- Grizzly only needs 1 hard point — its damage and life scale off +skills from gear (Spirit, Ravenlore, Skin of the Vipermagi w/ skiller charms), so pump the wolves and Ravens for pack damage instead
- Finish with 1 point each in Cyclone Armor (defensive emergency swap) and any remaining fire-tree filler if desired
Breakpoint table — FCR/FHR (Druid summons don't cast, so these apply to you personally when kiting or emergency-casting Armor):
| Stat | Breakpoint | Frames |
|---|
| FHR | 8 | 12 → 11 |
| FHR | 20 | 11 → 10 |
| FHR | 32 | 10 → 9 |
| FHR | 52 | 9 → 8 |
| FCR | 0/9/20/37/63/105/200 | standard Druid FCR table for Armor/Cyclone Armor casts |
Since you rarely cast spells mid-fight, FCR is a "nice to have," not a build requirement. Prioritize FHR breakpoints of 20-32% so you aren't frozen in place while pets clean up.
Gear by Budget Phase
Starter:
- Weapon: any 4-socket polearm/spear with +skills or a plain fast one; Wolfhowl helm if you can find it (turns you into a werewolf with +2 Summoning and Hunger, great filler)
- Armor: Twitchthroe or plain resist rare
- Rings/amulet/belt: whatever caps resistances, a cheap +1 Summoning skiller amulet if available
Mid:
- Weapon: 4-socket War Spear or Ogre Axe with Beast runeword (Fury Fort Gul Sur) — massive +skills, crushing blow, IAS, and free Fanaticism aura for the whole zoo. This is the single biggest power spike in the build
- Shield: Stormshield if pure survival, or a light shield with +Summoning skills
- Armor: Skin of the Vipermagi or Treachery
- Boots/gloves/belt: resist rare, Magefist optional (low FCR need)
Endgame:
- Weapon: Beast in the highest-damage ethereal polearm base available (Thresher, Cryptic Axe)
- Armor: Chains of Honor for resist all + damage reduction, or Enigma if you want personal Teleport mobility
- Helm: Ravenlore (+3 Raven, +3 Summon Grizzly, +2 Skeleton Mastery filler) or Jalal's Mane for +3 all Druid skills
- Amulet: Rare +2/+3 Summoning skills with resist
- Charms: Summoning skillers, MF small charms, Annihilus, Torch
Aim for 75 all resistance and don't overinvest in your own FCR — spend charm slots on skillers and MF instead.
Mercenary Setup
Act 2 Might mercenary in Andariel's Visage or a Guillaume's Face for aura synergy stacking (Fanaticism from Beast + Might merc = huge pack damage), Fortitude or Treachery body armor, and a fast ethereal polearm like an Insight-carrying weapon for endless mana on your merc's own casts. The merc acts as an extra frontline tank alongside the Grizzly.
Best Farming Targets
- Countess — fast, safe, low physical-immune risk, good rune drops for your own Beast/Chains upgrades
- Pit / Ancient Tunnels — open layouts let the pack spread out and clear efficiently without pathing chokepoints
- Travincal — Council members die fast to a full pack backed by Heart of Wolverine's attack rating boost
- Terror zones — rotate any zone that isn't heavily physical immune; sunder charms cover most exceptions
- Cows — the open field is ideal zoo terrain, though Cow packs punish slow re-summon timing after a wipe
Leveling Route and Respec Timing
Level with Raven and Poison/Carrion Creeper early through Normal — Poison Creeper's damage-over-time clears packs safely while you're squishy. Pick up Spirit Wolf and Oak Sage by the late teens for survivability. Grizzly becomes available at level 30; get it as soon as the prerequisite points allow, since a Grizzly tank massively reduces your own damage taken while leveling through Nightmare. Respec into the full summon-focused spread once you clear Nightmare and have picked up either a Beast base or at least a 4-socket polearm — going into Hell with an undergeared zoo is rough, so prioritize the runeword first.
Common Mistakes and How to Fix Them
- Not re-summoning promptly. Dead wolves and Ravens mean you're personally tanking — recast the moment you notice losses, don't wait for a full wipe.
- Skipping Heart of Wolverine. It's easy to undervalue as "just an aura," but the attack rating boost is what keeps your pack actually landing hits in Hell.
- Overinvesting hard points in Grizzly. One point plus +skills gear scales the bear fine; extra hard points are better spent on Wolves and Ravens for pack size and damage.
- Fighting in tight corridors. Zoo builds want open rooms so pets don't clump and block each other's pathing — reposition before engaging in narrow areas like Chaos Sanctuary corridors.
- Ignoring physical immunes. Without a Fire Druid backup or a Might merc bonus enough, you have no answer — terror zone rotations should route around them, and sunder charms are worth prioritizing early.
- Casting Oak Sage too late. Oak Sage grants shared life to the whole party — including summons — proportional to its slvl; recast it before engaging, not after your pack is already taking hits, since the life bonus doesn't retroactively heal existing damage taken during the gap.
- Neglecting the second shield/weapon switch. A cheap Call to Arms on switch lets you refresh Battle Command or Battle Orders for extra pet life and damage during tough pulls without giving up your Beast mainhand full-time.
Party Play and Group Farming
The Summon Druid shines in groups. Oak Sage's shared life pool benefits every party member standing near it, and Heart of Wolverine's attack rating and damage bonus stacks with other party auras like Paladin Might or Necromancer curses. In an eight-player game, a well-played Zoo Druid can functionally serve as the party's off-tank and support caster simultaneously, freeing a dedicated caster like a Sorceress or Trapsin to focus purely on damage. If you're building specifically for group play, prioritize Oak Sage's slvl over pure Wolf count — a level 20+ Oak Sage life bonus matters more to a full party than one extra Direwolf.
