PvP Warlock Build Guide - Reign of the Warlock
The Warlock is Reign of the Warlock's newest duel threat: a curse-and-damage hybrid built around Bloodletter items and sustained pressure rather than a single burst combo. Here is the early PvP skill spread, breakpoints, and gearing path.
Build overview
The Warlock is the flagship new class added by the Reign of the Warlock (RotW) mod, and PvP is where the class shows its identity most clearly. Unlike a Sorceress nuke or a Paladin desynch combo, the PvP Warlock wins duels through sustained curse pressure and life-drain damage over time layered underneath a defensive shell — it's a class built to outlast an opponent rather than one-shot them.
Pros:
- Curses reduce enemy defense and resistances continuously, so trade windows favor you the longer a duel runs
- Bloodletter-set synergy gives strong life leech and self-sustain that most classic classes can't match in PvP
- Solid innate physical mitigation makes the Warlock hard to burst down compared to caster classes
Cons:
- New class with a shallow duel meta — expect the matchup knowledge gap to close fast as more players learn counters
- No true instant-burst combo, so aggressive rushdown opponents can sometimes close the gap before curses fully ramp
- Gear-dependent for FHR; getting caught out of your breakpoint against Fury/WW classes is punishing
Stat allocation
- Strength: enough for Bloodletter set pieces and your chosen armor, typically in the 100-140 range depending on gear
- Dexterity: enough to reach a reasonable blocking chance with a Warlock focus item if your build uses one, otherwise minimal
- Vitality: the bulk of remaining points — PvP duels punish low life pools hard, and the Warlock's leech-based sustain only works if you survive the opening exchange
- Energy: a modest investment, roughly 50-75 base points, since curse spam and the damage-over-time kit drain mana faster than a pure melee class
Skill order 1-99
PvE leveling and PvP optimization diverge for this class more than most, so this order assumes you're building specifically for duels from the start.
- 1-12: Hex Bolt to 5 (early ranged poke), one point Warlock's Ward (mitigation aura), one point Soul Tether
- 12-20: Curse of Frailty to 10-12 hard points — this is your primary duel curse and the earlier it's maxed the sooner your damage output snowballs mid-fight
- 20-30: Blood Pact 1 (synergy for leech scaling), Grim Harvest 1, continue investing in Curse of Frailty toward its soft cap
- 30-45: Max Blood Pact — this synergizes both your leech and your curse duration, and is the backbone of the sustain-through-attrition plan
- 45-60: Max Grim Harvest for the damage-over-time tick that punishes opponents for standing in curse range
- 60-80: Finish Curse of Frailty to hard cap, then invest in Warlock's Ward until it caps your physical mitigation bonus
- 80-99: Remaining points into Soul Tether (extends effective HP via the tether mechanic) and one-point utility curses like Curse of Silence to shut down caster opponents mid-duel
Keep one point each in any prerequisite skills your client requires along this path (Hex Bolt and Soul Tether both gate later tiers) — the exact prerequisite chain varies slightly by RotW patch version, so check your in-client skill tree before committing points you can't easily respec.
Breakpoints
The PvP Warlock lives and dies on Faster Hit Recovery, since curse uptime means nothing if you're locked in hit-recovery animation against a Whirlwind Barbarian or a Fury Druid. FCR matters less here than for the class's PvM build, since most of the Warlock's PvP kit isn't cast-rate gated the way sorceress spells are.
| FHR breakpoint | Frames | % FHR needed |
|---|
| Base | 9 | 0% |
| 1st | 7 | 13% |
| 2nd | 5 | 30% |
| 3rd | 4 | 48% |
| 4th | 3 | 65% |
| 5th | 2 | 99% |
For duels, gear toward the 65% breakpoint (3 frames) at minimum — it's achievable with a rare amulet, FHR-rolled boots, and one or two small charms. The 99% breakpoint is a luxury reserved for min-maxed PvP-only gear swaps and isn't required to be competitive.
Gear by budget phase
Starter (early ladder, Normal/Nightmare):
- Weapon: any RotW-crafted curse-focused wand or Warlock-usable base with +skills
- Armor: cheap resist-all rare, or Smoke for the FHR/resist combo
- Rings/amulet: resistance rares to cap Normal/Nightmare resist penalties
Mid (Hell, pre-Bloodletter):
- Weapon: upgrade to a rare Warlock focus item with +curse skills and faster cast where available
- Armor: Skin of the Vipermagi or a rare +skills armor
- Belt/boots: FHR rares to approach the 48-65% breakpoint range
Endgame (PvP-ready):
- Full or partial Bloodletter set — the set bonuses scale leech and curse duration together, and even 3-4 pieces meaningfully change your duel sustain
- Weapon: best-in-slot Warlock focus with maximum +skills and FHR
- Boots/belt/gloves: dedicated FHR and resist pieces to lock in the 65% breakpoint without sacrificing life
- Charm inventory: small charms rolled for FHR and life, since a Warlock's effective HP pool matters more than raw damage in extended duels

Mercenary setup
Mercenaries are disabled in most 1v1 PvP arenas under standard RotW duel rules, so gear your merc purely for the PvM side of the character (an Act 2 Might or Holy Freeze merc with Insight, per the class's farming needs) and don't build around merc presence for duels. Check your specific ladder/mod ruleset before a tournament, since some community duel formats do allow mercenaries.
Best farming targets and why
While this is a PvP-focused guide, you still need to fund your Bloodletter set and PvP gear somewhere:
- Countess — fastest, cheapest rune income while you're assembling FHR and resist gear
- Mephisto — reliable mid-tier drops and a fast, low-risk run once your PvM skill spread (a separate respec) is online
- Whatever RotW's Warlock-specific farming zones drop Bloodletter pieces — check current mod patch notes, since RotW updates set drop locations periodically
Leveling route and respec timing
Level with Hex Bolt and basic curses through Normal, since the deep PvP skill investment (Blood Pact, Grim Harvest) isn't available or efficient until the mid-20s anyway. Respec into the full PvP spread above once you hit Hell difficulty and have farmed a rough draft of your FHR gear — going into PvP with the PvM skill spread is the single biggest mistake new Warlock players make, since the two builds want almost entirely different priority curses.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
- Underinvesting in Blood Pact. It's a synergy skill, easy to deprioritize, but it's what makes your sustain plan actually function in a long duel — skipping it turns you into a slow caster with no payoff.
- Ignoring FHR for damage stats. A Warlock stuck in hit-recovery animation against a fast melee opponent loses every extended trade regardless of curse uptime.
- Opening a duel without pre-casting your mitigation aura. Warlock's Ward needs to be up before contact, not reactively cast mid-exchange.
- Copying the PvM skill order for PvP. The two specs diverge hard after level 30 — use the order in this guide specifically for duels, and see pvp basics for general duel fundamentals that apply across every class including this one.
- Assuming Bloodletter is optional. It isn't a nice-to-have for competitive PvP Warlock — the set bonuses are the difference between a build that out-sustains opponents and one that just slowly loses.
