Best Runewords by Class: Full Cheat Sheet
Runewords define builds in D2R. This cheat sheet ranks the essential words for every class: cheap leveling words, budget mid-ladder cores, and expensive endgame pieces.
Best Runewords by Class: The Cheat Sheet
Runewords are the spine of every ladder character. Knowing which words matter for your class transforms a smooth leveling run into an efficient timetable and endgame prep into a focused farming target. This guide ranks the must-have and can-skip runewords for all eight classes from day one to endgame.
Sorceress: Leaf → Infinity
Sorceresses live on runewords. Leveling: Leaf (Tir + Ral) in a staff from level 19 carries fire through nightmare easily. Switch to Lore in the helm and Spirit in a sword or Monarch as soon as runes allow; cast speed matters immediately.
Mid-ladder: Stealth armor (Tal + Eth, level 17+) is universal and mandatory. Two Spirit builds (sword + Monarch) let you swap between elemental focuses, or dual-wield Spirits for fire. Call to Arms via swap grants Battle Orders; Treachery armor procs Fade for immense defense.
Endgame: Lightning Sorcs target Infinity on a merc (breaks cold immunity and procs Lower Resist), and then live in Enigma for teleport. Blizzard Sorcs use Fortitude or Chaos armor; Cold Sorcs can skip Infinity if stacking -cold resist gear. Heart of the Oak (Ko + Vex + Pul + Thul) is a cheaper alternative to Infinity if your merc doesn't need the Conviction aura yet.
Paladin: Spirit → Enigma
Paladins eat runewords for breakfast. Leveling: Spirit Monarch (Tal + Thul + Ort + Amn) at level 29 unlocks Blessed Hammer and doubles damage. Grab Lore for the helm, Stealth for armor, and Insight on a polearm for the merc.
Mid-ladder: Grief (Eth + Tir + Lo + Mal + Ral) in a phase blade or colossus voulge turns Smiters into glass cannons. Zealots swap to Grief for weapons or stack Crescent Moon for lightning. Call to Arms swap weapon is mandatory for Battle Orders. Treachery armor (Shael + Thul + Lem) triggers Fade and adds life leech.
Endgame: Enigma is not optional for Paladins who want to compete; teleport defines the meta. Smiters bind Exile (Vex + Ohm + Ist + Dol) on a Sacred Targe or Defiance on armor. Holy Fire Auradins stack Dragon (Sur + Lo + Sol) for the aura and fire scaling.
Necromancer: Beast → Chains of Honor
Necros pivot on build. Leveling: Wands become staffs fast; look for White (Dol + Io) in a wand by level 20 for +1 to all skills. Stealth armor, Lore helm, Insight merc polearm.
Mid-ladder: Bone builds use Spirit sword and staff. Summon Necros jump to Beast (Ber + Tir + Um + Mal + Lum) in a staff for +2 summon skills. Chains of Honor (Dol + Um + Ber + Ist) is the best armor for summon focus: +2 skills, poison resist, life all at once.
Endgame: Beast and Chains of Honor stay the core. Pride (Cham + Sur + Io + Lo) on a merc's polearm grants Concentration and massively scales summon damage. Enigma swaps in for pure utility.
Barbarian: Oath → Whirlwind rigs
Barbs are weapon-centric. Leveling: Steel (Tal + Eth) in an axe at level 9 is the earliest runeword but skippable; most Barbs wait for Stealth armor and build one Stealth rather than rush 2 runewords.
Mid-ladder: Oath (Shael + Pul + Mal + Lum) in a 2H sword gives +50% more damage and carries through nightmare on pure power. Grief (5 runes, huge invest) transforms into WW endgame but costs 2 copies (one per hand).
Endgame: Grief Threshers, one per hand, are the only path to respectable WW Barb DPS. Fortitude armor (El + Sol + Dol + Lo) stacks defense and life. Call to Arms swap. Highlord's Wrath or Duriel's Shell for the swap helm.
Druid: Leaf → Spirit/Beast parity
Druids split between casters and melee. Leveling: Leaf staff at level 19 carries fire leveling easily. Stealth, Lore, Insight merc.
Mid-ladder: Spirit sword unlocks Elemental builds (wind and fire). Beast staff grants summon scaling on Summoner builds. Both are huge power jumps.
Endgame: Wind Druids use Heart of the Oak (Ko + Vex + Pul + Thul) + Enigma for telecast. Elemental (fire/cold) stacks runeword words and uses Meteor/Blizzard via casting. Summoners stay on Beast and Chains of Honor; Rabies Druids use Bramble (Ral + Ohm + Sur + Eth) for poison scaling.
Amazon: Leaf → Faith rogue/bow rigs
Amazons struggle early but shine late. Leveling: Leveling is slow on jab and missile skills, but Stealth armor at level 17 plus a basic bow (any farmable runeword helps less here) gets you to Nightmare.
Mid-ladder: Zephyr or Melody bows are cheap runeword bases. Faith (Ohm + Jah + Lem + Eld) on a rogue merc is the real power; Fanaticism aura defines Amazon endgame and makes her damage competitive.
Endgame: Windforce or Titan + Faith merc is the standard. Bow Amazons can use Ice (Amn + Shael + Jah + Lo) for Holy Freeze aura vs bosses.
Assassin: Mosaic → Chaos WW hybrids
Assassins are niche but legendary in the right hands. Leveling: Stealth + Lore + Lore dual-wield (gloves) for cheap damage. Plague (Cham + Shael + Um) in a claw also carries if you find the runes early.
Mid-ladder: Mosaic (Mal + Gul + Amn) twin claws unlock charge-starved Martial Arts builds; Twin Dragon charges per-hit plus bonus DC is the appeal. Early endgame power spike.
Endgame: Chaos (Fal + Ohm + Um) in dual claws for Whirlwind Assassins is PvP-only viability but devastating in that niche. Treachery armor swap triggers Fade. Duress (Shael + Um + Thul) for armor if not swapping.
Warlock: No official runewords yet
Warlocks are unimplemented. When they arrive, expect hybrid stat scaling that favors cheap efficiency words early and high-rune words late, similar to Necro / Druid branching.
Budget-to-endgame upgrade paths
Every class follows a pattern: grab Stealth + Lore + Insight merc. Farm Countess or Andy for Spirit + Call to Arms swap runes. Then, depending on class, target one mid-ladder word (Grief, Beast, Oath, Mosaic) and sit there farming until high-rune drops let you upgrade to Enigma or specialized endgame words. Skipping the mid tier and rushing endgame leaves your character weak for weeks. The meta exists because it works.
