Enigma Runeword: Stats, Best Bases & Builds
Enigma is the runeword that changed Diablo 2 forever. Teleport on every class transformed the economy and the ladder. Here is what it gives you, which bases to hunt, and why every endgame character eventually wants one.
Enigma (Jah Ith Ber) did more to reshape Diablo 2 Resurrected than any other single item. When the runeword landed, it gave Teleport to Barbarians, Druids, Amazons and Necromancers — classes that never had mobility options. Suddenly, every character could farm Mephisto at competitive speed. The ladder economy inverted overnight.
Twenty years later, Enigma remains the chase item for every non-Sorceress endgame build. You do not need it to win, but its absence is felt every map you clear.
Enigma's stats and scaling
Enigma grants:
- +2 to all skills: a full class level and a half in equivalent stat points.
- +45% faster run/walk speed: one of the highest FRW rolls on any single item. Transforms lazy farming into brisk loops.
- +1 to Teleport: the true revolution. Teleport is now available on classes that have zero access to it normally.
- +(0.75 per character level) to Strength and Increase Maximum Life 5%: meaningful survivability and gear-slot flexibility on top of the mobility.
- 15% Damage Taken Goes to Mana (plus 1% per character level), Damage Reduced by 8%, and +14 Life After Each Kill: a real defensive package, not just a mobility rune.
The package is overkill for a single runeword. No other word stacks pure utility, mobility and raw power together. Enigma also removes the run-speed bottleneck that plagued non-Sorceresses in Nightmare and Hell. Before Enigma, a Hammerdin or Fury Druid had to trudge through maps. With Enigma, they teleport past trash and spend time on worth-it targets.
The three bases you need to know
Enigma demands a 3-socket armor, and base choice matters more than most runewords because you wear it for the full ladder season.
Mage Plate (STR 66, DEF 300-355 eth) is the baseline. It is light, does not wreck your attribute allocation, and rolls good defense. Non-eth bases are vendor food. Eth Mage Plates with good rolls (350+ defense) stay liquid all season and cost 1 SoJ to a few Bers depending on patch.
Archon Plate (STR 81, DEF 360-379 eth) is the prestige choice. It maxes defense and looks spectacular. It costs more STR, which matters less with Enigma's +energy, and it sells immediately. An eth Archon Plate with 375+ defense is endgame flex.
Loricated Mail is the speed freak's pick. It requires the least STR, giving your attribute allocation back to Vitality and Strength for damage. It also has a unique appearance that stands out in Baal runs. Few Enigma players bother, but if you value mobility breakpoints, Loricated saves points.
All three prefer ethereal bases. The 25% defense bonus compounds on Enigma's already-high rolls, and durability is trivial with Zod runes and self-repair mechanics. Ethereal items explained covers the repair math if you are nervous about eth durability.
Who uses Enigma and why
Hammerdins are the poster child. Spirit in your weapon and shield, Enigma on your body, and you now solo every endgame zone. Teleport plugs the movement gap that made earlier ladders a slog. Read the full Hammerdin guide for stat allocation and gear priority.
Summoner Necromancers reap the same benefit. Your army does the damage; Enigma lets you reposition safely and kite around threats. The class went from "decent" to "endgame viable" the day Enigma landed in D2R.
Fury Druids and Zealots gain freedom from run speed. Teleport turns melee farming from ground-restricted slugfests into arena-style boss rushes. Clear Pindleskin in half the time.
Area farmers (Chaos, Cows, Terror Zones) teleport past trash and minimize backtracking. The speed-per-run metric shifts dramatically in your favor.
The real use case: Enigma removes the penalty of not being a Sorceress. Every other playstyle becomes viable and ladder-competitive once you land one.
Cost and trade value
Enigma runes (Jah, Ith, Ber) are ladder economics' core. Jah and Ber are chase drops. Ith is common. A fresh ladder Enigma trades at 3-4 Bers or equivalent depending on patch and economy tightness. Once the ladder ages and more Bers enter supply, prices settle. A mid-ladder Enigma might cost 2-3 Bers; a late-season one could hit 1.5-2 if Ber prices crash.
The rune investment is steep. If you are new to ladder, Enigma is the second major purchase (after your Sorceress or Grief runeword for melee). Plan rune farming accordingly, or trade lower-tier gear and bases to accumulate the capital.
Building toward Enigma
New players should not rush Enigma. Build a Spirit, farm Countess for Insight and mid runes, and level with Lore + Stealth. Once your mercenary carries Infinity or Insight and your main character has a working build, then hunt Enigma capital. The runeword is worth the wait but not worth sacrificing your first two weeks of farming to chase runes you cannot drop yet.
The milestone matters. Landing your first Enigma is a ladder psychological turning point. Your farm speed doubles. Your safety margins expand. Maps that felt tight become highways. Enigma is not mandatory for winning D2R, but it is mandatory for understanding why every class suddenly became viable.
