Countess Runs: Rune Farming the Right Way
The Countess is the backbone of early-ladder rune farming. Learn her exact rune table, the fastest Tower route, and why consistent runs beat luck.
The Countess is D2R's most reliable rune source. She sits at the bottom of the Forgotten Tower with a special drop table that forces rune output on every kill, making her the first boss every rune-hungry ladder player memorizes. Practiced runs take under two minutes, and the consistency is unbeatable.
Why the Countess is the early rune printer
Unlike random bosses, the Countess has a unique rune-only drop table. She guarantees rune drops from her personal table—not affected by difficulty or player count—and the minions around her drop additional runes. No magic find matters; no luck involved. Thirty consistent runs almost always produce enough runes for your first Insight, Spirit, and leveling setup.
Early ladder, when everyone needs Tal, Ral, and Ort, she drops exactly that. She never rolls unique bases, set items, or rare garbage. Every corpse opens doors for a runeword build.
Rune ceiling by difficulty
Her rune cap rises with difficulty progression:
| Difficulty | Max Rune | Common Runes | Frequency |
|---|
| Normal | Ral | El, Eld, Tir, Ral | Nearly guaranteed per run |
| Nightmare | Ko | Nef, Eth, Ith, Tal, Ko | Steady stream, Ko rare |
| Hell | Lo | Lum, Ko, Fal, Lem, Pul, Um, Mal, Ber, Lo | Ends around Lem; Lo is rare |
Hell Countess is best treated as a steady source of mid runes (Lum through Lem) rather than a high-rune printer. Each run takes similar time, but the variance matters far less than sheer volume.
The Forgotten Tower route
Black Marsh from a waypoint is your gateway. Look for the ruined tower structure—it's a distinctive round building, often toward the edges of the map. Inside, five cellar levels await. Levels 1-4 are completely skippable; the Countess waits on level 5 at the far end of the bottom chamber.
Speed is critical: hug the outer walls as you descend, skip all side rooms, and search for stairs. Once you locate her chamber, kill the minions first (they carry rune drops), then finish the Countess herself. Reset, repeat.
Practice route memorization until it's muscle memory. The fewer mistakes—backtracking, wrong doors, lingering—the tighter your run times and the more total runes per hour.
Best builds and run times
Countess carries no fire or cold immunity in Normal; Nightmare has light resistance; Hell poses minimal defensive challenges. Any damage type works, but speed determines profit:
- Sorceress (Blizzard/Lightning): Teleport trivializes the route; runs under 90 seconds even in Hell.
- Barbarian (Whirlwind): No teleport, but aoe damage clears minions instantly. 90-120 seconds per run.
- Javazon: Fast clear, solid mobility; competitive run times.
- Necromancer (Summon): Slower, but safe and consistent.
Prioritize movement speed and area clear over magic find. The Countess's rune drop ignores MF entirely, so kill speed is your only lever. If you can teleport, do it. If you can't, clear fast.
Keys and the full run value
The minions surrounding the Countess drop more than runes—keys of terror drop here, and over a session, they accumulate. Three keys per difficulty are needed for Uber Tristram, making extended Countess sessions especially valuable early ladder when you're preparing to farm Uber Key Farming materials. Charm drops from the pack are usually white or magic charms; sell them for small gold unless you're gambling.
The real prize is consistency. Set a timer, nail the route, and watch runes accumulate. Thirty Countess runs will build multiple starter runewords faster than any other early option. Few habits in D2R pay off as quickly.
