Crafting in D2R: The Complete Primer
Crafting is the ladder economy's money printer. Learn the four craft families, how affix levels work, and which recipes generate wealth on any reset.
Crafting is the most underrated currency generator in Diablo 2 Resurrected. While most players gamble or pray for drops, crafters systematize wealth: buy cheap magic bases, add gems and runes, and output crafted items worth multiples of the input. Once you understand affix levels and the four craft families, you can print currency every ladder.
What crafting is and why it beats gambling
Crafting combines a magic base, a fixed low rune, and a perfect gem in the Horadric Cube to create a crafted item with guaranteed fixed mods and a random affix pool. The payout is tunable: control your base quality and your character level, and you influence both the affix tier and the item's resale value.
Gambling is random; crafting is deliberate. You invest 50k gold in a base and a rune, cube it, and emerge with either a trash item (vendor it) or a sellable crafted item that covers your 200 previous losses. Over 100 crafts, the average output crushes the downside risk.
The four craft families at a glance
Crafting recipes fall into four categories:
- Blood Crafts (melee gear, nearly every slot): magic base + a slot-specific low rune + Perfect Ruby + any jewel → guaranteed small life and 1-3% life leech (gloves add guaranteed crushing blow).
- Caster Crafts (caster gear): magic base + a slot-specific low rune + Perfect Amethyst + any jewel → guaranteed 4-10% faster cast rate plus mana mods.
- Hit Power Crafts (mostly a one-slot niche): magic base + a slot-specific low rune + Perfect Sapphire + any jewel → guaranteed Attacker Takes Damage plus hit-related mods (gloves add guaranteed Knockback).
- Safety Crafts (hardcore's favorite): magic base + a slot-specific low rune + Perfect Emerald + any jewel → guaranteed damage reduction and resist mods (the shield adds bonus block chance).
Each family targets a build type. Blood crafts serve melee damage; Caster crafts feed spell-slingers; Hit Power is narrow — its gloves are a PvP staple and the rest of the family is a footnote; Safety serves hardcore survivability more than softcore profit.
Recipe format: rune, gem, magic base
The cube recipe is always: magic base + a family-specific perfect gem + a slot-specific rune + any jewel. Both the rune and the base line are fixed by the exact recipe — swap either one and the cube does nothing. The base line determines the item you get out: Blood Gloves start from a magic Heavy Gloves, Sharkskin Gloves, or Vampirebone Gloves; Hit Power body armor starts from a magic Field Plate, Sharktooth Armor, or Kraken Shell. Cube the wrong base line and you get a dud, not a different family's craft.
The base must be magic (blue) quality. Normal, rare, unique, and set bases are all locked out of every craft recipe — cubing one of those with a rune and a gem does nothing. Perfect gems are gems rolled at 3/3 quality; flawed or normal gems break the recipe.
Affix level and ilvl/clvl math
Affix level is the prerequisite that gates which mods can roll — the higher the affix level, the better the suffixes and prefixes available. A craft's output affix level is not set by the rune; that is a persistent myth, and every recipe's rune is fixed low regardless of the quality you're chasing. The real formula is:
crafted ilvl = floor(clvl / 2) + floor(ilvl / 2)
— half your character level plus half the base's item level, both rounded down. That output ilvl sets the affix level, and the best mods gate hard: +2 to class skills on an amulet needs affix level 90, for example.
The base's item level (ilvl) is derived from the monster or area that dropped it — higher-ilvl bases push the output higher. But your character level matters just as much: crafting the same base at clvl 93 instead of clvl 60 can be the difference between opening the top affix tier and never seeing it. Farm high-ilvl bases and save your best crafts for your highest-level character.
Magic bases aren't just a good choice, they're the only quality the recipe accepts. Rare, unique, and set bases are locked out entirely.
The money crafts every ladder
Not all crafts are equal. The profitable ones are:
- Blood Gloves (magic Heavy Gloves/Sharkskin Gloves/Vampirebone Gloves + Nef + Perfect Ruby + jewel): guaranteed crushing blow plus life leech; melee players queue up for a good pair.
- Hit Power Gloves (magic Chain Gloves/Heavy Bracers/Vambraces + Ort + Perfect Sapphire + jewel): guaranteed Knockback is a PvP bowzon staple, and it's nearly the entire family's value.
- Caster Amulets (magic amulet + Perfect Amethyst + rune set by slot): FCR and mana rolls with a shot at the +2 class skills / +20 key skill combo — the highest ceiling craft in the game.
- Safety Shields (magic Small Shield/Round Shield/Luna + Nef + Perfect Emerald + jewel): guaranteed damage reduction plus bonus block on a Luna base sells to hardcore players and stays in your own stash otherwise.
Run 30-50 crafts of each profitable type, and you'll land a handful of items that sell for multiples of your rune investment. The downside (trash rolls) vendors for your rune cost back.
