The Horadric Cube is the most versatile crafting tool in Diablo 2 Resurrected. Combine items inside and transmute them into something more powerful: upgrade runes and gems, socket items, reroll rare gear, imbue items with random stats, recover essences from boss kills, and open gateways to secret cow levels and isolated boss arenas. Mastering the Cube is the difference between a character stuck on gear and one that scales into the endgame.
Rune Upgrades: The Currency Engine
Three low runes combine into one rune of the next tier. This is the primary way you climb from low runes to mid and high runes for endgame runewords.

These upgrades are the backbone of rune farming optimization. Spirit (Tal, Thul, Ort, Amn) and Insight (Ral, Tir, Tal, Sol) are built entirely from low runes, so both are early targets. The mid tiers (Lum, Ko, Fal, Lem, Pul) are the stepping stones to the high runes used in endgame words like Infinity and Enigma.
Gem and Crystal Combines
Perfect gems combine upward just like runes, but in batches of three. This matters for crafting (perfect gems are used in crafting recipes) and for socket fills.

Perfect gem recipes are less economical than rune upgrades because gems are easier to farm in quantity. But if you have leftover flawless gems from chaos or Ancient ruins farming, cubing them to perfects can prep you for socket fills on +2 gear.
Socketing and Socket Filling
Add sockets to a normal-quality (not magic/rare/unique) item by cubing it with two specific runes and one specific perfect gem. Every item category uses a different rune-and-gem combo, and the number of sockets you get is random, scaling with the item's level and type rather than a guaranteed fixed count — you cannot pick how many sockets land.

Once you add sockets, fill them with gems, jewels, or runes. Perfect gems grant flat elemental damage or resistance depending on gem color; jewels grant random affixes; runes grant skill bonuses or runeword effects when placed in the right sequence and base.
Upgrading Unique and Set Items
Upgrading only works on unique and set items (not rares — those use a separate reroll recipe below), and it keeps the item's original affixes while boosting its base defense or damage to the higher base's numbers. This is how a Skullder's Ire keeps its % Magic Find but gains real defense, or how an early-ladder unique weapon scales into Hell.

Rerolling rare item affixes is a separate recipe and does not need runes at all:

Both reroll recipes are a gamble — the item stays rare with a new random affix roll, good or bad.
Boss Essence Combines and Respeccing
Diablo, Mephisto, Andariel and Duriel each drop a unique essence type when killed (available from Nightmare difficulty onward). Combine one of each of the four essence types to create a Token of Absolution, which fully resets your skill and stat point allocation.
