Diablo 5 Story: Diablo Has Won and Sanctuary Has Fallen
Blizzard says Sanctuary has fallen and Diablo has won. What is confirmed about the Diablo 5 story: the Heir to Westmarch, Dread Commanders, the caravan, background on Westmarch, the Sisters of the Sightless Eye and the Eternal Conflict, and what Blizzard has not said yet.
The Diablo 5 story starts after a defeat. Blizzard says Sanctuary has fallen, Diablo has won, and the heroes of the past are gone or failed, so the player is the Heir to Westmarch, on the run through a ruined kingdom that is now an outpost of Hell. The official name is Diablo V, it is due in Spring 2029, and as of November 2026 that is the story Blizzard has put in writing. The full picture is in Diablo 5 Release Date and Everything We Know So Far.
The story details below come from Blizzard's Diablo V panel post and its BlizzCon 2026 opening ceremony recap. Background from the older games is labeled as background, and open questions are listed at the end.
What Is the Story of Diablo 5?
Diablo has conquered Sanctuary, the mortal world, and the heroes who stood against him in the past did not stop him. Blizzard describes the conquest as a stepping stone: his goal is to invade the Heavens, so he uses the people and souls of Sanctuary as weapons in the Eternal Conflict between Heaven and Hell. He rules from the throne of Westmarch, and he is present from the moment the game begins. Blizzard has not said how his presence shows up on screen.
Who Is the Heir to Westmarch?
The player is the Heir to Westmarch, running through the charred remains of a kingdom that is now an outpost of Hell. The Heir has a mysterious connection to Diablo that makes them both a threat to him and uniquely vulnerable to his influence. That single line sets up the central tension: the Heir is the person Diablo has reason to fear and the person most open to his influence.
Blizzard has not said what the connection is or where it comes from, and no hero is named in its posts.
What Is Westmarch in Diablo Lore?
This section is background, not news from Blizzard. Westmarch is one of the Western Kingdoms of Sanctuary, alongside Khanduras, where Tristram stands. Players have been there before: Diablo III: Reaper of Souls sets its fifth act in Westmarch, with the angel of death Malthael as the antagonist.
In Diablo V, Blizzard describes Westmarch as the throne Diablo rules from and a kingdom reduced to charred remains. Blizzard has not said whether Diablo V builds on those earlier events, and this post does not assume it does.
Who Are the Sisters of the Sightless Eye?
Also background: the Sisters of the Sightless Eye are the Rogues of Diablo II's Act 1, an order of warrior women known for archery. After Andariel drove them from their Monastery, they gathered in the Rogue Encampment, where Akara and Kashya lead them. Kashya also hires out Rogue archers as Act 1 mercenaries. The site's Act 1 story guide covers that chapter in full.
Blizzard says the Diablo V caravan includes a former Sister of the Sightless Eye. It names neither her nor the reason she is described as former.
What Is the Eternal Conflict?
Another piece of background: the Eternal Conflict is the long war between the High Heavens and the Burning Hells. Sanctuary was created as a refuge outside that war, and the Prime Evils, Diablo, Mephisto and Baal, are the demon lords who have threatened it in the earlier games. Blizzard's Diablo V premise frames Diablo's plan in the same terms, with Sanctuary as a stepping stone toward the Heavens. The Prime Evils: Diablo, Mephisto & Baal has the history.
What Are Dread Commanders and the Caravan?
Blizzard says some humans have been corrupted into Dread Commanders. On the player's side, there are no towns or strongholds left to survive in, so the Heir builds a caravan of allies who travel along and act as vendors and companions. Blizzard's named examples are the former Sister of the Sightless Eye and a stranded Treasure Goblin.
The Western Continent is at the heart of Diablo's reign. Terrain, points of interest, monsters and rewards change when you return, so the world the Heir crosses is not meant to stay the same.
What Blizzard Has Not Said Yet About the Diablo 5 Story
As of November 2026, these questions are open. Where a guess appears, it is marked with "could" and is not news.
- When it is set. Blizzard has not said when Diablo V takes place relative to Diablo IV or how much time separates them.
- Other Evils. No Prime or Lesser Evil other than Diablo has been named. Mephisto, Baal or any Lesser Evil could appear, but Blizzard has not said so.
- Returning heroes. No hero, old or new, has been named. The Demon Hunter and Monk are returning classes, but Blizzard has not tied either one to a named character.
- The Heir's connection to Diablo. Blizzard calls it mysterious and has not explained it. It could be the thread the campaign follows, but that is a guess.
- Campaign structure. Not described yet.
