Necromancer Class Overview: Army & Curses
Necromancers dominate D2R through summoned armies and utility curses. Explore the three playstyles—Summon, Poison, and Bone—and learn why the Fishymancer remains the defacto ladder starter.
The Necromancer is Diablo 2's Swiss Army knife. While other classes excel at one task, Necromancers layer minions, corpse abuse, and curses into synergistic farms. A Summon Necro amasses 20+ minions to clear Mephisto or Pindle. A Poison Necro farms with Corpse Explosion. A Bone Necro launches bone spears across the screen. All three paths stay competitive into endgame, and the class' flexibility means you can respec into whatever farm route the ladder economy demands.
Class Identity: Three Pillars
Necromancers operate on three core mechanics that define the entire class:
1. Summoned Minions — Necromancers raise undead skeletons, golems, and revived corpses. These minions apply your merc position redundantly: they can tank bosses, generate auras on revived champions, and let you stand back casting spells. No other class deploys armies this easily.
2. Corpse Abuse — Dead bodies are not waste; they are resources. Corpse Explosion detonates them for massive AOE damage. Revive brings them into your army. Iron Maiden curses bounces damage back into melee packs. Necromancers treat maps like loot pinatas—leave corpses for later and chain explosions.
3. Utility Curses — Lower Resist breaks nearly every resistance in the game. Amplify Damage adds Physical Piercing. Decrepify slows and reduces enemy defenses. Confuse scatters packs. Curses are party-wide debuffs that turn your team into a machine. In endgame multiplayer, a curse Necro out-plays pure damage dealers.
The Summon Necromancer Path: "Fishymancer"
Summon Necro is the ladder starter everyone runs week one. The build is so efficient it earned the nickname "Fishymancer" (from a famous old guide). Here is why it dominates:
Setup: Invest 20 points into Skeleton Mastery, Skeleton Warriors, and Revive. Grab Amplify Damage to pierce physical immunity on raised champions. The rest flows into synergy skills (Golem Mastery, Lower Resist).
The payoff: You raise 12 skeletons + golems + revived champions. Let the army crash into a pack while you cast Amplify Damage and Lower Resist, turning the battlefield into a minion festival. Mephisto dies to minion collision while you stand back teleporting safely.
Endgame: Summon Necros can wear cheap gear and farm forever because the build asks little of you defensively. Enigma lets you teleport for positioning. Chains of Honor armor stacks resistances and +skills. A Pride mercenary with Infinity decimates bosses through your minion swarm.
The weakness: against cold-immue bosses (Andariel), you lean on minions for raw damage, and physical immune packs demand Lower Resist pre-casts. Still, minion AI pathfinding is reliable enough to carry you through all content.
The Poison Necromancer Path
Poison Necro pivots away from summons and instead stacks poison damage from bone spells like Poison Dagger and Poison Explosion. Corpse Explosion becomes the damage dealer.
Setup: Poison Nova and Poison Explosion scale from Hard Points. Corpse Explosion carries synergy. Revive stays for utility. You might drop summons entirely and run curse + Corpse Explosion, making corpses your primary weapon.
Advantages: Poison ignores most resistances (only 39 unique monsters immune). Corpse Explosion lets you reuse every dead body as an AOE trigger. Huge damage scaling compared to summons.
Disadvantages: requires corpses to exist (must clear packs first) and relies on you casting Corpse Explosion manually in each room. Slower mapping than Summon but higher ceiling damage.
Poison Necro shines for boss farming and hot-spots with dense corpse generation.
The Bone Necromancer Path
Bone Necro launches Bone Spear and Bone Prison from range, using Bone walls to block enemies.
Setup: Max Bone Spear and synergies. Grab Bone Prison for crowd control and Bone Wall for tanking. This build is fully independ ent—no minions required, pure solo damage.
Strengths: Pure damage dealers do not depend on minion pathing or AI. Frame data is consistent. Bone Spear ignores line of sight to some extent.
Weaknesses: Bone Necro scales worse than summons early ladder and demands more personal gear investment. Less effective in crowded zones.
Bone Necro is a passion project for dedicated Necro players, not a ladder day-one choice.
Utility and Curses: The Hidden Strength
Outside pure damage, Necromancers carry utility no class rivals:
- Lower Resist — reduces enemy poison/magic/fire/cold resistances by up to 95 (uncapped). Mandatory for poison and magic builds in party play. Turns cold immunes into killable targets.
- Amplify Damage — adds 50% of your character level as physical damage to melee. Breakpoints matter (soft cap at 120 hard points). Turns minion damage from tickles into threats.
- Decrepify — slows enemy movement and action speed by 50% and lowers defense by 50%. Invaluable for kiting and survivability.
- Iron Maiden — bounces 5–20% of melee damage back into attackers. Reflects damage can oneshot careless attackers.
A curse-focused Necro in multiplayer games can carry teammates who would otherwise die.
Mercenary Pairing and Gearing
Every Necro variant pairs well with an Act 2 Might merc using Insight runeword for mana regen. Summoners benefit from Pride runeword for Concentration aura boosting minion damage. Bone Necros run Infinity to break cold immunity.
Core gear is cheap: Spirit sword + Lore helm + Chains of Honor chest. Endgame upgrades are Enigma armor and Heart of the Oak staff.
Why Necromancer Starts Every Ladder
Summon Necro combines efficiency (farm day 1 with no gear), scaling (farm day 60 with slight upgrades), and flexibility (respec to Poison or Bone if you get bored). No other class offers this trifecta. A Necromancer player on week one is never behind; they are just waiting for the wealth to trickle in from other peoples' starter runs.
If you want a class that never caps out on viability and farms any content solo or in groups, Necromancer is the pick.
