Berserk MF Barbarian (Horker) Build Guide - D2 Resurrected
The Horker turns Berserk's magic damage and defense-ignoring hit into a fast, safe kill button, then follows every corpse with Find Item to double the loot pull on the richest pack targets in the game.
Build overview
Berserk is one of the strangest skills in the Barbarian tree: it converts your weapon damage to magic damage, ignores the target's defense entirely, and hits 100% harder — at the cost of taking 100% more damage yourself for the swing's duration and losing your defense while active. On paper that sounds reckless. In practice, this build (nicknamed the Horker after a well-known community guide) pairs Berserk with Warcry-based crowd control and Find Item to turn a farming run into a loot-optimizing engine: stun the pack, one-shot everything with magic damage that ignores their inflated Hell defense, then walk the corpses with Find Item for a second roll on drops.
Pros:
- Magic damage ignoring defense means Berserk kills things a strength-based Barbarian would bounce off of
- Find Item is a genuinely underused mechanic — a second drop chance per corpse on dense packs is huge over a farming session
- Very safe when played correctly: Warcry stuns everything before you commit to Berserk swings
- Cheap relative to a WW Barb — no Grief/BotD requirement
Cons:
- Magic damage is still resistible, and a few magic-resistant uniques will shrug it off
- Defense drops to zero while Berserking, so positioning and Warcry timing matter — sloppy play gets you killed
- Single-target focused; not a screen-clearing speed farmer the way WW is
Stat allocation
- Strength: enough for your gear, typically 150-170 with a Breath of the Dying or similar weapon
- Dexterity: enough to reach a comfortable attack rating floor, or just enough for weapon requirements if you stack external AR sources (Battle Command charms, BO)
- Vitality: the rest — this is a melee build that tanks hits, prioritize life
- Energy: none
Skill order 1-99 and breakpoints
- Berserk — max first, this is your damage
- Warcry — max second; the stun on hit disables entire packs so you can Berserk safely
- Shout/Battle Command/Battle Orders — 1 point each, these are the Barbarian's core buff shouts and scale from +skills anyway
- Find Item — 1 point is enough since it functions on corpses regardless of level (higher levels mostly increase the gold-find aspect and let you use it more often via lower cooldown)
- Iron Skin/Natural Resistance — 1 point each for passive survivability
- Increased Speed/Increased Stamina — 1 point each, quality of life
FHR breakpoints (Barbarian, 9-frame base)
| FHR % | Frames |
|---|
| 0% | 9 |
| 7% | 8 |
| 15% | 7 |
| 27% | 6 |
| 48% | 5 |
| 86% | 4 |
IAS breakpoints (Berserk, two-hand weapon class)
Berserk uses the weapon's normal attack speed table; two-handed weapons (axes, swords, maces) need more IAS to hit the same frame breakpoints as one-handers. Rough targets with a typical two-hand base:
| IAS % | Frames per swing |
|---|
| 0% | 14 |
| 14% | 13 |
| 32% | 12 |
| 52% | 11 |
| 86% | 10 |
You don't need to chase the top breakpoints hard — Berserk's value is the guaranteed hit and the Find Item follow-up, not raw attacks-per-second the way a WW Barb needs.
Gear by budget phase
Starter:
- Weapon: any fast two-hand axe or sword with sockets, or an Ancient's Pledge-tier rare
- Armor: Stealth or a rare with resist rolls
- Boots/gloves/belt: whatever caps your basic resists, Chance Guards for +MF if you have them
Mid:
- Weapon: a rare Berserker Axe or an Ethereal two-hand base with high base damage — Berserk's magic conversion scales off weapon max damage, so raw damage rolls matter more than elemental mods here
- Armor: Duriel's Shell or a cheap rare
- Belt: Goldwrap for the gold-find and life, or a rare resist belt
- Merc: Act 2 Might mercenary in a fast Insight polearm to keep packs softened before you Berserk
Endgame:
- Weapon: Breath of the Dying (Vex Hel El Eld Zod Eth) for the massive damage boost, indestructibility, and +skills — the signature Horker weapon
- Armor: a light rare or Duskdeep-tier helm plus a resist-capped rare torso; you don't need heavy DR since Berserk is a burst-and-retreat playstyle
- Belt: Goldwrap or a Verdungo's if you want the flat life and DR buffer instead
- Gloves: Chance Guards for the MF and AR; Boots: Gore Rider or War Traveler
- Rings: dual Nagelring or Raven Frost + a rare MF ring
- Amulet: a rare with +MF and life, or Cat's Eye for the FHR/AR
- Charms: Gheed's Fortune, MF small charms, Hellfire Torch, Annihilus

Mercenary setup
Act 2 Might mercenary (Nightmare, for the aura level) in an ethereal Insight polearm is the standard pairing — his physical damage aura and constant attacks help pre-soften packs before your Warcry stun locks them down, and Insight removes any mana concerns from your own build entirely. Treachery armor and a Vampire Gaze or Guillaume's Face helm round out survivability.
Best farming targets
- Travincal — the namesake farm. Warcry stuns the Council, Berserk one-shots them individually while their defense is irrelevant, and each corpse gets a Find Item pass for a second drop roll. Extremely gold-rich too thanks to Find Item's bonus gold.
- Secret Cow Level — dense, low-defense packs are exactly what this build wants; stun a group, Berserk through it, Find Item the corpses on the way past
- Pit/Ancient Tunnels — solid generic MF farm with good pack density
- Countess — fast rune-focused runs where Find Item barely matters, but Berserk's guaranteed hit makes short work of her
Leveling route and respec timing
Level with Bash into a light Warcry investment through Normal — Bash is a reliable single-target attack while you level dual-wield or two-hand melee. Pick up Warcry around level 12-18 for the stun utility early, since it's useful even at low levels for controlling packs. Commit hard points into Berserk starting around level 30, once you have a real two-hand weapon with decent base damage; running Berserk on a weak weapon before then is a downgrade from just Bashing normally.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
- Berserking without a Warcry stun first. You lose your defense entirely while Berserking — an unstunned pack punishes this hard. Always stun, then swing.
- Ignoring weapon base damage in favor of elemental mods. Berserk converts your weapon's damage to magic; a big flat damage roll on the base weapon matters far more than an ethereal bonus or minor elemental add.
- Forgetting Find Item entirely. The whole point of this build over a generic melee Barb is the double drop chance — walk every corpse after a pack dies, don't just move on.
- Underinvesting in life. This is a build that intentionally spikes its own incoming damage during Berserk swings; skimping Vitality for more Strength/Dexterity than your gear requires is a common way to die to unlucky pack aggro.
- Fighting magic-immune or heavily magic-resistant uniques with Berserk alone. Swap to a normal attack or let the merc handle those specific targets instead of wasting swings.
