Barbarian Class Overview: Shouts & Steel
The Barbarian is D2R's damage dealer and utility engine. War cries buff entire parties, Find Item turns mob corpses into gold, and raw physical damage output rivals casters in endgame. Learn the playstyle, the best builds, and why every ladder has Barbs.
The Barbarian Identity
The Barbarian is Diablo 2''s self-reliant bruiser. While Sorceresses lean on mana pools and crowd control, Barbarians stack health, resistances and pure physical damage. Their signature tool is the war cry system—a suite of shouts that buff the user and nearby allies, making Barbarians mandatory in group play. Solo, they excel through raw survivability and DPS that scale directly with weapon choice and gear rolls.
The core appeal: Barbarians do exactly what you tell them to do. No proc-based chaos, no breakpoint cliffs. Whirlwind a monster until it dies, Berserk a boss, or use Shout to keep your party alive. That simplicity, combined with end-game scaling potential, keeps Barbs relevant every ladder.
Core Skills and Playstyle
Barbarian skills branch into three trees: Combat Masteries, War Cries and Combat Attacks.
Combat Masteries are passive power. Whirlwind Mastery, Sword Mastery, Axe Mastery and others grant flat damage bonuses that apply to all attacks. A fully geared Barbarian stacking these masteries can scale DPS indefinitely with item rolls. Mastery also improves critical chance and attack speed breakpoints, letting you hit the sweet spots that define farming speed.
War Cries are the utility engine. Battle Orders applies life and mana regeneration to the entire party, making it the single most valuable buff in group play. Shout stacks defense, Taunt pulls aggressively, and the lesser-known cries like Natural Resistance cover emergency utility slots. Most endgame Barbarians build these into a weapon-swap loadout, hitting BO then swapping to the main weapon before engaging.
Combat Attacks deliver damage. Whirlwind chains strikes in a spinning radius, clearing packs faster than single-target skills. Berserk unleashes physical and magical damage in a massive burst, excellent for Unique and Super Unique bosses. Frenzy provides unmatched attack speed for critical-strike builds. The weapon choice matters enormously—a Grief phase blade swung in Berserk does what most abilities only dream of.
Signature Builds
The Whirlwind Barbarian dominates the PvM meta. Two-handed weapons or dual-wield phase blades in Grief runewords create a spinning damage engine that clears Hell Cow Level and Chaos Sanctuary in under a minute per zone. WW's AoE clears packs indiscriminately, making it the fastest pure damage build in the game by sheer clear speed. The stat priority is straightforward: enough resistances to survive, enough health to avoid one-shots, then stack every point of damage you can.
The Berserk or "Smiter" Barbarian pivots to single-target assassination. Berserk converts weapon damage to physical and magical damage simultaneously, letting Barbarians ignore monster resistances that would wall-off casters. A Smiter geared for Uber Tristram with Exile, Grief, and proper survivability can farm the hardest content solo. This build also thrives in PvP where one-rotation kill potential keeps opponents off balance.
The Berserk MF Barbarian splits the difference: enough damage to kill fast, enough magic find to profit from corpse runs. Find Item triggers on corpses, scaling the drop rates of everything except runes. A Barb with 200+ MF and Berserk's burst damage can farm Mephisto or Council faster than dedicated MF setups while generating genuine wealth in dropped uniques and rares.
The Find Item Economy
This is the Barbarian's hidden superpower. Find Item activates on each corpse, rolling magic-find-enhanced drop tables independently of normal kills. A Barbarian clearing a pack of 30 monsters effectively rolls 30 separate magic find chances. Over an hour of farming, this compounds into real wealth that dedicated MF characters struggle to match. Because runes ignore magic find entirely, pairing Find Item with speed makes Barbarians excellent early-ladder wealth generators who build their own runewords faster than they can wear them.
The Party Role: Battle Orders
Every top-tier party runs at least one Barbarian for Battle Orders. The shout applies flat life and mana bonuses to the entire group, turning fragile glass cannons like Lightning Sorceresses into legitimate survivors. A solo BO Barb in endgame gear can quadruple the effective health pool of an entire party. This makes Barbarians critical infrastructure. Solo players often level a second Barb just for BO when joining group games, and group economies revolve partly around timing when the BO Barb logs on.
Building Your First Barb
Start with Berserk and dual-wield cheap phase blades or a single large two-handed weapon. Priority stats are resistances first (75% to all elements is non-negotiable in Hell), then life (300+ is comfort), then damage scaling. Stealth armor carries you through leveling, a cheap Insight mercenary handles mana problems, and even a generic "faster hit recovery and life on hit" rare ring is enough to enable Berserk killing.
Once you have Grief and Exile, your Barb transforms from functional to competitive. At that point, the build ceiling is genuinely high—there is no stat soft-cap, no breakpoint cliff, just more damage with more investment. A perfect-roll Grief on an eth base with +3 damage jewels in a Berserk Barb will compete with Griefs wielded by other classes. Barbarians scale with gear complexity in ways that reward optimization.
Mercenary and Support Role
Every Barbarian should run an Act 2 mercenary (for their aura synergies). Holy Freeze mercs prevent monster packs from kiting. Might aura mercs boost your physical damage (does not stack with your own Might if you have it, but multiplies damage output when used solo). A budget Insight polearm on the merc solves all mana problems for early progression.
In groups, a Barbarian's secondary role is often "the BO bot"—the player who applies Battle Orders then switches weapons before combat. This overhead is tiny compared to the value delivered. Groups that run BO clear dungeons noticeably faster because the entire party''s effective health and mana pools jump by 50% or more.
Economy and Long-Term Scaling
Barbarians generate wealth through a combination of Find Item corpse rolls and direct rune drops from bossing. A Berserk Barb farming Hell Countess generates both rune drops (from Countess herself) and magic find rolls on the corpse pack. This means Barbarians profit in multiple currencies simultaneously—runes for building, uniques for trading, and runeword bases that other characters want.
Late ladder, when gear is abundant, Barbarians transition into specialized roles: BO support characters, MF robots, or PvP Smiters. The flexibility is unique. A single Barbarian can be a farming powerhouse early, a group support character mid-ladder, and a viable duelist by endgame.
Final Notes
Barbarians are often overlooked by new players who gravitate toward flashier classes (Sorceress teleport, Necromancer summons). The mistake is underestimating simplicity. Barbarians excel precisely because they lack complexity cliffs. Every piece of gear translates directly to damage. Every rune invest pays off immediately. Every skill point has clear purpose. Build a Barbarian and the learning curve teaches you how D2R actually works.
