Bone Necromancer Build Guide - D2 Resurrected
Bone Spear ignores elemental resistances and immunities entirely, hits like a truck from level one, and pairs with Bone Prison and Bone Wall for the safest crowd control in the game.
Build overview
Bone Necromancer runs on Bone Spear as its primary attack, backed by Bone Spirit for single-target burst and Bone Wall/Bone Prison for defense. Every point of damage this build deals is magic damage — no fire, cold, or lightning resistance, no immunity, ever gets in the way. That single fact is the entire pitch: while elemental casters have to skip half of Hell's monster roster, Bone Spear walks through Cold Immune Frost Nova packs and Fire Immune Blunderbores without blinking.
Pros:
- No damage type immunities anywhere in the game — every target is fair game
- Extremely cheap to gear; a corpse-cast off Spirit and a couple of + skills carries you deep into Hell
- Bone Wall and Bone Prison give you a genuinely safe playstyle, unlike glass-cannon casters
- Great synergy scaling means damage keeps climbing even after the main skill is capped
Cons:
- Bone Spear is a straight-line projectile — no splash, so clearing wide packs is slower than Blizzard or Nova
- Corpse consumption from your own Corpse Explosion competes with your Revives if you dip into summons
- Mana-hungry before you land FCR and mana-per-kill items
- Weaker against tightly bunched trash than screen-nuking sorceresses; this is a boss-and-line-clear build, not a room-wipe build
Stat allocation
- Strength: enough for your gear, typically 60-75 with a light armor setup, more if you run Homunculus or a heavier armor
- Dexterity: none required unless you want block chance with a shield; most Bone builds skip a shield entirely for a bone shield or head item
- Vitality: everything else. Necromancer has a low HP curve so vitality investment matters more here than on other casters
- Energy: none. Mana leech isn't available to a Necro, so lean on Insight (merc), Spirit's mana bonus, and a mana-per-kill small charm stack instead
Skill order 1-99
Leveling order: 1 point Teeth early for the leveling arc, then transition into Bone Spear as soon as it's affordable (level 18). Bone Armor at level 1 is mandatory and should be refreshed constantly — it's your real defense layer before Bone Wall comes online.
Endgame allocation (post-respec, ~30 hard points available beyond prerequisites):
- Bone Spear — max first, this is your main attack
- Bone Spirit — max second, your single-target boss killer with unresistable magic damage and higher per-cast output than Bone Spear
- Bone Wall / Bone Prison — 1 point each is enough for their defensive utility (both scale off Bone Armor's synergy tree in a limited way, but the raw block/wall function doesn't need more than 1 point to be useful)
- Bone Armor — max last as a synergy for Bone Spear/Spirit and as your actual damage absorption shield
- 1 point each into Amplify Damage, Teeth (synergy for nothing directly but decent early filler), Corpse Explosion, and Clay Golem for a meatshield pet
Breakpoints
Necromancer has no innate cast speed skill, so Faster Cast Rate on gear matters a lot for Bone Spear's cast animation and your Bone Armor refresh speed.
| FCR breakpoint | Frames per cast | Gear needed |
|---|
| 0% | 16 | none |
| 9% | 15 | a single FCR ring/ammy roll |
| 20% | 14 | two small FCR pieces |
| 37% | 13 | Spirit shield alone gets you close |
| 63% | 12 | Spirit + one more FCR piece |
| 105% | 11 | Spirit + Magefist + Arachnid Mesh |
| 200% | 10 | PvP-only breakpoint, unreachable in normal PvM gearing |
Faster Hit Recovery matters for a squishier caster; aim for the 86% FHR breakpoint (6 frames) with a Sigon's Shield or FHR small charms if you can't fit FCR pieces for all your FHR needs. IAS is irrelevant to this build since Bone Spear is a cast, not a weapon swing.
Gear by budget phase
Starter:
- Weapon: any +skills wand, or a Suicide Branch for the free Corpse Explosion charges
- Off-hand: any cheap +2 necro skiller shield, or nothing at all
- Armor: Leather Armor with a good rune, or cheap resist rares
- Helm: Cap or Skull Cap with sockets for a facet or a rune
- Belt/gloves/boots: whatever caps resistances cheaply — Sigon's pieces work fine
Mid:
- Weapon: Suicide Branch or a +3 necro skills wand
- Shield: Homunculus, or Spirit if you can spare a runeword's worth of runes (Tal Eth Ith Eld Eth)
- Armor: Smoke or a cheap +2 skills unique armor
- Helm: Trang-Oul's Guise for the +2 skills and poison resist, or Peasant Crown
- Belt: String of Ears; Gloves: Bone Necro small charm inventory grows here; Boots: Sander's Riprap or resist rares
Endgame:
- Weapon: Homunculus (best-in-slot head/wand slot item is actually the shield here — see below) or a Necromancer-specific "White" runeword Hand Axe (Dol Io Ith), giving a free level 22 Bone Spear proc that stacks damage
- Shield: Spirit runeword in a Monarch, for the FCR/FHR/mana boost, or a +3 necro skills unique like Homunculus for pure skill points
- Armor: Trang-Oul's Scales or a caster armor like Skin of the Vipermagi
- Helm: Trang-Oul's Guise, or Harlequin Crest (Shako) with a magic-facet jewel
- Belt: Arachnid Mesh for the extra FCR and skill point
- Gloves: Magefist; Boots: War Traveler or Gore Rider if you want the crushing blow utility on Amp Damage'd targets
- Rings: dual Stone of Jordan or a SoJ plus a rare FCR/resist ring
- Amulet: Mara's Kaleidoscope for the all-resist and all-skills, or a +3 Necromancer amulet
- Inventory: Bone Necro small charms (+skill/+mana/+life), Annihilus, Torch, Gheed's Fortune
For the biggest single power spike on a budget, look at cheap high-impact runewords — Spirit alone will carry this build from Nightmare through most of Hell.
Mercenary setup
Run an Act 2 Might mercenary in Nightmare difficulty (imported into Hell) for a physical damage aura that boosts your Golem and Skeleton allies if you dip into them, or an Act 2 Prayer/Defiance merc if you want passive survivability instead. Gear him in an Insight polearm for endless mana (which also solves your own mana problems via the aura radius), Treachery for the Fade/Venom procs and open wounds chance, and a Guillaume's Face or Andariel's Visage for extra damage and life leech since your merc is your primary meat-shield and secondary damage source in this build.
Best farming targets
- Mephisto — Bone Spear does not care that some of his room is cold-adjacent from your merc's Holy Freeze equivalent; straight lines of magic damage delete him fast, and his loot table is the best gold-to-time ratio in the game
- Pit / Ancient Tunnels — long corridors are exactly what a line-nuke wants; Bone Spear clears hallways better than almost any other skill
- Chaos Sanctuary — Diablo and the Oblivion Knights hit hard elementally, but none of that touches your magic damage; run the Chaos Sanctuary farming guide for the seal order
- Terror zones — because nothing is immune to magic damage, terror zones that would wreck a mono-element caster are all equally farmable for you; see the terror zones guide
- Countess — fast rune farming runs benefit from a build that never has to think about immunities in the tower's narrow rooms
Leveling route and respec timing
Level 1-18 as a Teeth/Bone Wall hybrid, using Clay Golem and a handful of Skeletons for early tankiness since your damage output is low before Bone Spear unlocks. At 18, dump points into Bone Spear directly — it's already strong at 1 point with a few + skills items. Continue through Nightmare on Bone Spear alone; there's no need for a respec here since the build doesn't change shape, just scales up. Pick up Bone Spirit around level 30 for boss burst once you have the hard points to spare.
If you leveled through a summon-heavy hybrid for safety (see the Summon Necromancer guide for that route), use the free Den of Evil and Radament respecs to pivot fully into Bone Spear once you clear Normal — don't wait until Hell to commit, since Bone Spear's damage scaling rewards early hard points far more than summons do at endgame.
Common mistakes
- Skipping Bone Armor upkeep. It's not a set-and-forget buff; recast it every time it breaks or you're playing without your only real damage mitigation
- Overinvesting in Bone Wall/Prison. One point each is genuinely enough — these are utility skills, not damage skills, and hard points are far better spent on Bone Spear, Bone Spirit, or the Bone Armor synergy
- Ignoring FCR entirely. Bone Spear's base cast rate is slow; even reaching the 20% breakpoint noticeably improves clear speed, and Spirit alone gets you to 37%
- Fighting in open rooms instead of corridors. This is a line-damage build — funnel monsters into hallways or doorways instead of standing in the open where Bone Spear's linear hitbox wastes most of its potential targets
- Forgetting mana management. Without a merc's Insight aura in range, Bone Spear drains fast; keep the merc close or carry a wand with Corpse Explosion charges as a mana-free backup attack between regen ticks
