Budget Mosaic Assassin Build Guide - D2 Resurrected
You do not need two Mosaic claws to run a real Martial Arts Assassin. This is the single-claw, charge-up build that clears Hell while you save for the pair.
Build overview, pros and cons
Mosaic is a runeword built into a claw (Fal Ith Ort Tal Rai) that grants a huge charm-up bonus to Martial Arts finishing moves, effectively letting a single-claw Assassin approach dual-Mosaic damage on a fraction of the budget. The Budget Mosaic build accepts one Mosaic claw plus an off-hand claw with decent charge-boosting stats, and leans on Fists of Fire or Claws of Thunder finishers rather than the more expensive dual-element setups top-end Mosaic sins run.
Pros:
- One Mosaic claw is a realistic mid-game goal — Fal, Ith, Ort, Tal, and Rai are all common-to-mid runes
- Martial Arts charge-up mechanics mean your finisher damage scales even without a second Mosaic, since the charge level (not the claw) drives most of the multiplier
- Strong Hell clear speed once charges are stacked, especially against non-physical-immune packs
- Naturally tanky with Burst of Speed and Fade running, unlike glass-cannon casters
Cons:
- Charge-up gameplay has a learning curve — you must build 10 charges with a fast jab before unleashing the finisher, or damage craters
- Single Mosaic claw means slower charge generation than the dual-claw endgame version
- Physical immunes are a real wall until you add Claws of Thunder or a Charged Bolt off-hand for elemental coverage
- IAS breakpoints for both the jab (Claws of Fire/lower attacks) and finisher moves are unforgiving on a budget weapon base
Stat allocation: strength, dexterity, vitality, energy
- Strength: enough for claws and armor, typically 80-100 with light Assassin-specific gear.
- Dexterity: enough for max block if you carry a second claw with a block bonus (Assassins get block from claws, not shields, when dual-wielding); otherwise keep it at gear requirements and dump the rest into vitality.
- Vitality: everything else. Fade and Burst of Speed give you enough evasion utility that you do not need to overinvest in dexterity for defense.
- Energy: zero. Martial Arts costs very little mana per charge-up hit, and a couple of mana-per-kill charms solve the rest.
Skill order 1-99
- Dragon Talon or Claws of Thunder/Fists of Fire — pick your finisher based on available elemental damage sources; budget Mosaic usually runs Claws of Thunder for lightning coverage against non-lightning-immune Hell packs.
- Weapon Block — very early points here dramatically reduce incoming melee damage; a cheap survivability skill often skipped by newer players.
- Burst of Speed — max for the attack speed and run/walk buff; this is what makes the charge-up jab loop feel fluid.
- Fade — max for the elemental resist and curse-length reduction; essential defensive layer for a budget build without Fortitude yet.
- Venom — a few points as a chargeup filler against physical immunes, since poison damage bypasses that immunity type.
- Shadow Warrior/Master — one point for a distraction/tank summon while you build charges safely.
- Fists of Fire synergies (Claws of Thunder, Cobra Strike) — pump these once your primary finisher and defensive skills are set, since they boost your chosen element's damage.
Breakpoints (IAS matters twice — jab and finisher)
Martial Arts Assassins care about two separate attack speed tables: the fast jab you use to build charges, and the finisher itself.
| IAS % needed | Claw class (fast) frames per attack |
|---|
| 0% | 14 |
| 15% | 13 |
| 32% | 12 |
| 48% | 11 |
| 68% | 10 |
| 99% | 9 |
| 152% | 8 |
| FHR breakpoint | % needed (light armor) |
|---|
| 1 frame | 6% |
| 2 frames | 13% |
| 3 frames | 20% |
| 4 frames | 32% |
| 5 frames | 48% |
| 7 frames (max) | 86% |
On a budget single-Mosaic build, target the 48% IAS breakpoint (11 frames) using the Mosaic claw's own bonus plus a Shael-socketed off-hand claw, and the 32% FHR breakpoint with a String of Ears belt and rare rings.
Gear by budget phase: starter, mid, endgame
Starter:
- Claws: any pair of fast-attacking rare or magic claws with +skills if affordable
- Armor: socketed rare or Duriel's Shell for resistances
- Boots/gloves/belt: Gore Rider if you can find them cheap (also useful for future Kicksin pivots), otherwise rare resist gear
Mid budget:
- Primary claw: Mosaic (Fal Ith Ort Tal Rai) — the single biggest damage spike in the build
- Off-hand claw: a Shael-socketed rare/magic claw for the IAS breakpoint, or a second cheap elemental claw if you find one
- Armor: Treachery for the Fade proc synergy and free attack speed
- Belt: String of Ears for crushing blow and damage reduction
- Amulet/rings: Rare resist pieces or a cheap Mara's Kaleidoscope if the budget stretches
Endgame stepping stone (before second Mosaic):
- Chase the second Mosaic claw once gold/runes allow — dual Mosaic dramatically increases charge generation speed and finisher output
- Upgrade armor toward Fortitude once Ist/Um runes are available
- Add a Verdungo's Hearty Cord for the extra vitality and damage reduction if crushing blow from String of Ears is not needed as much
Mercenary setup and gear
Run the Act 2 Nightmare Might or Holy Freeze mercenary depending on whether you need more damage or more crowd control while you build charges.
- Weapon: Ethereal Reaper's Toll for the decrepify proc, which is huge against tougher Hell uniques while you charge up
- Armor: Treachery again is excellent here for the free Fade uptime on the merc
- Helm: Andariel's Visage (watch poison resistance) or a cheap Guillaume's Face for the crushing blow synergy with String of Ears
Best farming targets and why
- Countess — funds your rune hunt toward the second Mosaic and eventual Fortitude armor.
- Travincal / Council — fast melee clears; the charge-up loop shines against grouped targets since you can build stacks on trash before unloading on the Council members.
- Pit / Ancient Tunnels — good density for charge generation and solid magic find odds once you slot a few MF charms.
- Chaos Sanctuary — Claws of Thunder handles most Chaos Sanctuary packs well since lightning immunity is rarer there than fire or cold; watch for Oblivion Knights' curses and use Fade.
- Cows — dense packs are excellent for charge-up practice and fast clears once your IAS breakpoint is solid.
Leveling route and respec timing
Level with a hybrid Claw Mastery/Martial Arts approach through Normal, picking up early Dragon Talon or Fists of Fire points and prioritizing Burst of Speed and Weapon Block for survivability. Full charge-up Martial Arts really comes online once you have Burst of Speed maxed and a Mosaic claw, so plan your respec for early-to-mid Nightmare once the claw is in hand — before that, damage output from an unfocused charge-up build is too weak to justify committing all your points.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
- Unleashing finishers too early — hitting your finisher before 10 charges wastes most of its damage potential. Discipline in the charge-up loop matters more than gear early on.
- Neglecting Fade — skipping this skill leaves you exposed to curses and poor resistances that a budget build cannot otherwise afford to patch with gear.
- Running only one element — physical immunes stop a pure Fists of Fire or Claws of Thunder build cold; keep a Venom or secondary element option available.
- Underrating Weapon Block — many players skip this Assassin-exclusive mitigation tool entirely; even a handful of points meaningfully reduces melee damage taken while you're mid-charge.
- Chasing the second Mosaic too aggressively — farm efficiently with the single-claw setup first; over-focusing on rune hunting at the expense of playing the build usually slows overall progress.
Once you land the second Mosaic claw, look at the full Mosaic Martial Arts Assassin guide for the dual-claw breakpoints and endgame gear list, and check assassin breakpoints for the complete IAS/FHR tables across every claw weapon class.
