Frenzy Barbarian Build Guide - D2 Resurrected
The Frenzy Barbarian trades Whirlwind's AoE spin for raw attack-speed stacking and dual-wield mayhem — a single-target melee monster that shreds bosses and packs alike once its attack speed breakpoints are locked in.
Build overview
Frenzy is the Barbarian's speed-attack skill: each hit that connects grants a stacking attack speed and damage bonus for a few seconds, up to 5 stacks. Dual-wielding fast weapons and chaining hits into a pack keeps Frenzy rolling at absurd attack speed, turning the Barbarian into the fastest-swinging melee class in the game.
Pros:
- Extremely high single-target DPS once stacks are up — arguably the best boss-killing melee output outside of Whirlwind spam.
- Dual-wield flexibility: mix elemental damage weapons, crushing blow, or open wounds across two slots.
- Cheap to get functional — a pair of fast normal/exceptional weapons with sockets carries you a long way before you need Grief.
- Great synergy with Battle Orders, Battle Command, and Shout for a durable, high-uptime melee character.
Cons:
- Stack decay means Frenzy is weakest at the start of every fight — the first hit or two are slow, so pack-clearing efficiency lags behind Whirlwind in wide-open areas.
- Requires walking/running between targets rather than spinning through a crowd, so mobility is lower than WW.
- Needs real IAS investment to hit good breakpoints on two weapons simultaneously (each weapon's speed class matters independently).
- Physical-immune monsters are a hard wall unless you carry Bash or an elemental off-weapon.
See the Barbarian class overview and Barbarian breakpoints for the full skill tree context, and compare against the flagship Whirlwind Barbarian guide if you're deciding between the two.
Stat allocation
- Strength: enough for your weapons and armor — often 200+ by endgame once dual high-strength weapons and heavy armor are factored in.
- Dexterity: enough for max block with your chosen off-hand (if you run a shield build variant) or just enough to dual-wield your weapons; pure dual-wield Frenzy usually skips a shield and dumps less into Dexterity than a WW/shield hybrid.
- Vitality: everything remaining — Barbarians want to stack life since Frenzy exposes you to melee range constantly.
- Energy: none. Barbarians run almost entirely on Battle Orders leech, potions, and a mana-per-kill charm or two.
Skill order 1-99
- Frenzy — max first; every hard point is a large damage and duration increase to your stacking window.
- Battle Orders — max second; the life/mana boost is essential for melee survivability and party support.
- Shout — max third; defense boost stacks with Battle Orders for real survivability in Hell.
- Battle Command — 1 point, buffs the level of your other Warcries.
- Iron Skin, Natural Resistance, Increased Speed — 1 point each as prerequisites/utility; Increased Speed is a nice quality-of-life pickup for run speed.
- Bash — 1 point, useful stun-lock opener and your physical-immune-adjacent backup (still physical, but the stun utility matters).
- War Cry — 1 point for stun/interrupt utility against dangerous packs.
- Masteries: Sword Mastery, Axe Mastery, or whichever weapon type you're dual-wielding — max your primary mastery, since it directly scales Frenzy's weapon damage, and add points to a secondary mastery if running mixed weapon types.
FCR / FHR / IAS breakpoints (Barbarian, Frenzy-relevant)
Frenzy's own attack speed depends on IAS from gear plus the stacking bonus, calculated per weapon class (Normal, Fast, Very Fast weapon speed base). A common practical target with two Fast-class weapons (like a Crescent Moon axe or a fast one-hand sword):
| Weapon speed class | IAS needed for 0-frame (fastest) attack | Notes |
|---|
| Very Fast (e.g. daggers, some claws) | 40% IAS | fastest achievable animation |
| Fast (e.g. many one-hand swords/axes) | 60% IAS | most common Frenzy weapon class |
| Normal (e.g. maces, larger swords) | 80-90% IAS | slower base, needs heavier IAS investment |
FHR breakpoints (shared with all melee classes):
| FHR % | Frames | Notes |
|---|
| 7% | 11 frames | cheap early floor |
| 15% | 10 frames | |
| 27% | 9 frames | comfortable Hell target |
| 48% | 8 frames | strong endgame target |
| 86% | 7 frames | best reasonably attainable |
FCR is irrelevant to a pure Frenzy build unless you're carrying Battle Command/Shout swap gear with cast-time considerations, which barbarians rarely need.
Gear by budget phase
Starter:
- Weapons: two fast normal/exceptional weapons (e.g. dual Hand Axes or Scimitars) with sockets for Jah/It's-a-joke placeholder — realistically just cheap +ED jewels or an Ed/lem-tier setup, or a leveling unique like Bloodletter
- Armor: any rare with life/resist; Stealth if you want the FCR (mostly wasted, but the resist/run speed helps)
- Helm: Rockstopper or a rare life/resist circlet
- Boots/gloves/belt: rare resist pieces, Gore Rider once affordable for crushing blow and IAS
Mid:
- Weapons: dual Bloodletters (great early open wounds and leech) transitioning to Rune Master or Islestrike-tier uniques with IAS
- Armor: Duriel's Shell or a crafted blood-type armor for FHR and resist
- Helm: Vampire Gaze for life/mana leech; or Guillaume's Face for crushing blow
- Belt: Verdungo's Hearty Cord for vitality and damage reduction
- Gloves: Gore Rider-adjacent hand gear or Bloodfist; Boots: Gore Rider
Endgame:
- Weapons: dual Grief (Eth Tir Lo Mal Ral) phase blades or similar fast base — the best-in-slot Frenzy weapon pairing, delivering massive -resist and elemental-adjacent physical damage on two hands
- Armor: Fortitude (El Sol Dol Lo) for damage and resist, or Chains of Honor
- Helm: Harlequin Crest with an added-damage facet
- Belt: Verdungo's Hearty Cord; Boots: Gore Rider for crushing blow and IAS
- Gloves: Laying of Hands or Steelrend for damage
- Rings: Raven Frost (mandatory for freeze immunity) plus a damage/resist rare
- Amulet: Highlord's Wrath for +skills, deadly strike, and resist
- Charms: strength/life small charms, Annihilus, Torch
- Switch: Call to Arms for the pre-fight buff sequence, then swap back to dual Grief
Reach 75 all resistance, hit your IAS breakpoint on both weapons, and stack open wounds/crushing blow/deadly strike — Frenzy's stacking speed makes these proc-based mods enormously effective.
Mercenary setup
Run the Act 2 Nightmare Might mercenary in Infinity (Ber Mal Ber Ist) for the party-wide Conviction that shreds monster resistances and helps break physical resist on tougher packs, or Insight if your Barbarian is mana-starved from Warcry spam. Armor: Fortitude for damage and survivability. Helm: an ethereal Guillaume's Face for crushing blow stacking with your own, or Vampire Gaze for extra leech support. Might boosts your own physical damage output directly, compounding with Frenzy's own stacking bonus.
Best farming targets
- Chaos Sanctuary — dense packs and Diablo himself, all vulnerable to Frenzy's burst once stacks are rolling; farm this for the classic runeword drop pool.
- Travincal (Council members) — three tough, dangerous uniques clustered together, ideal for a single-target melee burst class with Warcry crowd control to keep them off you.
- Pit and Ancient Tunnels — good density and no physical immunes to worry about, letting Frenzy's stacking bonus stay relevant across a full clear.
- Mephisto — fast, safe, and a strong drop table; Frenzy deletes him once you're in melee range.
- Cow Level — huge pack density is a mixed bag for Frenzy (stacks reset between kills), but with good IAS and Warcry stun-lock it's still a strong, fast farm.
Leveling route and respec timing
Level with Bash and stun-locking through Normal difficulty (levels 1-24), picking up 1 point in Frenzy as soon as it's available and swapping to it as your main attack once you have two reasonably fast weapons around level 24-30. Add Battle Orders and Shout progressively as prerequisites unlock, prioritizing weapon mastery points early since they scale your leveling weapon damage directly. There's no need for a full respec at max level — Frenzy, Bash, and the Warcries you picked up while leveling are exactly the skills the endgame build uses, so you're mostly just reallocating late points into maxing Frenzy, Battle Orders, and Shout in that priority order.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
- Ignoring weapon speed class. Two "fast" weapons of different base speed classes hit different IAS breakpoints — check both weapons' speed class individually, don't assume matching IAS numbers give matching frame results.
- Running Frenzy against physical immunes with no backup. Carry an off-weapon with elemental damage or lean on Infinity/your merc for physical-immune packs; Frenzy alone does nothing to them.
- Underestimating stack decay in open areas. Frenzy's damage output collapses if you're constantly moving between isolated monsters — this build wants moderate-to-high density, not sparse open fields; pick farming routes accordingly.
- Skipping Shout/Battle Orders investment. New Frenzy players over-invest in Frenzy alone; the defense from Shout and life from Battle Orders are what let you stand in melee range against Hell packs.
- Forgetting Raven Frost. Barbarians have no freeze-immunity skill; getting frozen mid-Frenzy-stack is a death sentence against ranged packs — Raven Frost or an equivalent cannot-be-frozen source is non-negotiable.
