Starter Trapsin Build Guide - D2 Resurrected
The Starter Trapsin clears from behind a wall of Lightning Sentries and never has to melee anything, which is exactly why it is the safest zero-gear ladder start in D2R. Full skill order, breakpoints, and a leveling route that gets you to Hell fast.
Build overview
The Starter Trapsin is the answer to "what do I play with nothing in my stash." She never trades hits in melee, her damage comes almost entirely from skill points rather than a weapon, and Lightning Sentries scale so hard off +skills that a fresh character with a couple of circlets already clears Nightmare comfortably. Compare that to a melee starter that needs a real weapon before it does anything.
Pros:
- Ranged, safe playstyle — traps do the fighting while you kite
- Gear-independent early: +skills charms and a cheap claw carry you through Normal and Nightmare
- Seamlessly upgrades into the full Lightning Trap Assassin endgame build with zero respec waste
- Shadow Warrior/Shadow Master gives you a permanent tank/decoy for free
Cons:
- Weak against Lightning Immunes until you pick up Death Sentry corpse-exploding or a second damage type
- Mana-hungry before you get Insight on the mercenary
- Trap placement has a learning curve — sentries expire and need re-laying on the move
Stat allocation
- Strength: enough for your armor and claws, typically 60-90 depending on gear. Don't overshoot.
- Dexterity: enough for a comfortable attack rating with your claw if you plan to Fire Blast trash — otherwise minimal, since sentries don't use your attack rating.
- Vitality: everything else. Trapsins are squishy melee-adjacent characters that still get walked on by aura packs, so vitality is king.
- Energy: none. Mana issues are solved by Insight on your mercenary and by leveling patience, not by base energy.
Skill order 1-99
Early levels use Fire Blast and Wake of Fire for cheap, reliable single-cast damage while you level toward the real trap tree. Once Lightning Sentry comes online it becomes your primary skill for the rest of the game.
- 1-6: Fire Blast to 5, Claw Mastery 1 (helps early attack rating while you still melee some trash)
- 6-12: Shadow Warrior 1 (free tank), Weapon Block 1, Burst of Speed 1, Fade 1
- 12-18: Wake of Fire 1, Wake of Inferno 1, continue Fire Blast toward mid tree
- 18-24: Lightning Sentry 1 as soon as it unlocks at 18, then Shock Web 1, Charged Bolt Sentry 1 (synergy)
- 24-40: Max Lightning Sentry first — this is your core damage skill and scales the hardest
- 40-60: Max Charged Bolt Sentry (synergy, adds significant damage to Lightning Sentry), then Death Sentry 1 for corpse explosion utility
- 60-80: Max Death Sentry for a secondary damage type against lightning immunes, then Shock Web to taste
- 80-99: Finish remaining points in Mind Blast (crowd control/fear), Cloak of Shadows, Fade, and Shadow Master once you can afford the level 30 requirement — Shadow Master is a straight upgrade over Shadow Warrior and worth swapping to as soon as you hit that level
One point each in Fade, Burst of Speed (or Claws of Thunder if going a hybrid), Weapon Block, Mind Blast, and Cloak of Shadows rounds out your utility kit — none of these need more than 1 point, since duration and effectiveness scale off your character level or off synergy points elsewhere.
Breakpoints
Trap Assassins care about two things: Faster Hit Recovery so you survive incidental hits while kiting, and enough claw Increased Attack Speed if you're weaving in Fire Blast on tough single targets. Trap throw speed itself is governed by your equipped weapon's WSM, not FCR — assassins have no FCR stat interaction with trap-laying.
| FHR breakpoint | Frames | % FHR needed |
|---|
| Base | 9 | 0% |
| 1st | 8 | 7% |
| 2nd | 7 | 15% |
| 3rd | 6 | 21% |
| 4th | 5 | 30% |
| 5th | 4 | 42% |
| 6th | 3 | 52% |
| 7th | 2 | 86% |
Aim for the 42% breakpoint (5 frames) as a comfortable minimum once you're geared; it's easy to hit with a rare belt, a couple of FHR-rolled rings, or Sander's gloves. Attack speed on your claw only matters if you're actively meleeing with Fire Blast/Claws of Thunder — most players ignore it entirely once traps carry the damage.
Gear by budget phase
Starter (Normal/early Nightmare):
- Weapon: any cheap claw with +skills, or Suicide Branch for the +3 Fire Skills while leveling
- Armor: Skin of the Vipermagi if you can scrape one together, otherwise any resist-all armor
- Helm: Peasant Crown or a rare circlet with +skills/resist
- Rings/amulet/boots: whatever caps resistances; cheap +1 assassin skill charms from Nightmare Countess runs
Mid (Nightmare into early Hell):
- Weapon: Spectral Shard or a claw with +3 trap skills is huge here
- Belt: Nightsmoke or a rare FHR/resist belt
- Boots: Treads of Cthon or Gore Rider once available
- Gloves: Magefist for the +1 fire skills and mana regen, or Sander's for the FHR/PDR
Endgame:
- Weapon: dual Spectral Shards or Jade Talon/Fascia's for +skills; the true best-in-slot claws come later once you're farming
- Helm: Shako or a +skills circlet
- Armor: Chains of Honor or Fortitude
- Belt/boots/gloves: whatever completes your FHR and resistances, then MF gear if you're farming for the next character
This is a starter guide, so don't over-invest — the point is to reach Hell and start funding a proper endgame Trap Assassin or Mosaic Assassin build with the runes and uniques this character finds along the way.
Mercenary setup
Run an Act 2 Might mercenary early for raw damage output while your own skills are still low-level, or a Holy Freeze merc for safety if you're finding leveling rough. Once you hit Nightmare/Hell and traps are carrying the build, switch to Holy Freeze — the slow effect keeps monsters off you while sentries chew through packs. Insight on the mercenary's polearm solves your mana problems completely and is the single best budget upgrade this build can receive.
Best farming targets and why
- Countess (Nightmare/Hell) — cheap, fast, and the best rune drop odds in the game per minute spent; ideal while you're still building the character
- Andariel — quick with Shadow Warrior tanking hits, decent gear odds
- Pits and Pit-adjacent areas — good density for Lightning Sentry's screen-clearing pulse damage
- Travincal — council packs die fast to layered Lightning Sentries and it's a short, repeatable run
- Once geared, graduate to Chaos Sanctuary and Baal runs alongside a proper endgame trapper setup
Leveling route and respec timing
Level through Normal doing quests and Countess runs for skillers, using Fire Blast/Wake of Fire on packs since Lightning Sentry isn't available until 18. Push into Nightmare around clvl 24-30 once Lightning Sentry and Charged Bolt Sentry are both usable — this is where the build starts to feel like its final form. No respec is needed for this build since the skill order above walks straight into the endgame Trap Assassin skill spread; you're simply adding points, not undoing choices. Consider the best ladder start classes writeup if you're deciding between this and other starters.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
- Laying traps too far from packs. Sentries have limited range and a duration timer — walk in closer than feels safe and let Shadow Warrior eat the first hits.
- Forgetting Charged Bolt Sentry. It's a pure synergy with zero standalone use, and skipping it undersells your Lightning Sentry damage by a wide margin.
- Going heavy Dexterity for a claw you'll stop using. Traps don't care about your attack rating; don't waste points chasing melee stats you'll abandon at Hell.
- Skipping Insight on the merc. Without it you'll be town-portaling for blue potions every other pack — it's the cheapest quality-of-life fix in the build.
- Delaying the Shadow Master swap. Shadow Warrior is fine early, but Shadow Master's extra survivability and damage make the level 30 breakpoint worth respeccing a single point into immediately when you hit it.
