Secret Cow Level: How to Open & Farm It
The Secret Cow Level is an unlimited resource of runes, bases, and charms. Learn the Wirt's Leg opener, optimal cow-clearing strategies, and why Cows never stops being valuable.
The Secret Cow Level is one of D2R's most reliable farming zones. Once you open it, cows spawn infinitely, flooding the level with runes, bases, and charms on every run. Unlike other boss arenas, you can reset Cow Level with the same character indefinitely, making it the backbone of mid-to-endgame farming.
Opening cows: Wirt's Leg recipe
Access requires two items: Wirt's Leg (a unique small shield, drops from Andariel or the Cow King) and a Tome of Town Portal. Leg in inventory, tome in any slot; open the waypoint to the Rogue Encampment, click the red portal on the north edge of the map, and the Secret Cow Level opens.
Keep several Wirt's Legs in shared stash; they are cheaper than the time cost of resetting characters. A small stash of town portal tomes accelerates your opening ritual.
Cow drops: runes, bases, sockets galore
Cows are the elite treasure class, dropping:
- Runes: Mid-to-high runes (Fal through Ber) appear regularly; especially valuable for runeword bases.
- Bases: 4-socket and 5-socket bases drop frequently, making Cows a prime source for runeword construction.
- Charms: Skillers, small charms, large charms; not guaranteed rolls, but volume is high.
- Uniques and Sets: Lower drop rate than some zones, but consistent enough to reward extended runs.
Density is the killer: in a single level, you face 50+ cows in each half. Clear them methodically and the loot accumulates fast. No immunity issues; no fire, cold, or lightning immunities exist among cows.

Javazon and Whirlwind Barb dominate because cows cluster tightly. Pierce removes the need to reposition for every kill, and Whirlwind aoe clears entire herds. Blizzard Sorceress is safer if you're paranoid; Cows hit hard but have no special gimmicks.
Density strategy and herding
Cow Level is a sea of minions. Use natural terrain to your advantage: pull cows into choke points, wall yourself off, and clear in waves rather than engaging the full pack. Javazon players should herd cows together for maximum pierce overlap. Whirlwind Barbs should stand in the center of a pack and spin.
Long runs accumulate inventory fast. Do not waste clicks on every white charm or cracked gem; pick up runes, bases, and quality charms. Take a second to sort after each wave if you fill up.
Cow King in D2R: no more lockout
In legacy Diablo 2, killing the Cow King locked that level permanently. D2R removed this mechanic: kill him without penalty. He drops slightly better loot than regular cows but holds no special gating power. You can farm his corpse forever.
