8-Man D2R Team Roles Explained: Which Slot Fits You?
What each slot in the Taxi Strat 3.0 8-man comp does: Tele Sorc, Limo Sorc, three Paladins, Barbarian, Druid and Cold Sorc. Credit to jymnasium and the 8Man Speedrunners, plus advice on which slot fits you.
A D2R 8-man team needs eight jobs filled: two Sorceresses who teleport, scout and drop portals, three Paladins who each carry a different aura, a Barbarian who keeps Battle Orders and potions ready, a Druid who runs side routes, and a Cold Sorceress who finishes the big fights. Here is what each slot does and who should play it.
The roles come from Taxi Strat 3.0, created by jymnasium (twitch.tv/jymnasium) with the help of the 8Man Speedrunners. Fastest known time for this comp on D2R: SC 1:20:14 | HC 1:32:26. We read the roles out of the plan's task matrix and skill builds, not from our own runs, and it is a speedrun plan, so a relaxed team can bend it. Our rosters hold 8 active players and 4 bench players, and the whole plan is on the compositions and strategies pages. The format itself is covered in the Reign of the Warlock ruleset overview.

The Teleporters: Tele Sorc and Limo Sorc
The plan plays Normal as six games built around repeated Countess runs, then switches to the taxi in Nightmare and Hell. The Tele Sorc teleports ahead and drops XP portals next to boss groups, and the other seven hop in so the whole team harvests experience at maximum density. Eight players in one game is the whole point: monsters get tougher but pay out more, which our player count mechanics article explains. The Limo Sorc runs outside to find boss groups for that harvest team, drops the staff at town portals, and takes side jobs such as the Act 5 barbarian rescue. Those side jobs are the reason to carry a second teleporter.
Play the Tele Sorc if you know the maps cold and are comfortable being the person everybody waits on. The plan also tells it not to level past 40 in Nightmare, so the team's experience goes to the players who need it. That makes it a discipline slot as much as a skill slot. The Limo Sorc fits a player who likes scouting and does not need the spotlight. If you are new, start in a Paladin slot and move up later, because a Tele Sorc who drops portals in the wrong place costs seven other people time.
The Three Paladins
All three Paladin slots share the same early shape, with Holy Bolt carrying the low levels, and all three respec after Diablo dies in Act 4 Normal into Blessed Hammer plus an aura. The plan's wording is to go to Act 1, click respec, and rebuild skills and stats in Act 5. The auras are what differ. The Salvation Pally adds Salvation from around level 30, the Conviction Pally adds Conviction, and the Conc Pally maxes Concentration by level 37. The Conc Pally also runs Countess in the opening games and solos Radament, while the Conviction Pally leaves portals at Tristram and in the Pit for the Tele Sorc.
Our read: the Paladin slots are the most forgiving for a player learning a plan, because most of the session is following XP portals and swinging hammers. The one trap is the respec. Skip it and you arrive in Hell with a Holy Bolt build.
Barbarian, Druid and Cold Sorc
The BO Barb is the logistics slot. The plan has the Barbarian keep potions and Battle Orders at the portals, shop for the team (20 FCR wands and a Lower Resist wand are on its list), build the Tele Sorc's Ancient's Pledge shield in Game 6, and stop leveling at 43, which is max Battle Orders. It is the least glamorous job and one of the first anyone misses when it goes wrong. Pick it if you like keeping a team running.
Druid duty is flexible fighting. The Shockwave Druid takes the first XP portal and copies it for the others, solos the Halls of the Dead in Act 2, spreads out to find Izual, and repeats the Shenk and barbarian rescue so everyone else gets an Ancient's Pledge. The Cold Sorc is the closer: in Hell Act 5 it leads the Throne, and after Baal's minions die everyone leaves except the Cold Sorc, who spawns Baal on P1 (the Players 1 setting) while the rest rejoin to leech the quest.
Which Slot Fits You?
Pick by temperament first, then by experience:
- You like owning the route: Tele Sorc, after a few practice runs.
- You like scouting and side jobs: Limo Sorc or Shockwave Druid.
- You want a calm first run: any Paladin slot.
- You like keeping people supplied: BO Barb.
- You want the last hit on Baal: Cold Sorc.
With fewer than eight players, keep the jobs and drop the slots. Someone still has to scout, someone still has to buff, and someone still has to close. The plan's experience and its times assume a full game, so copy the structure, not the clock. If you are still choosing between solo, small group and full roster, choosing a ladder reset strategy comes first. When you apply to a team, name the slot you want in your Ladder Setup notes and in your message to the captain, or build the roster yourself with how to start your own D2R team for Season 16.
FAQ
How many players do you need for an 8-man D2R team?
Eight in the game at once, which is also the most a D2R game holds. On our site a roster has 8 active spots and 4 bench spots, so a team can carry substitutes for nights when people cannot make it.
What is a taxi in D2R?
A taxi is a character who teleports ahead and opens town portals next to boss groups, so the rest of the party can step in and kill them. In Taxi Strat 3.0 that is the Tele Sorc's job from Nightmare onward, with the Limo Sorc scouting boss groups for the harvest team.
Can I run this comp with fewer than eight players?
You can borrow the structure but not the times. The plan assumes a full game's experience and eight specific jobs, so with fewer players someone doubles up and the speedrun times stop applying. Our Taxi Strat 3.0 walkthrough goes through the plan phase by phase.
