Diablo Clone: Spawning & Killing DClone
Diablo Clone is the only source of the Annihilus charm. Learn how to spawn him, which regions spawn him first, how to prevent him from escaping, and the gear you need to guarantee the kill.
Who DClone is and why he exists
Diablo Clone (DClone) is a special version of the unique monster Super Unique Diablo that spawns on the Worldstone Keep map in Act 4, Hell difficulty. He is not guaranteed to be there — he only spawns when specific conditions are met. He appears for one reason: to drop the Annihilus small charm, which gives +2 to all skills, 1-40 all resistances, and 1-40 experience gain. This charm is the single biggest power spike in the game for any caster.
DClone is an optional boss, but in the D2R economy, every active ladder season has dozens of DClone hunts running simultaneously. The global community coordinates hunts, posts Anni prices, and builds gear specifically to kill him.
SoJ sales: the spawn mechanic in D2R
Unlike original Diablo 2, D2R uses a direct spawn mechanic: selling Stones of Jordan (SoJs) to vendors across Battle.net regions triggers DClone. This is the core economy driver that makes Annihilus valuable and makes DClone hunts a real activity.
The mechanic: Each region (US East, US West, Europe, Asia-Pacific) tracks total SoJ sales across all games on that realm in the past 10 minutes. When sales reach a threshold (approximately 75-150 SoJs, varying by region and patch), DClone spawns on the Worldstone Keep map in the next newly created game on that realm.
What this means: If you want to hunt DClone, you need to know when your region is "hot" — i.e., when SoJ sales are high and DClone is spawning frequently. Discord communities like the D2Hustlers tracking channels post when regions go hot so hunters can coordinate.
The counter-economy: Players who have Annihilus or do not care about Anni can sit on SoJs, limiting supply to vendors and preventing spawns. This creates scarcity. Mid-ladder, an Anni costs 1-3 high runes. Late ladder, when most players have one, Anni prices crater and spawn hunts dry up.
Tracking spawns and joining hunts
D2R regional spawn tracking is a public resource. Discord servers, fan sites, and in-game callouts all track when regions spawn DClone.
Finding hunts:
- D2Hustlers Discord: We track US East, US West, and EU spawns and post when hunts are active.
- In-game: Create a game called "DClone hunt US East" or check existing games for callouts.
- Reddits and fan sites: r/diablo2 and ladder-community wikis post spawn times and hot regions.
Preparation for a hunt:
- Grab your Smiter or bowazon build with survivability gear (not pure damage).
- Bring one super-strong melee character if you have one; otherwise a basic Hell-viable character works.
- Have your Teleport ready (Enigma or Sorceress) because you need to reach the Worldstone Keep fast once you spawn in.
- Ally with 1-3 other players in the hunt game. DClone dies faster with a group, and you only need to land one hit to get credit for the drop.
Kill tactics: prevent monster heal matters
DClone is not harder than Diablo (Super Unique), but he hits hard and his lightning damage can two-shot characters without decent lightning resistance. The fight is about positioning and preventing him from healing.
The key mechanic: Diablo/DClone has a heal aura that regenerates him and restores life to nearby monsters. If you kill his minions too slowly or let him stand in one spot, he heals faster than you damage him and the fight becomes endless.
Tactics:
Kill the pack first: DClone spawns with a pack of super-unique demons (Oblivion Knights, Pit Lords, etc.). Kill these before focusing DClone because they tank damage and enable his heal. A group of 3+ can burn the pack in 30 seconds.
Prevent stacking: Do not let DClone and his pack stand in the same spot. Drag DClone away from his minions so their heal does not extend to him. Melee characters should circle and attack from behind.
Life tap or lifesteal: If you are a melee character, life tap or lifesteal is crucial. DClone's damage is high enough that you need sustain. A Smiter with a decent life tap chance and + physical damage can solo him if you are patient.
Resist lightning: DClone deals lightning damage. Have 75%+ lightning resistance. Treachery armor, Duriel's Shell, or a decent resist ring makes the difference between two-shots and survivability.
Use crowd control: Slows, Decrepify (Necro curse), and Conviction (Paladin) make the fight easier. If you have an Enigma sorceress in the group, she Teleports away when DClone attacks and keeps him spread out.
Solo DClone: Possible, but takes 30-60 seconds with a Smiter or 5+ minutes with a caster. Group kills are 5-10 seconds total. Faster speed means higher hunt participation and better Anni odds.
The Annihilus reward
DClone only drops two things: an Annihilus charm and a unique jewelry piece (rare). The Anni is always included in the drop.
Anni stat ranges: The Anni drops with random stats on three properties: skills (always +2), all resistances (1-40), and experience gain (1-40). A "perfect" Anni is +2/+40/+40. A "bad" Anni is +2/+1/+1.
Pricing: Early ladder, Anni trades for 1-2 high runes (Ber, Jah). Mid-ladder, it is 1 high rune or 10-15 mid runes. Late ladder, when everyone has one, it is vendor trash. Plan accordingly.
Value of hunting: On a ladder, if you join even one successful DClone hunt early, you land Anni before most players and have a huge power advantage. If you are running Hammerdins, Smiters, Lightning Sorcs, or any build that scales with +skills, Anni is not optional — it is mandatory.
Alternative paths to Anni
Only DClone drops Annihilus. There is no substitute and no other way to get it except buying one on the market. You either hunt DClone, trade for Anni, or do without.
