Kicksin (Dragon Talon) Build Guide - D2 Resurrected
Dragon Talon Kicksin turns the Assassin's kick tree into a crushing-blow machine: five hits per activation, Gore Rider synergy, and a uber-capable niche most melee builds cannot touch.
Overview: pros and cons
The Kicksin builds around Dragon Talon, the Assassin's kick finisher that fires off a burst of up to five separate kick attacks per activation once you're at max charge-up level. Each of those five hits rolls its own attack, its own crushing blow chance, and its own elemental proc chance independently, which makes crushing blow absurdly effective compared to a single-swing melee attack rolling CB once per swing.
Pros:
- Five attack rolls per Dragon Talon activation stacks crushing blow (up to 100% with Gore Rider) into near-guaranteed instant 25%-then-25%-then-25% health drops on anything not immune to it, including many uber-tier health pools.
- Fast, mobile, weapon-slot flexible — you can dual-wield claws for Fists of Fire / Venom procs or go pure kick with a shield for survivability.
- Genuinely useful in cooperative Uber Tristram runs because crushing blow ignores physical resistance entirely and scales off current HP, letting a Kicksin chew through Diablo Clone's inflated health pool alongside a Hammerdin or Smiter.
- Cheap relative to top-tier casters — Gore Rider boots and a decent claw setup get you functional; you don't need a fully corrupted-crafted endgame kit to feel the build working.
Cons:
- Weak against physical immunes and against bosses/uniques immune to crushing blow (a real and growing list in Hell), where you fall back on plain kick damage, which is mediocre.
- Melee range means you eat auras, curses and Reflect Damage packs directly; no Enigma teleport safety net unless you buy one.
- Attack rating can be shaky without Burst of Speed synergy investment and good IAS gearing — misses feel bad since Dragon Talon's value depends on landing all five hits.
- Mercenary and support gear compete with the same slots a Trapsin would use more efficiently, so this is a build for players who want the kick fantasy specifically, not the most efficient farmer in the class.
Stat allocation
- Strength: enough for Gore Rider (that's usually the highest requirement, 103 base) and your armor/claws. Around 90-115 covers most kits.
- Dexterity: enough for max block if you're carrying a shield (rare on this build, since dual claws is more common), otherwise put the rest here for attack rating — Dexterity also boosts your kick damage indirectly through attack rating, not damage, so don't over-invest past what your AR needs.
- Vitality: everything left over. This is a melee build standing in monster faces; life matters more than raw damage.
- Energy: none. You don't have a large mana pool of active spells to sustain — Dragon Talon and Burst of Speed cost mana per use but a modest mana pool with a couple of mana charms covers it.
Skill order 1-99
Leveling priority (respec into this once you're geared, level in Martial Arts from the start if you want a smooth arc, or level as a Trapsin hybrid and switch later):
- Dragon Talon (1 point at 30, the kick tree requires level 30) — max first once available, since it's your entire damage output.
- Burst of Speed — max second. It's a synergy for Dragon Talon (+kick damage per hard point) and also grants +attack speed/+run-walk, both of which matter enormously for landing the multi-hit finisher.
- Fade — 1 point minimum for the resistance and curse-length reduction; max later if points allow, since Fade also synergizes nothing directly but keeps you alive.
- Weapon Block (claw-mastery tree) — 1 point if dual-wielding claws, useful passive damage mitigation.
- Claw Mastery / Weapon Block — a point or two for attack rating and crit chance if using claws.
- Dragon Flight — optional 1 point for repositioning/gap close; some Kicksins skip it entirely in favor of more Dragon Talon-adjacent points, but it's handy for uber positioning.
- Fill remaining points into Shadow Warrior/Shadow Master (1 point minimum for a permanent decoy/tank, more if you want a real pet) and Mind Blast for crowd control/stun-locking packs.
Cap Dragon Talon and Burst of Speed at 20 hard points each as your priority; everything else is flex based on whether you want more survivability (Fade, Weapon Block) or more utility (Shadow Master, Mind Blast, Dragon Flight).
IAS breakpoints (Dragon Talon uses the kick weapon speed table)
Kick attacks use your equipped weapon class's speed but Dragon Talon has its own base speed modifiers. With claws equipped (most common Kicksin setup) target these IAS breakpoints for Claw attack speed with Burst of Speed active:
| Weapon Attack Speed (WSM) | IAS needed for next frame breakpoint |
|---|
| 0 (normal claws) | 9% IAS → 8 frames |
| 0 | 32% IAS → 7 frames |
| 0 | 68% IAS → 6 frames |
| 0 | 125% IAS → 5 frames |
Burst of Speed grants a flat +40% IAS-equivalent bonus baked into the skill itself at high levels, so most Kicksins hit the 6-frame breakpoint from gear alone (Gore Rider boots contribute 40% IAS, and a fast claw pair pushes you the rest of the way).
FHR breakpoints (all classes share the same table)
| FHR% needed | Frames |
|---|
| 6% | 12 |
| 13% | 11 |
| 20% | 10 |
| 32% | 9 |
| 52% | 8 |
| 86% | 7 |
| 174% | 6 |
Aim for the 9 or 10 frame breakpoint minimum; melee builds standing in packs want fast hit recovery.
Gear by budget phase
Starter:
- Weapon: any fast claw pair, ideally with +Kick Damage or ED% mods — Jade Talon or a rare pair with IAS
- Boots: any resist boots until Gore Rider drops
- Armor: whatever gives resistances; a rare or magic light armor
- Helm: rare with life/resist, or Tarnhelm for early MF
- Shield/off-claw: a second claw for dual-wield, or a small shield for block
Mid:
- Boots: Gore Rider (unique War Boots) — this is the single most important item in the entire build. It grants Crushing Blow, Open Wounds, +Attack Rating and +Kick Damage, and no other boot comes close for this build.
- Weapon: dual Fury runeword claws (Jah+Ith+Ber, pricier) for open wounds and deadly strike, or budget Spectral Shard for pure speed and mana
- Armor: Duriel's Shell for cold immunity and huge defense, or a cheap Smoke for resist/stealth utility
- Belt: Razortail (unique) if available for crushing blow and IAS, otherwise a rare resist belt
- Amulet/rings: rare life/resist pieces, or a Raven Frost for CBF (cannot-be-frozen) and AR
Endgame:
- Boots: Gore Rider stays best-in-slot
- Weapon: Fury in a Phase Blade or Eth Katar for maximum open wounds proc chance and speed, or Fists of Fire/Jade Talon claw combo for elemental hybrid damage
- Armor: Fortitude for the ED%/resist/cast rate combo, or Chains of Honor for the +200% damage to demons/undead and resist package
- Belt: Razortail or Verdungo's Hearty Cord for the vitality/damage reduction if you're facing uber content
- Helm: Jalal's Mane (unique circlet) for its native +2 Martial Arts, Venom on kick, and mana synergy — a strong assassin-specific pickup
- Charms: kick-damage-affix small charms, Gheed's, life charms, an Annihilus and Torch once affordable
Mercenary setup
Run the Act 2 Nightmare Might mercenary in Infinity for the -res aura if you're farming in a group or want to break physical/elemental resist walls for whatever else is in the party, or run Act 2 Desert Wolf/Combat mercenary with Reaper's Toll for the Open Wounds/decrepify proc, which stacks brutally well with your own crushing blow and open wounds output — decrepify halves enemy physical resistance too, making your kicks hit dramatically harder. Gear the merc in Fortitude or Treachery for armor, and a Vampire Gaze or Guillaume's Face helm for life leech to keep him alive at melee range next to you.
Best farming targets and why
- Uber Tristram (with a group) — crushing blow from five independent Dragon Talon hits is one of the best physical DPS answers to Diablo Clone's massive health pool; pair with a Hammerdin/Smiter group for a fast, reliable kill.
- Chaos Sanctuary — Diablo and the Oblivion Knights die fast to crushing blow, and Seal bosses have huge health pools that crushing blow trivializes.
- Travincal — the Council members are a tight physical-damage pack; crushing blow shreds their large HP pools quickly, and it's a fast, repeatable run.
- Pit / Pindleskin — solid single-target crushing blow targets for quick rune and unique farming between uber sessions.
- Avoid Act 5 Ancients and any heavily physical-immune terror zone without a sunder charm — Dragon Talon's base damage alone is unremarkable.
Leveling route and respec timing
Level through Normal and Nightmare using Claws of Thunder or a hybrid trap/kick approach if you have Martial Arts points early — trap synergies aren't shared with kick synergies, so pure kick levelers often lean on Tiger Strike/Claws of Thunder combos for AoE clearing power since Dragon Talon doesn't unlock until level 30 and only shines once Burst of Speed is invested. Once you hit level 30 and have picked up a Gore Rider or at least a fast claw pair, respec with Akara's free respec (Normal difficulty) or a Token of Absolution into the full Dragon Talon/Burst of Speed spec. Don't commit fully before you have Gore Rider in hand — the build's identity depends on that item, and running Dragon Talon without crushing blow gear is genuinely weak damage.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
- Skipping Burst of Speed investment. Players max Dragon Talon and dump the rest into pets, leaving attack speed too slow to land all five hits reliably. Burst of Speed is a hard synergy — invest in it.
- Fighting crushing-blow-immune uniques the same way. Many Act bosses and superuniques are immune to crushing blow; check before committing your Dragon Talon charges, and fall back on your merc's Reaper's Toll decrepify or swap to a Fury-based dual-claw damage rotation instead.
- No cannot-be-frozen item. Melee characters standing next to cold-attack packs without a Raven Frost or CBF charm get chain-frozen and die. This is non-negotiable gear.
- Neglecting resistances for pure offense. A Kicksin without capped resistances gets one-shot by elemental packs in Hell; prioritize Fortitude, Chains of Honor or a solid resist rare set over squeezing out extra kick damage.
- Using slow off-hand claws. Your off-hand claw's speed still matters for some kick animation calculations and normal attacks between Dragon Talon cooldowns; pair two fast claws, not a slow one paired with a fast one.
