PvP Whirlwind Assassin Build Guide - D2 Resurrected
The PvP Whirlwind Assassin trades trap utility for raw melee pressure, using dual Chaos claws and namelock Whirlwind to close distance and burst opponents down before they can react. Full stats, breakpoints, gear and duel theory inside.
Build Overview
The Whirlwind Assassin is a melee PvP archetype that borrows Barbarian's signature skill through the Chaos runeword's charges, then layers Assassin martial arts synergies, Fade, and Mind Blast on top for survivability and crowd control. Where Hammerdins and Bone Necros fight at range, the WW Sin's entire game plan is closing the gap and staying attached to a target through Whirlwind's namelock mechanic — the skill locks onto the nearest enemy hero and keeps swinging as you move toward them, which is brutally effective against squishy casters who whiff their first defensive skill.
Pros:
- Extremely high burst damage per Whirlwind pass with dual claws and Venom/Burst of Speed synergy
- Namelock movement makes her hard to kite for slower classes
- Fade grants strong magic resistance and curse resistance, countering Amp Damage and Life Tap
- Cheap-ish core (one Chaos runeword) compared to top-end caster PvP sets
Cons:
- No ranged option — she loses badly to well-played kiters who keep distance and CC her
- Squishy compared to Barbarians; relies entirely on Fade and Burst of Speed uptime for survival
- Whirlwind's namelock can path her into traps, walls of fire, or a second enemy
- Weak against tanky Paladins with high defense and Holy Shield block

Stat Allocation
- Strength: enough for dual Chaos claws (67 base str for Runic Talons, adjust for +str gear) — usually 80-95 with rings/charms covering the rest.
- Dexterity: enough for max block with your chosen shield-less claw setup, or push toward 75% attack rating if you skip block entirely. Most PvP builds run pure dex-for-AR since claws are dual-wielded and there's no shield slot for block.
- Vitality: everything remaining. PvP demands a big life pool — aim for 700+ unbuffed life before considering more dex.
- Energy: none. Mana comes from Burst of Speed's Fade synergy and mana-after-kill charms.
Skill Order 1-99
Priority allocation:
- Whirlwind (Barb charges via Chaos) — no points needed, it's a charge-based skill, not a martial arts finisher.
- Venom — max first. Adds poison damage over time that stacks with every hit and bypasses physical resistance, critical against high-defense PvP targets.
- Burst of Speed — max second. Attack speed and run/walk synergy keeps you attached to targets.
- Fade — max third. Elemental/magic resist and curse-length reduction; this is your main survival tool against casters.
- Weapon Block — a few points for extra survivability if you have spare points.
- Claw Mastery — one point minimum, more if you want the attack rating and crit synergy.
- Prerequisite martial arts points (Tiger Strike, Claws of Thunder, etc.) as needed to path to Venom and Burst of Speed — one point each is enough since you aren't finishing charge-up attacks.
Breakpoint Table (Attack Speed / Fast Cast)
The Assassin's IAS thresholds for Claws with a fast weapon speed base (like Runic Talons, WSM -20):
| IAS Needed | Frames per Attack | Notes |
|---|
| 0% | 9 | Base claw speed |
| 20% | 8 | Cheap early breakpoint |
| 37% | 7 | Common mid-gear breakpoint |
| 68% | 6 | Target for endgame duel gear |
| 152% | 5 | Very hard to reach, rarely worth chasing |
Faster Hit Recovery (FHR) breakpoints for a light Assassin (base 2-frame class):
| FHR% | Frames |
|---|
| 0% | 9 |
| 15% | 8 |
| 33% | 7 |
| 52% | 6 |
| 86% | 5 |
| 174% | 4 |
Aim for at least the 52% FHR breakpoint (6 frames) in duel gear — getting stun-locked by a Hammerdin or Zealot means you never get to Whirlwind at all.
Gear by Budget Phase
Starter:
- Weapons: dual Runic Talons or Runic Blade class claws, whatever gives the fastest weapon speed you can find
- Armor: Skin of the Vipermagi or a cheap rare with resistances
- Boots/gloves/belt: Gore Riders if affordable, otherwise rare life/resist pieces
- Charms: small life charms and any +skills grand charms you can scrounge
Mid:
- Chaos runeword in a Fanged Knife or similar claw base once you have Fal, Ohm, Um
- Second claw: an Astreon's Iron Ward for +2 assassin skills and Fade bonus, or a rare AR/life claw
- Armor: upgrade to Duriel's Shell or a Fortitude if runes allow
- Rings: dual Raven Frost for cannot-be-frozen and crit strike
Endgame:
- Chaos runeword claw (main), Astreon's Iron Ward or a second Chaos claw (offhand)
- Armor: Fortitude for the resist-all and enhanced damage, or Shaftstop for crushing blow reduction
- Helm: Jalal's Mane for demon damage or a rare +skills, +life, resist circlet
- Belt: Verdungo's Hearty Cord for vitality and life
- Boots: Gore Rider for crushing blow and speed
- Rings: dual Raven Frost or one Raven Frost + a rare AR/life/resist ring
- Amulet: Highlord's Wrath for deadly strike and +skills, or a rare

Mercenary Setup
For pure PvP dueling, mercenaries are usually disabled by mutual agreement, but if allowed:
- Act 2 Might mercenary in Treachery armor (adds Fade and Venom charges) with a fast polearm for extra damage output
- Alternatively, an Act 5 Barbarian mercenary with a Bramble or Fortitude for a tanky offensive body block
Best Farming Targets (Gearing Up for Duels)
- Chaos Sanctuary / Diablo — the fastest route to Chaos runeword materials and general endgame drops
- Pit / Ancient Tunnels — reliable rune and rare claw drops for early upgrades
- Countess — cheap low/mid rune farming for Chaos ingredients; see the Countess rune farming guide for the run pattern
- Andariel/Mephisto — solid ring, amulet and charm odds for the accessory slots this build leans on heavily
Leveling Route and Respec Timing
Level as a Martial Arts hybrid using Fire Blast or Charged Bolt Sentry early (borrow the Trapsin starter guide route) since Whirlwind literally requires the Chaos runeword to function — you cannot practice the PvP kit until that item exists. Once Chaos is built (usually mid-to-late Nightmare or early Hell on a self-found budget), take a full respec into the Venom/Burst of Speed/Fade allocation above. Don't respec before you actually have the claw — you'll be stuck with a half-built kit and no way to attack effectively in the meantime.
Common Mistakes and How to Fix Them
- Skipping Weapon Block or Fade entirely. Even a handful of points in each dramatically improves survival time in a duel; a WW Sin with zero defensive investment dies to a single Hammer volley.
- Not reaching the 6-frame FHR breakpoint. Getting locked in hit-recovery against fast-casting enemies means you never get a Whirlwind off. Prioritize FHR gear over pure damage until you hit 52%.
- Whirlwinding into obstacles or traps. Namelock pathing can walk you straight through a Bone Prison cage wall or a patch of fire; watch your positioning before committing.
- Underestimating claw IAS breakpoints. A slow claw base wastes the whole point of dual-wielding; always check your actual frame count in a tool like the arreat summit calculator rather than assuming more % IAS is always better past a breakpoint.
- Forgetting Venom is a DoT, not instant. Don't panic-recast Whirlwind repeatedly hoping for burst — let poison ticks compound while you reposition or defend.
Dueling is a live-fire skill on top of a gear check — practice the namelock movement in Hell difficulty against monster packs before jumping into ranked PvP games.
