Diablo 5 Itemization: Runewords, Sets and Stat Requirements
Blizzard says Diablo 5 itemization is inspired by Diablo II. Stat requirements, inventory size, sets, Runes and Runewords explained for Diablo 4 players with real Diablo II: Resurrected examples, plus how to try them in Season 16.
Diablo 5 itemization is inspired by Diablo II, according to Blizzard: gear may carry stat requirements, bigger items take more inventory space, sets are built from gear pieces, and crafting includes Diablo II-style Runes and Runewords. This guide explains each idea for Diablo IV players who never played Diablo II, using real examples from the D2 Hustlers database. The official name is Diablo V, and everything about Blizzard's plans is as of November 2026.
What Did Blizzard Say About Diablo 5 Items?
Blizzard's Diablo V panel post makes these points:
- Itemization is inspired by Diablo II.
- Blizzard is "experimenting with stat requirements on gear," and has not decided.
- Larger items take up more inventory space again.
- Gear-based sets return.
- Crafting is inspired by the approach in Diablo IV: Lord of Hatred, with Diablo II-style Runes and Runewords.
- The goal is items that are readable, memorable and worth chasing for hundreds of hours.
Blizzard describes these as design directions. The rest of this guide shows what each one means in Diablo II, and the wider picture is in Diablo 5 Release Date and Everything We Know So Far.
What Are Stat Requirements on Gear?
In Diablo II, armor and weapons list a minimum Strength, sometimes a minimum Dexterity, and a level. If the character falls short, the item cannot be equipped. Every level grants 5 stat points to spend on Strength, Dexterity, Vitality and Energy, so gear quietly shapes the build: points spent on Strength to wear heavy armor are points not spent on Vitality.
The numbers in this site's item database show the range:
Heavier bases give more defense, so the requirement is the price of a better chest piece. Some items bend the rule: Tal Rasha's Guardianship, a set armor built on a Lacquered Plate (208 Strength), carries Requirements -60%. Other bonuses feed the requirements of different gear, such as Enigma, which adds Strength that grows with character level (+0.75 per level, about 74 at level 99).
Why Does Inventory Size Matter?
Every Diablo II item takes up a rectangle on a grid, and the backpack in Diablo II: Resurrected is 10 squares wide and 4 tall, 40 squares in all. A ring or amulet takes 1 square, a small charm 1, a grand charm 3 and body armor 6. Charms show the trade-off best, because they only work while they sit in the inventory. Each charm that adds life or resistances occupies a square that cannot hold loot. The small charms guide shows how players budget that space.
Blizzard says larger items take up more inventory space again, and Diablo II is the clearest preview: carrying power competes with carrying loot.
How Do Gear Sets Work?
A set is a group of named items that share a set name. Each piece has its own stats, and wearing more pieces switches on bonuses. Tal Rasha's Wrappings is the classic example, with five pieces: a belt, an amulet, an orb, body armor and a helm. This site's database lists the bonuses like this:
| Pieces worn | Bonus |
|---|
| 2 | Replenish Life +10 |
| 3 | 65% Better Chance of Getting Magic Items |
| 4 | +25% Faster Hit Recovery |
| All 5 | All Resistances +50, +3 To Sorceress Skill Levels, +150 Defense, +150 To Life, +50 Defense vs. Missile |
The price is that a set locks several slots into one outfit, so the full bonus has to beat the best separate item in each slot. Civerb's Vestments is a small three-piece set for early levels, and the Tal Rasha's set guide goes deeper on the big one. Blizzard has not named any Diablo V sets, only said that gear-based sets return.
What Are Runes and Runewords?
Runes are items, 33 in all, from El at the bottom to Zod at the top. Socketed alone, a rune gives an effect that depends on what it sits in. The Tal Rune adds 75 poison damage over 5 seconds in a weapon, Poison Resist +30% in armor, and Poison Resist +35% in a shield.
A runeword is a recipe. Put the right runes into a socketed item, in the exact order, on a base type the recipe allows, and the item becomes a named runeword with its own fixed list of stats, which replaces the runes' individual effects. Get one condition wrong and the runes just stay separate: the conditions are base type, socket count (exactly as many sockets as runes) and rune order. The base must also be non-magic, meaning a white or grey item (superior and ethereal bases count), and How Runewords Work covers the rules.
Four Real Runeword Examples From the Database
Spirit (Tal, Thul, Ort, Amn; 4 sockets; sword or shield; level 25) shows how the base changes the result. On either base it gives +2 To All Skills, +25-35% Faster Cast Rate, +55% Faster Hit Recovery, +22 Vitality and +89-112 Mana. On a sword it adds lightning and cold damage, and on a shield it adds 35% cold, lightning and poison resist. A Spirit sword has no poison damage even though Tal alone would add it, which is the replacement rule in action. A Monarch, which needs 156 Strength and holds up to 4 sockets, is the common shield.
Enigma (Jah, Ith, Ber; 3 sockets; body armor; level 65) gives +2 To All Skills, +45% Faster Run/Walk, +1 To Teleport and +750-775 Defense. Its Teleport works for any class, so a Paladin can use it. Jah and Ber are runes 31 and 30 of 33, which is why Enigma is a chase item.
Insight (Ral, Tir, Tal, Sol; 4 sockets; polearm, staff or bow/crossbow; level 27) gives a Level 12-17 Meditation Aura, which speeds up mana recovery for the wearer and their party, plus +35% Faster Cast Rate and +200-260% Enhanced Damage.
Grief (Eth, Tir, Lo, Mal, Ral; 5 sockets; sword or axe; level 59) gives Damage +340-400 and a 35% chance to cast Level 15 Venom on striking. Flat damage is added after the weapon's own Enhanced Damage, which is why that +340-400 matters so much.
What Is Lord of Hatred-Style Crafting?
Diablo IV: Lord of Hatred, released April 28, 2026, added Horadric Cube crafting, and Blizzard says Diablo V's crafting is inspired by that approach, with Diablo II-style Runes and Runewords included. The Horadric Cube is itself a Diablo II item, and in Diablo II: Resurrected it is how runes are upgraded: low runes combine in threes into the next rune up, and the higher tiers add a gem to the recipe (all Cube recipes). Blizzard has not said whether Diablo V has a Cube.
What Could This Mean for Diablo 5?
These points are guesses, not announcements.
- Stat requirements could make stat points a real decision again, but Blizzard is still testing the idea.
- Bigger items could turn inventory space into a resource to manage, as charms do in Diablo II.
How Can You Try Diablo-Style Itemization Today?
Diablo II: Resurrected has all of this now, and its ladder Season 16 starts Friday, November 13, 2026, at 5 PM PST (8 PM EST), a natural time to build a first runeword. Insight and Spirit use low runes and low required levels (27 and 25 in this site's data), so both are realistic early goals. Browse every recipe in the runeword database, look up bases and sets in the item database, and start with What Are Runewords in Diablo 2 Resurrected? if the idea is new. Players who want teammates can read how to find a D2R Season 16 team and browse the teams page, and the Season 16 start date guide has every region's time. FAQ
Will Diablo 5 have runewords?
Blizzard says crafting includes Diablo II-style Runes and Runewords. It has not detailed how they work in Diablo V, so whether recipes like Spirit or Enigma carry over is unconfirmed.
Will Diablo 5 have stat requirements on gear?
Blizzard says it is experimenting with them, and the decision is not final.
How do sets work in Diablo 5?
Blizzard says gear-based sets return, and no set has been named. In Diablo II, each extra piece worn switches on a bigger bonus, as in the Tal Rasha's Wrappings table above.
How big is the Diablo 5 inventory?
Blizzard says larger items take up more inventory space again and has described only that direction. In Diablo II: Resurrected the backpack is a 10 by 4 grid.
Can players try Diablo 5 itemization now?
Not in Diablo V: no beta has been announced, and the game is due in Spring 2029.
