Blade Fury Assassin Build Guide - D2 Resurrected
Blade Fury turns your equipped claws into a spinning ranged weapon that scales off your weapon damage rather than skill synergies, making it one of the cheapest ways to hit Hell-relevant numbers on almost no budget.
Build overview
Blade Fury is the Assassin''s odd duck: instead of scaling off elemental synergies like Fire Blast or the Martial Arts charge chain, it fires a burst of your equipped claw at a target and every enemy in its path, dealing weapon physical damage plus a flat elemental kicker from Blade Fury''s own level. Because the skill converts your weapon''s physical damage directly, a good ethereal claw with high average damage turns this into a legitimate Hell farmer for a fraction of what a Mosaic Sin costs.
Pros:
- Ranged, safe-at-range playstyle — no melee risk on packs
- Scales almost entirely off weapon damage, so upgrades are cheap and linear
- Pierces through the whole enemy line, clearing corridors and Cow packs well
- Works with Charms of Skill and any claw, no set pieces required
Cons:
- Damage output plateaus hard without crushing blow or deadly strike to finish tough uniques
- Cannot be paired with a shield, so defense leans entirely on Fade, Dragon Flight/Talon utility, and resistances
- Weak against bosses that require sustained single-target burst (Duriel, Diablo take a while)
- Mediocre AoE compared to Lightning Sentry or Mosaic — this is a budget-first pick, not a top-end farmer
Stat allocation
- Strength: enough for your claws and armor — typically 90-125 depending on your endgame armor choice.
- Dexterity: enough to reach max block if you ever swap in a katar/shield hybrid weapon, otherwise put the minimum needed for attack rating and equip requirements, since Blade Fury attack rating scales off your own AR at cast time.
- Vitality: everything else. This is a squishy caster-adjacent build with no shield, so vitality is king.
- Energy: none. A Fool''s claw or a couple mana-per-kill charms handle upkeep.
Skill order 1-99
Leveling priority (see the Assassin class overview for base skill mechanics):
- Blade Fury (1) as soon as it unlocks at 24 — until then use Fire Blast to level.
- Fire Blast (1) for early leveling and trap-adjacent safety.
- Blade Sentinel — max second; it stacks as a passive multi-hit alongside Blade Fury for essentially free extra damage.
- Weapon Block — max for survivability; grants a chance to block melee hits even without a shield equipped, as long as a claw is in the weapon slot.
- Fade — max for resistances and curse/physical damage reduction; one of the best defensive tools in the Assassin kit.
- Burst of Speed — one point minimum, more if you want the faster run/walk and attack speed while it''s active (it does not stack with Blade Fury cast time, but the movement speed matters for kiting).
- Remaining points into Shadow Warrior or Mind Blast for utility/crowd control, plus prerequisite one-pointers (Claw Mastery, Psychic Hammer, Cloak of Shadows) as needed.
Breakpoints
Blade Fury has its own cast rate that does not follow the normal FCR chart — increased attack speed (IAS) is what matters here, since Blade Fury throws are governed by weapon attack speed, not a spellcasting frame table.
| IAS breakpoint target | Frames per Blade Fury throw | Notes |
|---|
| 0% IAS | 16 frames | Base claw speed, most claws |
| 20% IAS | 13 frames | Easy to reach with two IAS jewels |
| 37% IAS | 12 frames | Common sweet spot with claw + gloves |
| 68% IAS | 11 frames | Requires stacking Rare/Crafted IAS pieces |
| 99%+ IAS | 10 frames | High-investment target, rarely necessary |
Faster Hit Recovery (FHR) still matters for survivability since Blade Fury offers no lifesteal safety net at range:
| FHR breakpoint | % needed | Frames recovered |
|---|
| 1 | 6% | 8 → 7 |
| 2 | 20% | 7 → 6 |
| 3 | 32% | 6 → 5 |
| 4 | 52% | 5 → 4 |
| 5 | 86% | 4 → 3 |
Prioritize the 37% or 68% IAS breakpoint before chasing FHR beyond the 20-32% range — Blade Fury''s ranged nature means you take fewer hits than a melee build.
Gear by budget phase
Starter (leveling to ~40):
- Weapon: any pair of normal claws with high average damage, or a single ethereal claw with a shield-slot claw for Weapon Block
- Armor: whatever resist rares you find; Stealth runeword once you have Tal and Eth
- Charms: small charms of vitality/life
Mid (Nightmare into early Hell):
- Weapon: an ethereal Feral Claws or Fascia base with high ED%, ideally socketed with an IAS jewel or Shael
- Armor: Smoke or Duriel''s Shell for resist coverage
- Belt: String of Ears for the life leech and damage reduction
- Boots: Gore Riders for crushing blow if you can afford them, otherwise any resist boots
- Gloves: Gloves of Nagelring-tier IAS or Bloodfist for early attack speed
- Amulet/rings: cheap resist rares, a +skills amulet if available
Endgame:
- Weapon: dual ethereal claws with 15% IAS jewels, or a Runic Talons/Fascia base with a high-ED%, high-ED prefix roll
- Armor: Chains of Honor or Fortitude for the damage and resist package
- Belt: String of Ears or Verdungo''s Hearty Cord for the extra vitality and damage reduction
- Boots: Gore Riders (crushing blow) or War Traveler
- Gloves: Steelrend or a crafted IAS/Deadly Strike pair
- Rings: two Raven Frost for max block-less survivability (cold absorb, dex, AR) or a Raven Frost + Dwarf Star
- Charms: Grand Charms of physical damage or Blade Fury skill points, Annihilus, Torch
- Inventory filler: small charms of life and resistance
Check cheap high-impact runewords for budget-friendly weapon and armor swaps if Chains of Honor is out of reach.
Mercenary setup
Run an Act 2 Combat mercenary with Defiance aura on Nightmare difficulty (best aura-to-cost ratio) equipped with an Insight polearm for free mana, Treachery for extra defense and the Fade proc backup, and a Guillaume''s Face or Andariel''s Visage for damage output. This merc tanks while Blade Fury pierces through the pack from range.
Best farming targets and why
- Countess — fast, no immunes to worry about, and rune drops fund your claw upgrades directly. See the Countess rune farming guide for the run pattern.
- Cow Level — Blade Fury''s piercing line shreds cow packs lined up in the maze corridors; this is arguably the build''s best farm.
- Pit and Pits of Acheron — tight corridors suit the piercing beam, and item density is solid for the time investment.
- Travincal — the council members line up conveniently for a single Blade Fury throw to hit all three.
Leveling route and respec timing
Level through Normal using Fire Blast and Blade Sentinel as your early attackers — Blade Fury does not unlock until character level 24, so don''t force it before then. Once it''s available, transition your attack key over and start putting real points into it while still finishing prerequisite one-pointers. There is no need for a hard respec point like some builds require; Blade Fury''s skill tree naturally builds toward the endgame allocation as you level, so a light respec at 60+ just to clean up wasted early points is usually sufficient.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
- Chasing FCR instead of IAS. Blade Fury ignores the sorceress-style FCR chart entirely — check your weapon speed and IAS breakpoints instead, or you will be throwing at a crawl.
- Skipping Weapon Block. Without a shield, this skill is your only passive mitigation against melee attackers; underinvesting here gets you killed in packed rooms.
- Using two different claw types. Mismatched claw speeds mean Blade Fury uses whichever is slower for its animation — match your pair''s base speed for consistent throws.
- Ignoring crushing blow. Blade Fury''s DPS against high-life uniques and act bosses is mediocre without it; Gore Riders or a crushing blow charm noticeably speeds up boss kills.
- Underestimating positioning. Blade Fury fires in a straight line — learn to angle yourself so the beam actually threads through packs rather than clipping one or two enemies.
