Fishyzon (Freezing Arrow) Build Guide - D2 Resurrected
Freezing Arrow does the mana-hungry heavy lifting normally reserved for casters, but it lives in a bow, which means an Insight merc solves your mana problem for free from level one. Full skills, stats, breakpoints, gear and farming routes for the Fishyzon starter.
Build overview
The Fishyzon is the Amazon''s answer to the Fishymancer: a build named for how effortlessly it survives on nothing, because the mercenary is doing the expensive part. Freezing Arrow is a Cold Skill that fires a piercing bolt which explodes into a small freezing nova on impact, chilling and damaging everything nearby. It costs real mana per shot, but you never carry that cost yourself — an Act 2 Holy Freeze mercenary wearing an Insight polearm hands you nearly unlimited mana regen through its aura, so you spam Freezing Arrow all day on a fraction of the gold a comparable caster needs.
Pros:
- Cheap to start — the whole kit besides Insight (which the merc wears, not you) is common uniques and rares
- Piercing arrows clear packs in corridors extremely well
- Cold damage plus the freeze nova chills everything, drastically cutting incoming damage
- Scales cleanly into Multishot/Strafe hybrids or a Faith bow later without a respec
Cons:
- Cold immunes stop you cold (Cold Mastery being your only mitigation, and even that caps out against broken immunes)
- Lower raw DPS ceiling than a maxed Bowazon or Javazon
- Attack rating needs constant attention via Valkyrie, Slow Missiles, and gear — Amazons are AR-hungry at low level
Freezing Arrow slots neatly as a starter and a leveling character because it does not need Faith, Windforce, or Grief to function — just a normal or magic bow, an Insight merc, and patience. For the endgame Javazon comparison, see the Javazon (Lightning Fury) Build Guide once you outgrow bows.
Stat allocation
- Strength: enough for your bow and armor, typically 80-100 through most of the game, more if you chase a heavier endgame bow
- Dexterity: the priority stat. Push it as high as needed for attack rating and max damage bonus; Amazons get meaningful AR per point
- Vitality: everything left over after Strength and Dexterity requirements
- Energy: none — the Insight merc covers your mana entirely
Skill order 1-99
Rough leveling order, respeccing lightly once at the Freezing Arrow tree unlock:
- Magic Arrow (1 point, level 1) — free damage before Cold Arrow unlocks
- Cold Arrow to 20 by mid-Normal — your main leveling attack, chills as you go
- Slow Missiles — 1 point as soon as available; the AR debuff and slow are huge quality-of-life for a squishy ranged class
- Valkyrie — 1 point early, more later; she tanks for you and is irreplaceable
- Freezing Arrow — start dumping points once unlocked (clvl 24), then max it
- Cold Mastery — one point early for the -% resist, then finish maxing after Freezing Arrow
- Penetrate — a handful of points for the AR bonus once core skills are maxed
- Fill remaining points into Multishot (great pierce clear with Freezing Arrow procs) or Guided Arrow if you want single-target reach
Priority order once respec'd: Freezing Arrow → Cold Mastery → Valkyrie → Slow Missiles → Penetrate → Multishot.
IAS breakpoints (Matriarchal/Amazon Bow, normal speed base)
| IAS needed | Frames per attack |
|---|
| 0% | 13 |
| 9% | 12 |
| 23% | 11 |
| 37% | 10 |
| 52% | 9 |
| 68% | 8 |
| 86% | 7 |
| 109% | 6 |
Most Fishyzons stop around the 9- or 8-frame breakpoint (52% or 68% IAS) since Freezing Arrow's own cooldown and the piercing hitbox matter more than raw attack speed once you're comfortable.
FHR breakpoints (Amazon, 9-frame base)
| FHR needed | Frames |
|---|
| 0% | 9 |
| 13% | 8 |
| 20% | 7 |
| 32% | 6 |
| 52% | 5 |
| 86% | 4 |
| 174% | 3 |
Aim for the 6-frame breakpoint (32%) minimum before Hell; it is cheap to hit with gloves and boots alone.
Gear by budget phase
Starter (Normal into Nightmare):
- Bow: any fast magic/rare bow with +skills or a Razortail-quiver combo; a 3-socket bow with Shael runes covers IAS
- Armor: Twitchthroe or a cheap rare
- Helm: Rockstopper or a rare with resists
- Belt: String of Ears or Razortail (Razortail's AR and CB fill a real gap early)
- Amulet/rings: whatever caps resistances; a +2 bow amulet if affordable
Mid game (Nightmare into Hell):
- Bow: Witchwild String or a socketed rare bow with 15% IAS runes
- Armor: Stealth or Duriel's Shell
- Belt: Razortail into Verdungo once survivability matters more than offense
- Boots: Gore Rider for crushing blow and IAS, or War Traveler for utility
- Gloves: Gore Rider-style crushing blow gloves, or Chance Guards for extra MF
Endgame:
- Bow: Faith Matriarchal Bow (the big jump — 15 all resist aura, +damage, ethereal) or Buriza if you pivot to Freezing Arrow's frozen-orb-like clear pattern with the unique crossbow
- Armor: Chains of Honor or Fortitude
- Helm: Andariel's Visage (careful with poison resist) or a rare with +skills and resists
- Belt: Verdungo''s Hearty Cord
- Boots: Gore Rider; Gloves: Laying of Hands or Gore Rider
- Rings/amulet: dual SoJ or resist rares plus a +3 bow skills amulet
Freezing Arrow specifically loves +skills and cold damage over raw IAS, since the freeze radius and piercing already do the clearing work.
Mercenary setup
Act 2 Holy Freeze mercenary, Nightmare (for the resist aura) or Hell difficulty hire, geared with:
- Weapon: Insight polearm (ethereal Thresher or Cryptic Axe) — this is the entire point of the build, giving you and the merc mana-per-second regen without spending a single stat point on Energy
- Armor: Treachery for the free +45% IAS and CtC Fade, or Duriel''s Shell for raw defense early
- Helm: Andariel''s Visage or a Tal Rasha''s Horadric Crest for resists and mana
Best farming targets
- Pits, Ancient Tunnels, and Countess — no cold immunes, tight corridors that let Freezing Arrow''s pierce shine
- Mausoleum/Crypt (Andariel run) — fast experience and a full drop table
- Travincal — Council members die fast to piercing arrows with the freeze chaining between them
- Terror zones without cold immunity — rotate freely; Freezing Arrow trivializes most non-immune zones
For deeper detail on farming rotations, see the Cow Level Farming Guide — Freezing Arrow is one of the best cow-clearing skills in the game thanks to the piercing nova chaining through tight herds.
Leveling route and respec timing
Level as a Cold Arrow / Multishot hybrid through Normal, picking up Slow Missiles and Valkyrie by the early twenties for survivability. Freezing Arrow unlocks at character level 24 — start feeding it points immediately, but don''t fully commit stat points to a hard respec until you''re comfortable in Nightmare, since Cold Arrow carries you fine until then. A single free respec from Akara (Nightmare) or Hell difficulty covers cleaning up any wasted early points.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
- Skipping Slow Missiles — it is one point for a massive incoming-damage reduction; there is no excuse to skip it
- Forgetting the Insight merc — running any other mercenary weapon defeats the entire premise of the build; without Insight you will run dry constantly
- Underinvesting in Valkyrie — she needs a few extra points beyond the minimum to survive Hell; a 1-point Valkyrie dies instantly to act bosses
- Chasing IAS breakpoints over +skills — Freezing Arrow''s damage scales hard with skill levels; prioritize +skills gear before squeezing extra attack speed
- Fighting cold immunes head-on — retreat, let the merc tank, or swap to a physical backup plan (Multishot with a strong bow) rather than wasting time and potions
Why the Insight loop works so well
Most starter builds have to choose between offense and sustainability early on — either you carry mana potions everywhere or you sink stat points into Energy that would otherwise go to survival or damage. The Fishyzon sidesteps the entire tradeoff because the mercenary, not the player, wears the mana-solving item. Insight''s Meditation aura radius is generous enough that as long as you keep your merc within a screen or two of you, Freezing Arrow spam simply never runs dry. This is the same trick that makes the Fishymancer Necromancer so beloved as a starter, and it is why both builds share the "fishy" naming convention among the community — a fishy build is one that survives almost entirely off borrowed mercenary support rather than its own itemization.
That has a practical consequence for how you gear yourself: every slot on your own character can go toward attack rating, resistances, and damage instead of mana leech or Energy points. It is also why the build transitions so cleanly into a full Bowazon or Javazon later — none of your personal gear choices were locked into mana sustain, so a later swap to Multishot, Strafe, or Lightning Fury doesn''t require unwinding bad habits.
Playing around Valkyrie and Slow Missiles
The two most underrated points in this build are the ones players are tempted to skip while rushing Freezing Arrow. Valkyrie is a persistent minion who tanks melee attackers, draws aggro away from your squishy Amazon, and scales with the points you put into her — a 1-point Valkyrie in Hell will die to the first Fanaticism-boosted pack she meets, while a 12-17 point Valkyrie with a decent weapon socketed into her can hold a doorway indefinitely. Treat her gear as seriously as your own weapon slot; a spare Insight, Crescent Moon, or even a plain Bonesnap does wonders for her survivability and damage output.
Slow Missiles is the other underrated pick. Its -25% enemy speed and -33% missile velocity reduction (with further scaling per point) turns ranged Hell packs — Enslaved shamans, Undead Fetish, and vile archers — from a serious threat into a manageable one, since Freezing Arrow''s own freeze-on-hit already handles melee threats. A one- or two-point investment pays for itself the first time a pack of Frenzytaurs stops closing the distance fast enough to reach you.
Transitioning out of the Fishyzon shell
Because Freezing Arrow scales entirely off gear you would want on any Amazon anyway — a fast bow, Dexterity, resistances, and +skills — most players use this as their Hell-entry character and then decide whether to keep pushing Freezing Arrow toward endgame viability or pivot the same character into a Bowazon or Lightning Fury Javazon once better gear starts dropping. If you go the Bowazon route, look at the Windforce Bowazon Build Guide for the physical damage endgame; if you''d rather go elemental and social (cow runs, terror zones, boss farming), the Javazon comparison above covers that path. Either way, nothing about your Fishyzon investment is wasted — Dexterity, Valkyrie, and Slow Missiles carry over regardless of which skill tree eventually takes the main damage role.
