Budget Bowazon Build Guide - D2 Resurrected
The Budget Bowazon proves that Multishot and Guided Arrow do not need Windforce to clear Hell. A Witchwild String and a rare bow with the right sockets get you through every act well before you can afford the endgame bows.
Build overview: pros and cons
The Budget Bowazon is what most Amazon players actually play through their first ladder season — Multishot and Guided Arrow scale hard off flat bow damage, +skills, and attack rating, all of which are cheap to stack even without a unique bow. You lose the enormous crowd-clear ceiling of a Windforce or Faith Matriarchal Bow, but you keep everything that makes Bowazon fun: safe ranged damage, no cast delay to manage, and a mercenary that tanks while you kite and shoot.
Pros:
- Fully functional from act 1 Hell on rare/crafted bows and cheap runewords
- Guided Arrow homes on targets, so aim is never an issue
- Extremely gear-forgiving — a socketed Witchwild String or a 3-socket bow with Shael/Shael/Shael already feels good
- Scales cleanly into Windforce or Faith later without a skill respec
Cons:
- Physical damage means act bosses with high physical resist (and lightning-immune packs if you lean Multishot-Charged Strike) slow you down
- Lower attack speed than an endgame Bowazon until you find IAS gear
- No built-in crowd control like Freezing Arrow's slow, so mercenary quality matters more
For context on the class fundamentals and the top-end version of this build, see the Amazon class overview and the Windforce Bowazon guide once your budget grows.
Stat allocation
- Strength: enough to wear your bow and armor — typically 85-120 depending on bow choice (Witchwild String needs only 50 Str, most rare Matriarchal Bows sit closer to 85-100).
- Dexterity: heavy investment. Dexterity adds both damage and attack rating for bows, so pour points here after Strength requirements are met — most budget Bowazons run 200+ Dexterity by level 80.
- Vitality: everything left over. Aim for enough life to survive a Hell physical hit; 700-900 life unbuffed is a safe range with decent resist gear.
- Energy: none. A small mana pool covers Valkyrie and Decoy casts; potions handle the rest.
Skill order 1-99 and breakpoints
Priority order:
- Magic Arrow (1 point, prerequisite) → Cold Arrow (1 point, prerequisite for Freezing Arrow tree access if you want it later, otherwise skip)
- Multiple Shot — your primary screen-clear skill; max first after prerequisites
- Guided Arrow — your primary boss/single-target skill; max second
- Penetrate — max third, this is your attack rating and crit synergy for both skills
- Critical Strike — one hard point minimum, more if points remain
- Valkyrie — one point minimum, more if you can spare them; a 6-17 point Valkyrie tanks reliably in Hell
- Decoy — one point for aggro management
- Dodge/Avoid/Evade — one point each as you level; passive survivability
Budget Bowazons run entirely on Increased Attack Speed (IAS) gear rather than Faster Cast Rate. Bow attack speed breakpoints depend on your bow's base Weapon Speed (WSM), so check your specific bow, but the two most common budget targets are:
| Bow base | IAS needed for next breakpoint | Frames per attack |
|---|
| Normal speed bow (WSM 0), no IAS | — | 13 |
| Normal speed bow, +20% IAS | 20% | 12 |
| Normal speed bow, +40% IAS | 40% | 11 |
| Witchwild String (fast, WSM -10) | 0% | 10 |
| Witchwild String, +20% IAS | 20% | 9 |
A Witchwild String alone already sits at a strong breakpoint, which is a big part of why it is the go-to budget bow. If you're using a rare Matriarchal Bow, stack Angelic gloves/rings or Razortail for cheap IAS + AR + resist until you hit 20-40%.
Gear by budget phase
Starter (act 1-3 Normal):
- Any fast bow you find — Edge, Skystrike, or just a rare short bow
- Whatever armor/helm covers your resistances
- Stealth runeword in your armor as soon as you have a Tal + Eth
Mid (Nightmare into early Hell):
- Weapon: Witchwild String (Feral + Cham... actually just find the unique — cheap and iconic) or a 3-socket Matriarchal Bow with Shael runes for pure IAS, or Zephyr for a leveling boost
- Armor: Stealth or Duriel's Shell for physical resist and huge life
- Helm: Rockstopper or a rare with life/resist; Coif of Torment if you can afford it
- Belt: String of Ears (life leech + damage reduction) or Goldwrap for gold find while leveling
- Gloves: Razortail (AR + gold find) or Gravepalm; Boots: any rare with FRW + resist
- Rings/Amulet: Manald Heal or Nagelring for early cheap sustain, upgrading to rare resist rings as found
Endgame (comfortable Hell farming, still budget):
- Weapon: Witchwild String fully socketed, or a rare Matriarchal Bow with 3-4 sockets of Shael/Ist for IAS and damage
- Armor: Duriel's Shell or a Lionheart runeword (Hel-Lum-Fal) for all-around stats
- Helm: Coif of Torment or a rare with +life, resist, and AR
- Belt: String of Ears; Gloves: Razortail; Boots: Sander's Riprap or a rare
- Rings: two rare AR/resist rings or a Raven Frost for CBF and Dex
- Amulet: Rare +skills/AR/resist amulet
- Charms: flat damage and AR small charms fill the rest of inventory
This whole kit is affordable off Hell act 1-2 farming and sets you up to slot straight into a Windforce Bowazon later without touching your skill tree.
Mercenary setup
Run an Act 2 Nightmare or Hell mercenary with Might aura — since your damage is physical, a flat damage-percent aura from the merc multiplies everything you and he do. Equip him with:
- Weapon: any decent polearm, ideally an Insight if you have someone else farming mana for you, otherwise a cheap ethereal polearm with sockets
- Armor: Duriel's Shell or Smoke for resist
- Helm: Vampire Gaze if affordable, otherwise a rare with life leech
If your survivability is shakier, an Act 2 Holy Freeze mercenary works too and helps crowd control melee packs while you kite and shoot.
Best farming targets and why
- Andariel — fast kills, quick run, and her drop table hits rings, amulets, and charms you need for this exact build.
- Mausoleum/Pit in Act 1 — reliably decent item density with manageable physical-resist packs, good early Hell farming while your damage is still ramping.
- Countess — cheap, fast rune drops to fund your Lionheart or eventually a real runeword bow. See the Countess rune farming guide for the optimal route.
- Travincal — Council members drop well and die fast to Guided Arrow's homing single-target damage.
- Terror zones — rotate into any non-physical-immune zone for the best experience-to-loot ratio once you can survive Hell density.
Leveling route and respec timing
Level with Magic Arrow into Cold Arrow through Normal — Cold Arrow's slow keeps you safe while your damage is low. Around level 24 pick up Multiple Shot and start using it as your main clear skill once you have two points in it. Guided Arrow unlocks at 30 and becomes your boss-killer immediately — its homing means you never waste points chasing a moving target.
There is no need for a full respec later; unlike casters, the Bowazon's skill investment (Multishot, Guided Arrow, Penetrate) is identical from mid-Nightmare through end of Hell. The only "respec" moment is swapping a leveling bow for your Witchwild String or rare Matriarchal Bow once you can afford it — that's a gear change, not a skill change.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
- Ignoring Penetrate. New players dump everything into Multishot and Guided Arrow and skip Penetrate, then wonder why their attack rating is terrible in Hell. Penetrate is a hard requirement, not optional.
- Using a slow bow. Bow WSM matters enormously for a physical-damage build. Check your bow's base speed before committing runes to it — a "fast" or "very fast" base bow is worth more than a slightly higher-damage normal-speed one.
- Skipping Valkyrie. Even one point in Valkyrie gives you a meatshield that also deals decent damage; it costs almost nothing and saves potions.
- Underinvesting in Dexterity. Because Dexterity feeds both damage and AR for bows, Amazons that split Str/Dex evenly end up under both hit and damage caps. Dump Strength requirements only, then everything else into Dex until Vitality catches up late.
- Farming physical-immune areas. Act 5 Hell has some nasty physical-resistant packs; if clear speed craters, rotate to a friendlier zone rather than grinding through it — see budget-friendly runewords for options that add elemental damage to break through resist.
