Starter Javazon Build Guide - D2 Resurrected
No Spirit runeword, no early Enigma, no problem. The Starter Javazon clears Normal and Nightmare on found javelins and turns Hell-viable the moment Titan's Revenge drops.
Build overview
The Starter Javazon exists for one reason: ladder day one, or any fresh economy where you have nothing. It uses the exact same skill tree as the full endgame Javazon (Lightning Fury plus Charged Strike synergy) but plans the early game around plain javelins, vendor gear, and whatever gold and set items you pick up along the way, instead of assuming a Titan's Revenge or Insight merc from the outset.
Pros:
- Fully self-found viable — javelins are cheap, common, and drop constantly
- Charged Strike alone clears Normal and most of Nightmare with almost no gear
- Smooth transition into the full endgame Javazon build once Titan's Revenge drops — no second respec needed
- Ranged and safe, forgiving for players still learning monster behavior on a new ladder
Cons:
- Mana is a real problem before Insight; expect to chug blue potions through Nightmare
- Weak against lightning immunes with zero workaround gear early on
- Attack Rating is rough without a real weapon, so early Hell can feel inaccurate
- Needs a genuine gold or rune investment (Titan's Revenge, an Insight merc) to become the endgame build — this is a bridge, not a final form
See the Amazon class overview and Amazon breakpoints for the full skill reference, and Titan's Revenge guide for exactly when and how to upgrade out of this phase.
Stat allocation
- Strength: just enough for your current javelin and shield — don't overshoot for a Titan's Revenge you don't have yet. Add strength incrementally as you upgrade weapons.
- Dexterity: enough for comfortable block percentage with whatever shield you're using, plus enough Attack Rating to actually hit Nightmare/Hell monsters. Early on, lean slightly more dexterity than the endgame build would, since you lack +AR gear.
- Vitality: the rest, always. You have no Energy Shield and thin armor early — vitality keeps you alive while your gear catches up.
- Energy: none. It's tempting to dump points here to fix mana problems, but a handful of mana potions and eventual Insight solve it permanently; energy points are wasted the moment you get real gear.
Skill order 1-99
- Jab — 1 point, useful filler in the very first levels before Charged Strike unlocks
- Power Strike — 1 point, prerequisite and a decent early single-target option
- Charged Strike — start pumping this around level 12-18; it's your main leveling and Hell-entry skill, clearing packs without needing the full Lightning Fury chain
- Lightning Strike / Lightning Bolt — 1 point each as prerequisites when you reach them
- Lightning Fury — unlocks at level 30; once you have a real weapon (Titan's Revenge or a strong rare javelin) and mana sustain, start diverting points here
- Critical Strike — max this whenever you have spare points; it scales both Charged Strike and Lightning Fury
- Valkyrie / Decoy — 1 point each as soon as available; both are excellent free tanks for a squishy ranged character
- Dodge / Avoid / Evade — 1 point each for the passive survivability
A practical starter spread by level 40: 1 Jab, 1 Power Strike, 1 Lightning Bolt, 1 Lightning Strike, 15-18 Charged Strike, 1 Valkyrie, 1 Decoy, remainder into Critical Strike and Dodge/Avoid/Evade. Don't touch Lightning Fury seriously until your weapon can support it — a low-damage LF throw with no synergy investment is worse than a maxed Charged Strike.
Breakpoints
The same universal FHR table applies to every class:
| FHR needed | Frames |
|---|
| 0% | 20 |
| 3% | 19 |
| 7% | 18 |
| 10% | 17 |
| 13% | 16 |
| 20% | 14 |
| 32% | 12 |
| 52% | 10 |
| 86% | 8 |
Early game, don't chase these numbers directly — just take any FHR you find on rares. By the time you're farming Nightmare Baal, aim for the 20% breakpoint (14 frames) as a soft floor; it's cheap to hit with a single item or charm and meaningfully reduces stunlock chains.
For attack speed, plain javelins are Normal speed weapons; each 20/12 IAS breakpoint step matters less here than just having any IAS gloves or a fast unique javelin like Titan's Revenge once it's affordable.
Gear by budget phase
Starter (Normal/early Nightmare):
- Weapon: any magic or rare javelin with +damage or +AR, or a Lightning Bolt runeword javelin if you can spare a Tir and an Eth; Shield: any block/resist rare, or Umbral Disk
- Armor: whatever gives resistances — Twitchthroe if found, otherwise a plain rare
- Charms and inventory: pick up any small charms with life, resist, or +skills — they matter more than a specific weapon at this stage
Mid (late Nightmare into Hell):
- Weapon: save gold for Titan's Revenge the moment you can afford it — it single-handedly fixes damage, crushing blow, and open wounds all at once
- Shield: upgrade toward Stormshield or a high-block rare as soon as the strength requirement is reachable
- Boots: War Traveler for the FHR and strength; Belt: any resist rare or Verdungo's if it drops
- Rings: a Raven Frost as early as possible — cannot-be-frozen alone is a huge quality-of-life and survivability upgrade for a ranged class
Endgame (transition point):
Once you have Titan's Revenge, a Stormshield or comparable block shield, and an Insight mercenary running, you have fully graduated into the full Javazon build — follow that guide's endgame gear list from here.
Mercenary setup
Early on, any Act 2 mercenary with a decent polearm works — prioritize a Fanaticism or Might aura merc since you don't have Insight yet and need the flat damage or attack speed boost more than mana efficiency. The moment you can afford Insight's runes (Ral Tir Tal Sol Ith — all common, low-level runes), put it on the merc immediately. It removes your mana problem outright and lets you commit points to Lightning Fury instead of holding back for potion runs.
Best farming targets
- Countess — cheap, fast, and a reliable low-rune source for your first Insight and any early runewords
- Andariel — quick with Charged Strike, decent early unique/set drops, and a short run
- Travincal — Council packs go down fast to Charged Strike even with mediocre gear, and it's a great gold farm for your Titan's Revenge fund
- Pit and Tal Rasha's Tomb — solid level 85 areas once you're comfortable in Hell, dense non-immune packs
Leveling route and respec timing
Charged Strike carries the entire leveling arc — you don't need a respec at all to transition into the endgame build, since Charged Strike stays as a maxed synergy either way. The only real "transition" is a gear one: once Titan's Revenge and an Insight merc are online, start actively diverting new points and any planned point resets into Lightning Fury instead of further Charged Strike investment, since you'll already have Charged Strike near or at 20 by then. If you badly misallocated points early (for example, dumping too much into Energy), a single Den of Evil or Council respec token can clean that up — you get one from quest completion in Normal.
Common mistakes
- Rushing Lightning Fury too early. Without synergy points and a real weapon, LF's damage-per-throw is worse than a maxed Charged Strike; wait until level 30+ and until you can actually support it.
- Ignoring mana entirely. A few blue potions and a couple of small mana charms go a long way before Insight — don't just facetank empty mana bars through packs.
- Underestimating Raven Frost. Cannot-be-frozen is easy to overlook on a starter budget, but getting frozen mid-pack in Hell is a common cause of avoidable deaths for a ranged class with no other CC immunity.
- Skipping Valkyrie and Decoy. Both are essentially free — 1 point each — and both absorb aggro that would otherwise land on you. There's no reason to leave them at zero.
- Overspending on the shield too early. A Stormshield is expensive; a cheap high-block rare gets you 90% of the mileage until you can actually afford the real one.
This build's entire job is to get you from nothing to a working Hell farmer without needing runewords or trade gold up front, then hand you off cleanly into the full Lightning Fury Javazon the moment your gear catches up.
